Hi
Is anyone able to look up Christopher Bendelow born abt 1796 in Bedale? Struggling to find his parents. I dont live near the RO in Yorkshire and the IGI dont include these years, so any help much appreciated.

I also have an interest in Christopher Bendelow.
I am currently undertaking a one name study on the name Bendelow and its varients.
Up to now I have been unable to find his baptism using the IGI indexes that cover Bedale.
I have looked at other Christophers baptised in Bedale around the same time but I have not found any that could fit.
I have also tried many surname variations but I am still yet to find anything.
If you manage to find a baptism for him I would be very grateful, as he currently heads my only Yorkshire Bendelow tree that does not attach to my main one.

Hi Nat and Jan88,
Welcome to RootsChat Jan !! :)
I'm sorry I can't help at the moment with Christopher's baptism, I had the same problem with this parish and had to go to the county archives.
The thing that is puzzling me, assuming I've found the right Christopher, married to Hannah .. according to the census returns of 1851 and 1861, Christopher's birthplaces are listed as Well and Scruton. Although Christopher isn't listed, the IGI for the parish of Well contains quite a few Bendelows born around this time ??
Just in case anyone is able to do this lookup for you .. it might be worth their while to also check Well or Scruton, if they aren't able to find anything elsewhere ??
Kind regards,
Pels.

The only Christopher I have found b abt this time was bt 15 Nov 1795 at Scruton illeg son of Mary BENDILOW & C'topher Lambert. Mary m 17 Sept 1798 Robt Barnet both of Scruton.
There was a family of Binlowes in Scruton from 1657 when Thomas Binlowes m Annie Reede. Thomas was Rector of Scruton between 1653-64 and originated in Aiskew

That sounds quite promising. I havent looked at the tree for quite a while but I do remember that the Bendelows are a bit of a mystery.
Player - do you have any more infortmation on the Bendelows and their varients.

Just a note to add to previous messages.
Some luck and perseverance needed to trace the Bendelow family origins! The rarity of the name helps of course, but there are endless branches of the Bendelow family in N Yorks in 18th century. Certainly there is at least one family at Scruton, several at Well, Thirsk and so on, some still at Burneston. At Pickhill where the family seems to have spread from they can be traced back in the parish register to the end of 16th century.
I found the 1841 census gives a good idea of the parishes covered at that time.
The name variations are very confusing - Bendlowes, Benlows, Binsley, Bindlos and countless variations of these. I have often seen the name spelled differently in the same document, and certainly the parish registers demonstrate how the spelling was in no way standardised at this time.
