Title: MAWHINNEY/GALLOWAY
Post by: Taggart 009 on Friday 09 July 04 01:18 BST (UK)

Hi everyone, my first time on this mighty site.
I have not been doing genealogy too long. About 4 years. But I am stumped at trying to find out info on my grandfather (whome I have never even seen a picture of let alone met him) James Alexander Mawhinney.
I have found out that he was born in Ballybrolley, Lisnadill Parish, Keady. Co. Armagh.  Baptised in Tassagh Pres. church. His father was Alexander Mawhinney, his mother Isabella Galloway.
His brother was Robert Mawhinney b 8/9/1844  m 15th Nov 1871 Albert St. Pres. Elizabeth Ann Anderson. They had four children. Alexander b 13th Sept 1872. Ballybrolley.
Charlotte b 18th Sept 1874 Ballybrolley
Sarah b 17th Dec 1876 Lislea and robert b 19th Feb 1879
Lislea.
This seems to be the only information I can find out.  I would dearly love to know if any of you have come across any of these names (dead or alive, sorry no reward ) However I will gladly share anything I have on other items I have .
Val.

Oh, just noticed your signature shows Mawhinney in County Antrim too.

Bit of a longshot, but I recently came across details of one of my grandad's sisters who married in New York in 1907. Her name was Selena Lilley, from Larne. Her husband was Alexander Blair, from County Antrim. His parents were shown as John Blair and Martha Mowhinny. I have been wondering if this was a spelling error. Have you ever come across this version of the name or, indeed, have you ever come across anything on Martha?

How'd you do that so fast Otto. YOur amazing. I am a relative (pardon the play on words) idiot to all this genealogy. Live in a place out here in Canada where going to research places is out of the question so am relying on this site for all the help I can get. Plus I am an auld doll as they say in Ireland. :)
I don't suppose you would have any information on the Isabella Galloway below by any chance.  I have hit a terrible brick wall on her as well. Alexander and Isabella were my great grandparents of lwhich I know nothing and cant find out anything about where either of them originally came from.
Thank you so much for your other help. I am flabbergasted at how quickly you got that info and it is matching up correctly Thank you, thank you thank you.!
I have also been looking for someone to help me on this and I would be willing to pay as long as the charge wouldnt break my pensioners bank account. Any suggestions would be gratefully accepted. Val.

Yes, that Isabella it proving to be unfindable unfortunately.  Thanks so much for trying though. It was kind of you.
Maybe if you ever come across anything farther back on Isabella' or her husband, Alexander, you would keep me in mind
Thanks so much again. Val.

was recently contacted by another Galloway researcher who writes
"Dear Valerie,
I have just found your message on the Armagh website and wondered if your Galloway ancestors are related to mine, who lived in Ballybrolly,Keady, and married in Tassagh Church. There can't be that many Galloways in Keady can there? I feel sure there must be a link. Hope you can find one.

Kind regards,

Hi Val,

I have found two Galloways living in Co. Armagh in 1864 when Griffiths Valation of the county was taking place. Not much more information on them at the moment other than that they were the head of the household in each case.
William Galloway lived in the townland of Ballynery, in the parish of Martiaghs and George Galloway lived at Ballygasey in the Parish of Loughgall.

Best Wishes, Chris

Hei Val,

Here is a site which says Elizabeth Ann Galloway married on 10th December 1849 as opposed to the 9th December.- http://www.mcadamshistory.com/NIRecords.html

There are eight Galloways in the Lagan Valley and Quoile Phone Book 2004/5. The Phone Book for Northern Ireland 2003 had a list of approximately 72 Galloways.

Here is an interesting site for you Val. May not be connected to your family but the name Galloway may be worth a look in this case as the guy that married Eliza, daughter of John Galloway of Monkstown, Co. Dublin was William Drennan Andrews, one of the Andrews family of Comber, Co. Down. Another member of this well known family was Thomas Andrews Junr, Chief Designer and Managing Director of Harland and Wolff. He designed the Titanic which sank when it struck an iceberg in 1912.  www.proni.gov.uk/records/private/andrewfm.htm Broken Link

All the Best, Chris

Chris this was a great find, thank you! I have past it on to the lady who contacted me regarding the Galloway/McAdam marriage in the first place. She will be delighted as it is actually her McAdam family that is mentioned!
Yet another good deed done Chris.

I would bet my bottom dollar this is a spelling error on Mawhinney. NEVER gave seen it spelt that way.  Thanks for reply and yes I knew there were lots of Mawhinny connections in Antrim, alas they don't seem to be mine as I once did think. My lot definitely came from Keady. Co. Armagh. At the moment I am now trying to find the children of the following

From the Registers of Armagh - Parish of Tynan.
January 13th 1686 William Galloway married Mary English.

I am hoping one of their children was an Isabella Galloway who later married Alexander Mawhinney in Keady. Co.
Armagh.

Thanks so much for the list of Mawhinney addresses by the way. That was very kind of you and much appreciated.

I have no idea when you posted this, or if you care, but I found this http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=368666.0;attach=12503
Very interesting. It goes all the way from Robert Galloway to Patricia Hunter Love and her husband Bernard Stubbert (who happen to be my great-grandparents)
I just thought it was pretty neat and maybe you'd think so too, I guess.
:)

My family has been trying to fill out our family tree a bit. We already had a few generations before Thomas Hunter Love, but it's been neat going even further back.
