Oops! Sorry, maybe not after all :-X ;D
Marriage Jun 1904
John Hocking Bassett - Louisa Williams
-
Morning Tati
On the money as usual .... sigh ;D
The 1911 has father down as John H Bassett, but that is not viewing the original document, so unless there is a transcription error I think we are ok.
David
-
Well, maybe not, given the marriage registration. Was he definitely born in Linkinhorne?
-
According to the 1911 census, but would have been registered in Liskeard I think? I can't view the 1901 census due to my firewall at work (naughty me).
David
-
I can't see a better match for a John born Linkinhorne.
In 1881 this family goes by the name Hawkin

Tati
That is close to genius!
All the names and ages correlate to the 1991 - very well done. But why did they drop the Bassett in the 1881, or, include the Bassett in the 1991?
The plot thickens!!

Maybe dad was illegitimate and that's why he used 2 names. I'll try to find him on earlier censuses.

What do you think of this as a marriage?
Marriages Mar 1869
Bassett John Exeter 5b 164
Hill Thomas E. Stonehouse 5b 164
Snow Jane Denford Exeter 5b 164
Stocker Elizabeth Exeter 5b 164
Would have meant Elizabeth marrying at 16/17, was that legal? ???
-
Oh yes, it would have been legal with parental consent. I'll try and find them in 1871 to see if they are already together.
Odd - tracing the Bassets Back, William and Margery are already together as Bassett in 1851 and 1841 (=before John's birth).
-
Well guess what - I can't spot him in 1871 ::) :(
-
This is useful (IGI 1881) for William Bassett born in Morval, widowed
showing father in laws surname as Southern which was thus Margery's maiden name:
Dwelling Penquite Cottage
Census Place St Germans, Cornwall, England

It's the other way round - William Bassett is father in law to John Southern, who apparently married his daughter Sarah ;)
-
I think I found a better marriage :D
Marriage Dec 1872 Liskeard 5c 107
John Hawkin Basset - Elizabeth Ann Kemp

I think we have exhausted this line, thanks you so much for your guidance as always you are a marvel.
Kind regards
David
-
Someone else will add to it I'm sure :D
Who can see Elizabeth Ann Kemp, born Exter 1852, in 1861 and 1871? :P
-
I now need to tie in:
Sidney Charles Bassett :
Birth Mar Q 1921
Bassett Sidney C Hooper Liskeard 5c 68
parents:
Sidney Hocking Bassett and Beatrice Maud Hooper
There just must be a connection with our Hocking Bassets?!?
-
I hope for you, David ;D ;D
I can see a possible link. Remember William H who was 15 in 1891? He goes on to have a son Sidney it seems.

Noting your bottom comment above is there a Sidney Hocking with the family in 1901?
David
-
Must check. (Edit: no - but there are 2 new children: Rose age 9 and Florence G age 4)
In the meantime this could be a birth registration:
Sydney Thomas Bassett
Sep 1900 Liskeard 5c 39
-
Marriage Dec 1920
Beatrice M Hooper - Sidney H Bassett
Liskeard 5c 158
-
Polly dies in 1904 and William H Bassett seems to remarry the following year (to possibly Elizabeth Mildren).
I've finally found Sid in 1911, staying with grandma Merina Hodge:
Sidney Hocking Basset age 10
Meanwhile, dad William H Bassett seems to be in the same household as an Elizabeth age 39, an Edith age 9 and a Garfield age 4 (who was probably registered as Thomas Garfield H Bassett).
-
William Bassett
Birth: 26 APR 1801 Morval, Cornwall, England
Death: 1883
Parents: John Bassett Family / Mary Lyssom
Marriage: Margey Hocken 1822 Cornwall
Was this member-submitted? Seeing how they used Bassett and Hocking, I have my doubts that John and Margety ever married ... although John's birth was registered as Bassett :P
-
Tati,
thank you so much you are a star as always. I haven't read it through yet so I haven't quite worked out where Polly fits iun but I will do that now.
Thanks
David ;D

Just to make sure I have got it, are we saying that this William H Bassett
married Polly Hodge who gave birth to Sidney H Bassett; WHB then re-married Elizabeth.
Sidney H Bassett married Beatrice Maud Hooper wwho gave birth to Sidney Charles Bassett - QED?

I can't identify William Hodge with any certainty on earlier censuses - there is one William Hodge born Cruwys Morchard but he's older than expected: born ca. 1835 :-\

Welcome to RootsChat Lauralouu1 :)
I hope David comes online soon - he's the one who was interested in this family.
Just read through this thread again. Regarding the mysterious name change - do you have John's birth cert to confirm his mother's maiden name? Have you ever found a marriage for his parents?
Sorry, only questions and no answers!
:)
