Hi everybody,
I have a little story which provides a challenge.
The story goes Anne was the product of a Duke and another ones Duchess the only children from both families. She was sent to Scotland for schooling before returning south to England.
In 1871 she is in Finsbury aged 27
In 1881 she is in Southwark aged 37
In 1891 and 1901 she is in Bermondsey aged 47 and 57. On 1871 census surname misspelt Dowset and in 1881 it is misspelt Dorositt
She married James Thomas Dowsett on 18 April 1864 in St Giles and from her marriage certificate her fathers name is given as John Joseph Chalner Pearse and her Mother Anne.
By 1881 she is living with George Dowsett, James brother
She died on 2 Aug 1904 and was born around 1843-44
The challenge is, I am unable to find any birth details of Anne, her birth place is consistent on every census as London, Middlesex, or any record of her in Scotland, could somebody possibly help please.

From the marriage certificate, is her mother really given? Who are the witnesses at the marriage? What is her father's occupation given as, or is he deceased? What address is given for her?
I see that in 1871 there is living with them a 'visitor', "John Pearse" (or Perse?), 20, a potman, b. London.

Hi Jorose,
Many thanks for your interest.
Her Mothers name was gained from census info and an Ann Chalner Pearse who I believe is her Mother is also one of the witnesses, the other witness being George ? but not Dowsett.
Fathers occupation House Painter and she was resident at 17 Tower Street, St Giles.
The John in the 1871 census is in fact John Joseph Chalner Pearse her father.

The John Pearse living with the Dowsetts in 1871 appears to be only 20, though, so I would have thought he was a brother. There is another John in the area ("Pearce") but he seems to be married to an Ellen - occupation isn't right, either.
Which census do you have her mother Ann on, and what are her details?
-
Hi Jorose,
Yes you are quite right he is the brother which leaves me with only Ann as a witness on the marriage certificate.

Hi Tom
I can help you on all of this - I have the BC of Ann Maria and can scan a copy for you. I am a direct descendant of the John Pearse that you mention in the 1871 census; he was indeed her brother. Click on my name and send me a private post with your email address and I will bet back to you.

Dear Lawrence
For many years I tried to obtain the birth certificate of Ann Maria Pearse Chanler, she was my Great Great Grandmother. I gather from her baptism record that she was born on July 3rd 1843.
After hiring two separate genealogists who also had no luck I gave up the search and resigned myself to the fact it just did not exist for whatever reason. I was VERY excited to read your posting saying you actually have this elusive certificate relating to Ann Maria! I would so grateful if you could please let me know the reference details so that I can apply to the register office and get a copy for myself.
Do hope you read this and can help.
Many thanks in advance

Welcome Betty :)
In case we can help while you wait for Lawrence - what details are given on the baptism record you mention?

I see an old thread elsewhere on the same family:
http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/Middlesex_County_UK/2009-12/1260298034
"The first child was born in 1843 in St Giles: daughter of John Joseph Calender and Ann Hutchinson now Richardson".

Hello Betty
I certainly can help you on all this. I have a copy both of Ann's birth and baptismal certificate, and will willingly scan and send you copies if you wish to save you the cost of obtaining the BC. I can also tell you a great deal about Ann's father and her siblings. You may also be interested to know that one of Ann's uncles was the grandfather of the leader of the Easter Uprising in 1916. I am very happy to exchange email addresses to make further communication easier. Please let me know how you would like to proceed.

I should have thought to add, Betty, that I can also give you details about the very sad death of Ann's father.

Hello Lawrence
Thank you so much for replying! I'm keen to see Ann Maria's BC after searching for it for such a long time. It's kind of you to offer to email a copy, I can't seem to send you a private message though along with my email address - it may be because I am a new member to RootsChat.
I am aware of the sad circumstances surrounding the death of Ann's father but I didn't know about the Easter Uprising family connection...how interesting. I would love to find out why John Joseph and Ann kept changing their surname, I hope you know the answer Lawrence.
I will keep trying to send you a private note with my email address.
Thanks again.

Hi Betty
if you look at people's avatars on the left of the screen, there are small icons underneath, one looks like a clipboard and this is the personal message one. Click on it to access the personal message system.
If their icon is glowing bright green there is a good chance the other person is online
You can also send a message via a users profile, here's Lawrences, the link to personal messages is at the bottom left
