Looking for birth record of David Conway who died Maghera 1951. David married Sarah Mc Kenna 1919 in Maghera RC Church. David's father was also named David. He may have lived in the townland of Falgortrevy around the 1930's.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Any idea when David Conway might have been born?
Index to Irish civil registrations now online (free) on LDS Pilot site. The details needed for ordering a birth certificate will be there.
http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=collectionDetails;t=searchable;c=1408347
You could also search IGI (www.familysearch.org) - they have some, not all, Irish births 1864-c1882.

Thank you for reply. I think David Conway was born sometime around 1883 he died Tamney Crescent, Maghera 1951 and was a postman. I have already tried family Search an American friend sent me details a few weeks ago but I am having trouble with the information on the pilot site. I know he married 1919 to Sarah McKenna and had 8 children. My problem is I can not find David's birth record hence I have no idea who his father is.

Checked index for birth of David Conway in Co. Londonderry and only 2 entries- one 1876 Coleraine district and other 1893 Ballymoney (Co.Antrim) district.
-
Thank you so much. I will try general records for both entries.

Hi,
A minor point which may help. I found a marriage of David Conway to SUSAN Mckenna on 29 Nov 1919 in Maghera R.C. Church
Regards

Not sure what you mean by 'general records'- what I searched was index to civil registrations (brth records). It's possible that David Conway was either born in another registration district, was older/younger than you thought or his birth is registered without a Christian name.

Sorry should have written General Records Office which holds civil records in Belfast. I had an idea the Conway family did not come from Maghera as I could not find them in the 1901 census. So your information is of great help as I now have an idea which areas to look up.
Many thanks

Maybe not so much a minor point if your details also records David Conway's fathers name on the marriage details you hold. I have been told by an older family member they think his name was also David Conway but I have nothing on paper.

Sorry, but my source does not give fathers' names

Thank you for checking.

The index to civil registrations should cover all GRONI listings. If you go to LDS Pilot site (link given earlier) and search for David Conway births (use blue links at top of page to narrow down even (birth) and date (by decade) you'll get a list of other possibilites without having to go to Belfast.
-
Tried it. That does make life a lot easier THANK YOU

Where do you recommend buying birth certs. I have tried GRONI using the details from Family Search but they do not recognize the details given from the site. Maybe the young girl I was talking to does not understand or is there another source I should be using to purchase the birth details ?
-
You SHOULD be able to order "transcriptions" (i.e. uncertified, but containing all the info on a ""real" birth certificate) from GRONI for £6 with the following details:
Name, District, Year (& Quarter if after 1878), Volume and Page.
These can be obtained from the LDS website but it seems to confuse the issue if you tell GRONI staff that's where you got them!
I know someone who ordered a couple last week and he was initially told you couldn't order using the LDS information. Then he gave them the above references (which he got from LDS) and they sent him the transcripts. ???
By the way, if you can get to Belfast the GRONI office in Chichester St allows you to get the information in person for £3 per entry, but you do have to book a couple of weeks in advance as space is very limited. Once you're there though, the post 1922 indexes (and earlier marriage index) are excellent and very easily searched. For pre 1922 births and deaths, check out the references on LDS pilot site before you go.

Yes this is the same problem I had today only they would not take my details at all. I think I will now try to email my details maybe they will understand the written information better.
I have already been to GRONI in Belfast but this system through Family Search will save a lot of time and trouble.
If only the GRONI staff where trained to know what we are talking about.
Thank you for your response it was helpful to know I was not on my own with this problem.
thank you everyone for your help with my Conway query ;

If it's a birth certificate that's wanted the Magherafelt Registry Office won't be able to supply it- they only keep marriage registers.

I think I need the information from the marriage cert to confirm the fathers name. That way I can maybe go about looking for a birth cert.
Thank you Wonderinglady and Aghadowey for your help.
