Title: Help with BD&M search please
Post by: elsie ellen on Friday 13 March 09 10:54 GMT (UK)
Hi all!

Francis (Frank) Highmore DEAN died in Robinvale, I think pre 1988. From his service detail on NAA I understand he was born in Mildura. His NOK was Sylvia Dean.

I am really keen to trace the significance of his middle name.

Help to find the names of his parents and grandparents would be really appreciated.

Thanks

Elsie

Hello Elsie,

It seems that the connection for the name 'Highmore' might come from
his mother Emily Sherring's family.

You may have this already:

I see Samuel in the 1861 census (indexed as Samuel J H SHERLING) living in Silton Dorset with his aunt Charlotte Stone b abt 1842 in Silton, unmarried, linen weaver.

I think he is listed as Highmore SHERRING in 1871 living in Gillingham, Dorset with George Fricker, butcher, wife Christiana Fricker, b abt 1832 in Silton, Dorset and their children ages 8 - 13.  Highmore SHERRING is listed as 'wife's son'

I cannot see him in 1881.

In 1861 Emily SHERRING is with her parents, John and Elizabeth and sister Blanch in Great Faringdon, Oxfordshire.
In 1871 (mistranscribed as SHERVEY) she is a boarder at Linden House, St Mary, Reading ('Ladies school')
In 1881 she is governess to the Swabey family in Great Faringdon, living at the Vicarage - Mr Swabey is the curate.
She is not in later censuses.

Cheers, Judith

Judith I think that is Samuel [occupation carpenter]with mother Christiana on the 1871 census. 1903 Electoral Roll Samuel James Highmore SHERRING is a contractor and by 1931 he is a carpenter.   Her 1st marriage with her name as Christian.

Marriages Mar 1854
SHERRING    Samuel Highmore     Bicester    3a/634
STONE    Christian     Bicester    3a/634

and Samuel's J H's death cert did show his father as Samuel.

There is this marriage but unfortunately only one groom is shown on the page

Marriages Jun 1857
SHERRING    Christian     Mere 5a/443
The district Mere spans the boundaries of the counties of Dorset, Somerset and Wiltshire

Death
Deaths Jun 1855
SHERRING    Samuel Highmore    Bicester   3a/382

And back to Australia, I found this headstone inscription at Melbourne General Cemetery

              SHERRING
In loving member of Emily
born 26 Jan 1857
died 3 Jan 1942
also husband of the above
Samuel
died 12 Jun 1950 aged 95 years

Religion C/E   Section BB  Grave No 1
[Register has this has Section BBA]

Death

Hi All,
I might need to shrink this but it is a link to another person's research on the DEAN family.
Among much other information it tells us that Evelyn Emily  Sherring b. Columbia [PER Cando]  born 1884 died in Mt Beauty in 1970
Father  Samuel James  Highmore.
Mother Emily Charlotte ?

Always cautious about othe peoples' research, but worth looking at ;D

Yes Sue I found that after my assumption  :-[  and pm'd it to Elsie. Like you,  I always treat other's research with caution unless it is well referenced.

Another possible place of birth for Emily could be British Columbia :-\  however no finds on the birth index

Elsie

Are you interested in going further back?  I have found the baptism of Christian STONE 1835 Silton, parents Mark Stone and Mary on IGI Batch No 1022430

http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=igi/search_IGI.asp&clear_form=true

There is also a marriage for
William Highmore SHERRING to Mary COX 29 April 1811, Abbas and Temple Combe, Somerset Batch 7208121

(Abbas Combe and Temple Combe are in the east of Somerset in the vicinity of Mere and Silton places of birth and marriage  already mentioned, but some 90 miles from Bicester where Samuel James Highmore is born in 1855 and where his parents were married,)

And the birth of William Highmore SHERRING in Hanbury Worcestershire  1867 (Cando found his death 1929 in Liverpool)

So it looks as though the HIGHMORE name may have been traditrional in the SHERRING family for over 200 years!

Cheers, Judith

Truly amazing!

I have just returned to find all this extra information. Thank you for your help in tring to find the Highmore link in this Dean family.

It now seems apparent that Francis Highmore Dean is linked to the "southern" branch of the Highmore family.

On the IGI, I have just found a possible link with the Highmore and Sherring family that we have been following. An Edward Sherring married a Mary Highmore in Milborn Port (?) in Somerset/Dorset 19 Feb 1801. Not proof I know, but it is food for thought.

I need now to take stock of all this and try to put the information in some sequence for myself. Will get back to you all once I have done that.

Cando, Raylen, Judy and Sue - I really appreciate your kind help.

Elsie

Hi Everyone,
I am coming to this conversation quite late but I think I can solve some questions.  I am the great-great-granddaughter of George and Christian Fricker.  Christian was born Christian STONE but married Samuel Highmore SHERRING before she married my great-great grandfather.  Christian and Samuel had one son Samuel James Highmore SHERRING.  But unfortunately Samuel senior died around the same time and Christian was widowed.  Now Samuel junior married another SHERRING, possibly a cousin, Emily Charlotte Elizabeth SHERRING.  They emigrated to Australia and settled in Mildura.  Some of their children were born there but others I think in Canada and the USA, maybe on the way.  I am currently trying to piece together their descendants.  Although we will only be distantly related I have always been keen to find them.  Samuel junior was often talked about in our family with fondness and descendants will be interested to know I have a letter written by Samuel to his mother Christian from Ultimo NSW in 1881 discussing his potential marriage to Emily.  In fact I have it here in front of me as I type.  Also my parents have a photo we believe to be of Samuel and Emily's children and another of there house in Mildura.  So here's hoping I can make someones Christmas with copies of these!  I look forward to hearing from people and making further progress with this family but well done for puzzling so much out about a confusing family already.
