Title: Robert Jackson - Island Magee
Post by: rosndel on Wednesday 04 March 09 08:05 GMT (UK)
I am hoping that somebody with access to published books of Gravestone Inscriptions of Island Magee might be able to help me find Robert Jackson of Carnspindle, Island Magee who died on 8 July 1907. He was married to Mary Bradford in whom I have an interest. I am hoping that a gravestone might give me more information about her and their family. They had sons William Bradford Jackson, and Luke Jackson. Robert's will also mentions a George Alexander Jackson. Thank you in advance for any help.

Oops! Sorry, I knew he married Martha not Mary. I have their wedding certificate and I am interested in any gravestone inscription in the hope that it might give me Martha's death date. Thank you for the quick replies.

Hi,

Thank you, June. I believe George Alexander Jackson is the son of Robert Jackson and Martha Bradford - though I have not been able to find a birth to prove it. This adds to what I have on the family. A George Alexander Jackson is an executor of his father's will.

I think Martha (nee Bradford) , Robert's wife my have died in Sep. Quarter 1880 and I was hoping for some confirmation that I have the correct death.

Thank you for the replies above. My particular interest is in the Bradford name. It is amazing what is now available online and I do appreciate you helpful people who give your time to assist with information that cannot be found that way.

Hi Rosndel

Some more info on your Martha Bradford :

Martha Bradford - Born 7 Feb 1842 (baptised 3/6/1842 page 505) - parents James Bradford & Isabella Donaldson from Ballydown (townland beside Carnspindle) Donaldson connection with Grandson John's name

Brother William Bradford - born 15 Oct 1840
Both baptised in Islandmagee 1st Presb by William Campbell

Point of interest - a Hugh Bradford was married to Eliza Donaldson from Ballydown also ( maybe a double wedding ) they had 3 children that I found 1846-51

Something else I came across was that an Isabella Donaldson had 7 children with a James Bell 1846-1860 ( any chance of a second marraige ) lived in Dundressan townland approx 1 mile away.

In regards to Martha Jackson nee Bradford's burial I would imagine it to be in Ballypriomore graveyard.

There are 4 graveyards on the Island, in earliest to oldest :
1. Ballykeel Graveyard - 17th century +
2. Ballypriomore Graveyard - 18th century +
3. Islandmagee New Cemetery - 1925 +
4. St Johns Churchyard - 18ty century + but I think its C.O.I ( yours were presby)

Carnspindle, Ballydown, 1st Presby and Ballypriomore are in a half a mile-ish radius apart so they were all pretty much next door neighbours really.

If theres a kind soul heading to PRONI I'm they could check the graveyard listings for Ballypriomore and Ballykeel for you.

Regards

June

Something else

Martha's parents James and Isabella were married 3 May 1838 by the same boy William Campbell in the same church page 79. Isabella's dad was John Donaldson  ( farmer ) from Gransha townland ( nearby )
Wright and Tweed (surnames) were witnesses.
Another brother was Robert

Hi June,

Thank you for all your help. You have actually put your finger on my source of frustration with some of the information you have provided! Making use of the civil records now available,I had begun to work forward from my gggrandfather Hugh Bradford who is listed in the Tithe Applotment Books in 1834 (with a number of his sons James, John, Robert, Samuel, and Wiliam) on Islandmagee.  Hugh Snr had  a younger son, Hugh, who married Eliza/Elizabeth Donaldson and was my ggrandfather. (He came to Australia so I have quite a lot on him.)

The Isabella Donaldson who married James Bradford was born abt 1808, came from Gransha, and you have provided the information that her father was John Donaldson.

The Isabella Donaldson, born about 1816 who married James Bell was first of all the wife of one of the Bradfords - perhaps John or Robert. She married as Isabella Bradford, widow, of Ballydown where the Bradfords were living, and her father was John Donaldson (from her marriage certificate)

My ggrandmother Elizabeth was the daughter of John Donaldson and Elizabeth Wright and she was born at Gransha (from her Australian death certificate)

There was a witness with the name of Wright at the wedding of Isabella (born 1808)  and the Isabella born 1816 gave the name of Wright to some of her children.

They must both belong on the branch somewhere but which is my greatgrandmother's sister!

You have kindly provided the list of graveyards on Islandmagee. Is there also a list of churches? Are there parish records which might help unravel the mysteries? I would appreciate hearing of any source that can be accessed from afar.

Going through older posts and came across this one. By now you might have been able to find more information but if you haven't done so the following might be of interest.

"Probate of the Will of Robert Jackson late of Carnspindle Islandmagee County Antrim Farmer who died 8 July 1907 granted at Belfast to George Alexander Jackson and Luke Jackson Farmer." See www.proni.gov.uk for full details including the transcript of his Will from the Will Book.

Thank you so much for your interest, Aghadowey. I had already accessed the marvellous resource in the Wills images now online. In fact , through the wills images I found the answer to the puzzle of the two Isabella Donaldsons mentioned in an earlier post. In fact, the two were one and the answer was that there were two James Bradfords. One married Isabella Donaldson and left her widowed and she then married James Bell. The other married Isabella Napier and that Isabella obligingly left a will that supplied the explanation!
