Trying to find who his father was, and if his parents were married.
Nicholas was born in Wigan or Pemberton area, about 1855. His mother was Ellen Houghton.
By 1861 census his mother had married a William Highton but I've no info on Nicholas before this date.
Anyone with B.M.D access please look up
Thankyou ;)

Hi insomniac,
Have you seen this on FreeBMD, which is available online free to all (just google it):
NICHOLAS HOUGHTON
Births SEP (i.e., third quarter) 1854
Wigan
8c, 63
Also from same source:
ELLEN HOUGHTON & WILLIAM HIGHTON
Marriages JUN 1857
Wigan
8c, 74
And:
NICHOLAS HOUGHTON & MARY JANE FORSHAW
Marriages SEP 1879
Wigan
8c, 53
I double-checked the marriages on Lancashire BMD (also free online).

Yes I saw that, but William Highton is not the father of Nicholas. I can't find Ellen Houghton/Hightons birth so i am guessing she was previously married to Nicholas' father, and that Houghton was her married name.Thats where i am stuck and need to find who Nicholas' father was, so i can trace their marriage.

On Lancs BMD they usually put the previous surname of a widow as a link to their name as they don't know which is the maiden and which is the previously married name.
Your Ellen does not have a link. Which would lead me to believe that she was not married when she had Nicholas (and possibly Ellen as she is 8 on the 1861 census and older than Nick)
Pemberton according to GENUKI was part of the parish of Wigan, searching the batch numbers for Wigan in 1831 gives us
Ellen HOUGHTON
Birth 10 April 1831
Chr. 8 Sept 1831 Wigan Lancashire
Parents
William HOUGHTON
Elizabeth

I think you may need to buy the marriage cert to ascertain her fathers name for certain :)
