Title: Milliken & Robinson
Post by: dwrcrawford on Wednesday 04 March 09 15:17 GMT (UK)
Hello again everyone,

I am moving on to my mums side of the family and have managed ok but it is proving difficult to get much earlier than my Gt Gt Grandparents.

They were Robert Milliken and Susan (Susanna) Robinson. They can be found in Ballytweedy in 1911 census with their 2 children Robina (my Gt granny) and Mary Agnes and their nephew Bob Young.
I believe they were married at Loanends United Pres. on 25/10/1894 but havent found that record on ancestryireland to find out details of their parents.

Can anyone offer any help withthis couple.

Thanks

Index to civil registrations:
Robert Milliken Oct./Dec.1894 Antrim registration district vol. 1 page 39
Susan Robinson "

above details are enough to order the marriage certificate.

I am going to order this and several other records but where do I do this? can it be done online? and is it cheaper to go through the record office in the republic of ireland?
I'm afraid i have limited myself to online records so far and need to be pointed in the right direction.
Thanks

I was at GRONI today and the guy on the desk told me that if you have the year, quarter, district, volume and page details (available from the familyseach pilot site) you can order a "transcription" of birth and death registration entries from them by phone, paying by credit or debit card.  This will cost £6, rather than the usual £12 for a certificate.  For marriages its best to phone the local registration office (i.e. the local council covering the area where the marriage took place) - they can accept payment over the phone and send you a transcription of the marriage entry.  Most councils I've tried charge around £3 for this service.

This compares with (I believe) €6 for a photocopy of the entry from Roscommon, but there you have to pay in Euros or send your credit card info (incl security code) by post which some Rootschatters are reluctant to do.  [Please someone let me know if this RoI information isn't right as I have't used them recently so can't speak from personal experience.]

For anyone who is interested I have had great success with this line in the last few days.

I finally got round to ordering the marriage certificate for Robert Milliken and Susan Robinson when i retunred home to NI last week.

I also took the time to go to their graves in Carmavy graveyard in Killead.

Whilst there I also went to the nearby churches of Killead and Loanends and spent some time investigating the graveyards in all 3 locatons. The Loanends and Killead graveyards revealled names of other potential family members at that time.

Long and short of it was I found a grave marked the burial ground of the family of Samuel Milliken 1894 in Killead and a family plot for George Robinson (+ several close family members) in Loanends.

I felt these were good hopeful names for the parents of my Robert & Susan & had my fingers crossed for the certificate when it arrived.

I was delighted on Saturday to receive the document and it revealled i was correct on both counts....queue adding some more info to the family tree and expecting that might be it for the Milliken side....but more on that later!

From the grave in Loanends I know that George Robinson was married to an Agnes and had a son Andrew who was therefore a brother of Susan. This Andrew Robinson seems to have been quite well educated as he has several letters after his name and was (i believe) an architect in Dublin and Belfast.

The marriage certificate for Robert and Susan says they are both from Ballytweedy.

For some reason I decided last night to try a search on google of "Milliken Ballytweedy" and was amazed/delighted/astounded to find a rootsweb page where someone had listed the baptisms and marriages from Killead and Loanends churches for the Millikens in the early-mid 19th century....and this gave me the detailled family of Samuel Milliken including his wifes full name and the dates of birth of several kids and also his and her parents names from their marriage in 1844!

I was able to extrapolate several related families based on this info and tidy up some news clippings which had been in the Milliken Family Bible for people who i couldnt place accurately... including one for my previously unknown GGG granny Mary Jane Milliken (nee Adsay).

Finally, I went to the original google search and discovered a link that said something about the 1851 census...which i followed and discovered that all along there has been some census fragments for the area that i hadnt been aware of and i now had a date of death for my GGGG grandfather Alexander Milliken who i'd only just learned about 10min before and the names of several brothers of my GGG grandfather samuel milliken, whose young family was also named in great detail.

Anyway, I was excited and wanted to share and also have the hope that someone will search for Milliken on this site one day and get linked here where i can help them.

Now if anyone has any information on the family name ADSAY i would be delighted....it seems to be a Turkish name!!! How a turk ended up in Antrim in the 1800s would likely be an interesting story. I shall start a thread in a second to see if it sparks any messages.

Turns out the author of the website has misread the parish register and the surname should be Adgey.
Less exciting in one way, but at least it is a name which can be found in the area at the time!  :)
