Title: Joseph Dore Beal who was his father?
Post by: groom on Saturday 07 March 09 18:56 GMT (UK)
Hi can any one help with this request I've received from a friend?

"Joseph Dore Beal born 1839 Oxfordshire, christened 25 August 1839 Cogges, Witney, Oxfordshire. I have all his marriage and death details etc so don't need those.

What I'm after is his parentage...

Mother: Charlotte Beal (she was christened 24th May 1812 at St Mary's Church, Cogges, Witney). She shows as his mother on the christening record. She goes on to marry a George Gardner in 1845. He has two sons and in 1851 Joseph Beal is shown living with them. In 1841, as a 2 year old, he is shown living with grandmother Jane and Charlotte 26.

Father: Another site has his father as Joseph Dore Beal, but no mother. Same site also has George Gardner as his father  So there is an anomaly here.

Charlottes parents were Thomas Beal born 1778 and Jane Day (already had her). they had:

John 20.2.1803, died 1803;
Jane 7.12.1806
James 1807 - have his later details
George 16.4.1809, died 1809
and, of course, Charlotte

I had 'assumed' Joseph Dore Beal was the father from the info to hand and also that he was the son of Jane (and Thomas) and therefore may have been Janes brother!!!!
All the above dates are the christening dates and they were all born in Cogges.

Now, either the site that has Joseph Dore Beal as his father has used supposition (which is highly likely) or I have to call it quits and change the tree to show only Charlotte Beal as his mother.

Please see what you can do with Rootschat - if you understand a tenth of what I've said above that is!"

Any ideas of where she can go from here? I think the father could have been a Dore and there is a Dore family with two sons in their twenties and a father called Joseph in Oxfordshire in the 1841 census, but I've no idea how you can prove/disprove  a connection.

Thanks

Jan

Hello,
does Joseph name a father on his marriage certificate?

The site you refer to has a christening record which is extracted and that names Charlotte as his mother.
The other references to a father are submissions which I think,as you say, are probably assumptions, unless he has put that name on his marriage certificate.

I think that when it was possible, a father's name was given as a middle name so perhaps there was a father 'Dore'. The actual parish record may have notes re this and that is a possible lead.

Strangely, I can find no birth record of a Joseph Beal/ Dore on Free BMD.

best wishes
heywood

H
Thanks for looking.
Apparently it says "father unknown" on the marriage certificate. I think you're right and my friend has probably come to a dead end unless she has a lucky break through. Luckily I don't think it is a direct line.

The OFHS Cogges pr transcript of the baptism entry has no mention of the name Dore, just that Joseph Beal was the illegitimate son of Charlotte.

Thank you

This is what I thought. Looks like a dead end.

Ah well - there you have the plain truth! Sometimes there is a note in the register re the 'alleged' father who I suppose would have agreed to that!

Hi,
i have most of the Dore's in Oxford in my tree. There are only 3 Joseph's which could fit the bill time wise.
Joseph born in 1766 - he was already married to Mary Pratley in 1790.
Joseph born 1815 - died in 1815
Joseph born 1816 to James Dore (1799-1877) + Joyce Franklin (1791-1868). He was born in Leafield and died in 1839. No marriage recorded for him.
There are no other joseph's until 1842.
Hope that helps,
colin dore

All the very best
