Title: John Love ALLEN
Post by: pottydotty on Sunday 08 March 09 16:44 GMT (UK)
Can anybody help me find out a little about my father? He died when I was very young and my mother remarried.
His name was JOHN LOVE ALLEN I think he was born about 1903 in Limavady, Derry. He died from cancer on 26 Jul 1937 in Derry aged 28/29.
He married SARAH PATRICIA RYAN about 1929 in Derry.
Thank you.
Mary

Mary,
Your dates are a bit late for my sources but I had a look for an Allen/Love connection and found that Thomas Allen married Margaret Love in Glendermott 1st Presbyterian Churchon 31 Jul 1913, possibly a bit late for you.
As a boy in the 1950s I remember two Love families in the Aghanloo district to the north of Limavady but have no information on them.

Regards

Mary,
I have done a bit more digging on the new LDS Pilot Site and come up with John Love Allen birth registered in Limavady district in the Apr-Jun quarter 1914. The marriage I listed previously may very well be his parents.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Here I am in my 70s and now finding out about my father. I know he was disowned because he changed his religion to marry Sarah Patricia. Her father JOSEPH RYAN married a MARY DEMPSEY abt 1904 in Derry but who their parents were I am still looking.
I am very new to all this but do hope to find a little bit out.

Once again Thank you.

Mary- 'recent' information can sometimes be difficult to get but it looks like you've already gotten some details on your parents' family.

The 1911 census for Co. Derry is going to be coming online 'soon' according to National Archives site (although each section of the project has been delayed so I can't see them having all of 1911 done by this summer). When it comes online hopefully you'll get lots more details on your parents, grandparents, etc.

Thank you again for all the info.

Is there any way I can find out any thing else about JOSEPH RYAN, MARY DEMPSEY or JOHN LOVE ALLEN families?

Is there a 1901c I could look at? I can't find very much on Latter Day Saints or any other free sites and a friend has looked on Ancestry for me but Northern Ireland seems to have been ignored.

I did have a brother but I heard he died a few years ago, I have no idea who he married or any children there might be.

Ancestry doesn't have many Irish records in its database which is why you weren't able to find much there. LDS site (www.familysearch.org) have a bit more in the way of Irish records but not really anything as recent as you are now looking for (for example, many, not all, Irish births 1864-c1882).

LDS Pilot site has recently added index to Irish civil registrations (birth, marriages, deaths) and for Northern Ireland the index goes up to 1921.
http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=collectionDetails;t=searchable;c=1408347

1901 census is available from several sources (not online yet- it will be added to National Archives website after they get 1911 for all Ireland done) such as PRONI, some Northern Ireland libraries like Ballymena, and LDS libraries. You can order 1901 census from your local LDS library for a small fee if they don't have it in stock but as it's not indexed you have to know which film to order.

Details of living people, or recently deceased people, shouldn't be posted here. If you want to send me a PM I'll try to answer any questions you might have that can't be put on this thread.

Thank you aghadowey for your help.

Now I am wondering if I can get any further back in my history. My father JOHN LOVE ALLEN parents were THOMAS ALLEN and MARGARET LOVE. They were married 31 Jul 1913 at 1st. Pres. Church (Glandermott - is that a place?) I have no further data. Can anyone help me find out their dates or parents?

On the other side my mother SARAH PATRICIA RYAN (dob 12 Mar 1906) her parents were JOSEPH RYAN (dob 1872 Strabane) MARY JANE DEMPSEY (dob 1867 at 0479 Articlave). JOSEPH's parents were MICHAEL RYAN and MARY O'NEIL (dob abt 1835 Newtown Limavady) Joseph also had a sister Lizzie.

MARY's parents were DANIEL DEMPSEY and MARY JANE McGONIGAL.

That is all the information I have, can anybody help me get further back or find some dates for me?? Or just helping me in showing me where to find out these facts. It seems to be very difficult to find anything out through the usual sites.

Thank you.

Looks like this might be some of your family:

Michael Ryan m. Mary O'Neil (see www.familysearch.org)
1. Joseph born 9 Feb.1872 Co.Derry (not Strabane)
2. David born 21 Nov.1873 Londonderry (city) district, Co.Derry
3. Patrick born 2 Mar.1876 Co.Derry
4. Rebecca born 14 Apr.1878 Co.Derry

From the same source is Mary Jane Dempsey born 28 Oct.1867 Articlave district, daughter of Daniel Dempsey & Mary Jane McGonigal.
(the 0749 in your post is the page number in the birth register).

Thank you so much. I searched familysearch.org and came up with nothing. I will have another look just to satisfy myself, after lunch.

I found the entries by doing parent search- on the main search page fill in father's first and last name then mother's first name (and last if known) and nothing else, then click search.

Hello Mary hope you are still checking out Rootschat as I have information regarding John Love Allen. John Allen was born July 1907 Yorkshire where his father was working at that time. His father was Joseph Allen 1860-1924 and mother was Martha Jane Ross 1869-1948. The Allen family lived at Ballyrisk , Limavady, Co Derry where members of the family still farm. Joseph and Martha are buried in the Reformed Pres. Church, Limavady were they have a headstone.
John Allen was one of 12 siblings. You have a large number of relatives in the USA, and also relatives in and around the Limavady area.
Regards,
Ronnie

Hello Ronnie,
Thank you so very much for all the information on John Love ALLEN.
I had almost given up on any hope of finding any relations
I have just been onto the 1901c and found John's father Joseph ALLEN living as a boarder in Middlesborough. Interesting he is there with a friend named John LOVE. I wonder if that is where John Love Allen got his name.
Do you have any more nuggets you could pass on or could you tell me where I could find some more information.
Once again thank you very much for your help.
Sincerely
Mary

Hello Mary, good to know that you got my mail.
Yes I think your father was given Love as a middle name as the Love family were neighbours. Check out Ireland National Archives 1901/1911 census for co Londonderry, and in DED box enter KEADY. Here you will find the Allen Family. Also if you enter Ross as surname you will find my grandfather Sam Ross who was a Brother of Martha Allen. Their father Robert Ross and mother Jane Forsythe can also be found, our great grandparents. Bedtime now but will give info on the siblings of Jack tomorrow.

Hello James,
Pleased to meet you. It does sound as though we are related.
Unfortunately I can't send you a PM (private message) until you have made three posts and this site won't let you put your private addresses on.

Hello Marie.
Like you, I've been looking for a long time for my aunt.  When I was a young man (16), a aunt sent me a card for my birthday.  All my questions  about her  were never answered.
To determine whether we are indeed related, I have a few questions for you, if you dont mind.
Did you know my grandmother's address in Rosemount that i sent in my last mail?
What was the instrument in the house and in which room was it?
Do you  remember the name of my mother?
What kind of sport did Grandmother  sometimes play?

Sorry  about  my bad englisch.  But I have been living in Germay for the past 38 Years.
I am really looking forward to an answer from you,
i wish you a   Merry Christmas.
James.

Dear James, It was a real thrill to hear from you.  I have only recently got my own laptop and my friend has been doing some searching for me .  I have much more information of course but will only share it when we can
email each other.  The instrument in the front room was a piano, which my poor mother tried unsuccessfully
to encourage me to play and I remember it cost her 2/6p in old money for tuition !

I have only just joined RootsChat so will also have a probationary period before PM mail is allowed.

Best wishes for 2012.

Mary
