Title: Grave look-up/information on graveyards Croydon JONES please :)
Post by: Ayashi on Friday 13 March 09 16:01 GMT (UK)
I've been trying to trace the 1953 grave of my g-grandfather Walter JONES 1890, died in Ross Road, Croydon. We guess he was probably buried there.

Firstly I wanted to ask what is the most likely cemetery he might have been buried in... secondly, I would be indebted to anyone living in Croydon who might actually help me find it... I'm not mobile or I'd be in Croydon searching :(

I owe so much to you all already :) Thank you.

Hi Ayashi

This is the contact information for Croydon cemeteries

http://www.croydon.gov.uk/community/deaths/cemeteries/cemetery

It is likely to be Mitcham Road cemetery.

Regards

Valda

Hi
Try this address BEREAVEMENT@croydon.gov.uk  I contacted them recently re my grandfather's grave and had a reply within 24 hours. Not only did I find him, but also his mother as well. Your g grandfather could also have been buried in Queen's Road cemetary, but they can  give you details of this.

That's great. Unfortunately I've had quite a bit to do with them lately as my mother died at the beginning of the year, and I've always found them very pleasant and most helpful.

I'll PM you with my e-mail address. If they come up with a grave and headstone in Croydon Crem ( Mitcham Road Cemetary) let me have the plot number and when I'm over there I'll see if I can take a photo for you.

Good luck

Jan

Nothing yet... the cemetery at Mitcham Road said they couldn't find it and gave me a number of email addresses to try... one was established too recently to have the grave, two emails didn't get delivered and I think there are two more that haven't been replied to yet...

Hi
I was wondering if you'd heard anything. Are you sure he was buried and not cremated? The other large cemeteries near Croydon are Beckingham and Streatham, so it could be either of those. Unless of course there was a family grave in a churchyard.  Hope you find him.

Have you used Google Street View to look at Ross Road?

I don't know whether he was buried or cremated. I know next to nothing about it. The email addresses that Mitcham Road forwarded to me included crematoria.

Thanks :)

It would be more common practice to have the internment at the Mitcham Road Cemetery but I see that Ross Road is toward the edge of the Borough at South Norwood which would bring the Beckenham Cemetery more into the picture.

There is also a possibility that he is at West Norwood Cemetery.

A possibility is to check the local Funeral Directors of 1953 and see if they still exist.A date of death would help in this.Local Trade Directorie may be found at Croydon Local Studies Library
