Apart from census records, does anyone know if any records exist for the Scarborough Workhouse?
My g-g-grandfather, Major BARKER (b. 1829, Muston) was in the Workhouse at the time of the 1841 census and I would like to try and find out how long he was there, whether any other family members were with him etc.. By 1851 he was elsewhere.
I only know his mother's name (Margaret) from his baptism records but have not been able to find out any more about parents or possible siblings.
Anything anyone could tell me would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi and welcome to rootschat
It does look as if he was illegitimate from the fact that the baptism record on the IGI only mentions his mother. I would suspect his father was a Mr Major. Have you looked at the original register? That may hold more information. If you click on the batch number at the bottom of the IGI record and just put Barker in the search box there are a couple of other entries who may be connected.
If the workhouse records exist they will be at the local archives office - probably the Beverley one.

Hello, welcome from me too :)
If you go to this website http://www.workhouses.org.uk/ and enter Scarborough into the search box, there is information about the workhouse.
North Yorkshire County Record Office, Malpas Road, Northallerton DL7 8TB
hold the Minutes (1837-84) and Children's Home committee minutes (1920-30).

Thank you both very much... this will give me some leads to work on.
I live in Australia so generally must rely on what is available on-line.
Thanks again.

Hi,
If you email the records office they would be able to advise you on whether the records you need are there and perhaps they would be able to do a search for you

I have just posted a message which may be in the wrong place and you may not receive it. I am transcribing two books of workhouse records for Scarborough Library and the East Yorkshire Family History Society and I think one of them will cover 1841. I will have a look when I next go in and see if I can find anyone by the name of Barker for you.

Thank-you!

To AMCass
Could you possibly do a look up in the Scarborough Workhouse records for me? My g.g.grandparents Hugh & Hannah Procter were inmates on the 1861 census and I know they were there in 1859 as Peter Higginbotham writes in his article on Scarborough Workhouse that "On December 4th 1859 the aged paupers were transported 'by omnibus' from the old premises to the new workhouse." Among others these included "A Lancashire plasterer and his wife in their earlier sixties" - these were my aforementioned g.g. grandparents. I would like to know if the records you are transcribing contain any mention of them.
Thank you
Ian Procter

Hi,
The two books of records I have transcribed date from1837 to 1845 and from 1853 to March 1858. I cannot find any mention of Hugh or Hannah Procter in either book. This suggests that they didn't go into the workhouse until after that date but before the move in 1859. There is however, a James Proctor, born 1777 who came into the workhouse on 23rd April 1840. He was a sailor and a widdower and he had no work. He died in the workhouse on 13 November 1853.

Hello Anita
Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately the James Procter is not one of "mine" as my Procters did not move to Scarborough from Leeds until the mid 1800s.

Hi Ian
I am researching the Procter family for a member of my husbands family. Her great great grandparents are Hugh Procter and Hannah Warriner (IGI marriage 24 Dec 1818 St Peter, Leeds). I think Hugh Procter was the son of Henry Procter - is that the info you have?
The line I am researching follows with John Warriner Procter born 1826 (IGI christening 16 July 1826 St Peter, Leeds) who married Frances Masterman (IGI 1 July 1851 St Olave, York - Sept quarter 1851 York 23 753). Frances died pre-1861 and John married Harriet dunn at Scarborough in 1862. Their son, George Warriner Procter and his wife Eliza Jane Kilvington continues this line.
I have noted that Hugh and Hannah were resident in the Workhouse on Aberdeen Walk, Scarborough in 1861 and that Hannah died later that year.
I was wondering if you have any further information either on Hugh and Hannah's time in the workhouse or on Hugh's parents.
Regards
Jess

Hello Jess
I am descended from Hugh Procter b.1865 who was George Warriner's brother. I have quite a lot of information on the Procter family after they arrived in Scarborough (which is where I originated).
I don't have any further information about Hugh & Hannah's time in the workhouse but I do have both their death certificates. The only thing I know about Hugh is that he was the son of Henry Procter a weaver from Ulverston but have been unable to get any further back as I don't know the name of his wife.
I have quite a lot of information about William Procter (brother of John Warriner) including photographs of his son sent to me by one of his descendants in Australia. I also have a photo of Sarah Ellen Procter (sister of Hugh & George Warriner) taken on her wedding day. Does your relative have any family photographs?
Thank you for getting in touch.
Regards
Ian (Procter)

Hello Ian
Thanks for your reply.
I don't think my husband's relative has any photographs of the Procter family. However, it is almost 2 years since she first asked me if I could find anything out about the family and I found my notes a few weeks ago when I was cleaning out my wardrobe! I only started researching the family a week or so ago and haven't even spoken to her about my research so far.
Any info you have on the Procters would be very welcome - and photographs would be absolutely wonderful. We will be visiting my husband's relatives this weekend so I will pass on all I have found out then and I will ask if she has any Procter family photographs.
I couldn't find Hugh Procter's death record on freebmd.org.uk. When did he died?

Hello Jess
I have been working on the Procter tree for some years & have 5 A4 pages on my genealogy report on my Famliy Tree Maker file. I am trying to decide what is the best way to send it to you without it all going onto rootschat. I think it would be best if I had your email address and wonder if you could send it to me via private messages on this site. Let me know what you think?
Hugh died in the workhouse on 11th July 1864. Cause of death was Hepatic Disease.
