Title: Parish records Ireton (Irton?) Cumberland
Post by: meg2 on Wednesday 16 February 05 15:55 GMT (UK)
Hi,
I know this is a long shot but, has anyone access to parish records for Ireton Cumberland?
I can't find anything online (if anyone knows if records are available online that would help too!).

I'm trying to find the records of William Turner born  about 1751 in Burnthouse Ireton , His lady wife Mary (no maiden name) born 1755
and their children:
Robert  1777
Mary Elizabeth 1779
Samuel  1783
Jane 1788
As far as I know they were all born in Burnthouse Ireton.
It is possible someone might find Samuel and Robert on the 1841 census, that would help too.

I'm also looking for John Bryden (Brydon) who was born in Ireton in 1800.
Jim kindly found John Bryden on the 1851 census for me, but if anyone can find a parish record of him marrying Mary Turner in Ireton around  1823  it would be great!

Also, I have this Turner mystery, The name goes down the generations, not just through one 'link' (child) but I've found cousins with the 'Turner' name. Makes me wonder who he was? Not anything to do with THE William Turner I know, but I do wonder if he was 'someone' (as opposed to a nobody like me!)
Thanks very much
Meg

Meg

are you still looking for this info?

You can search some of the Irton parish records on line via the IGI using the following link http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/igi/search_IGI.asp or by parish at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hughwallis/

I found Robert & Mary listed under C059641 so the dates seem a little mixed up & I would treat with scepticism any records submitted by LDS members as you don't know how accurate their research has been.  Extracted records are usually reliable (in this case Bishop's Transcripts for Irton) although subject to the usual transcription errors.

The IGI does list a William Turner marrying a Mary Ashburn in Jan 1775 at Crosscannonby (further up the coast just north of Maryport) - maybe he married his bride in her home town and then moved?  Although Turner is a reasonably common name around these parts.

if you have already seen the IGI you could try writing to Whitehaven Record Office http://www.cumbria.gov.uk/archives/recordoffices/whrec.asp to see if they hold the records and could copy extracts for you - they will usually do this for a copying fee (as opposed to the research fee) if you quote the IGI.  The extract may give Mary's full name.

Thanks Sue,
I found some of the IGI records but they did not seem to be much help.   I think my best bet is the Cumbria Archives.

Thanks Meg
