Hello, I am keen to get information on the E and W Sussex 1785 Land Tax, as follows, if at all possible for the BAX surname in these areas:
- in Itchingfield and Southwater near Horsham (now W Sussex)
- in Newick and Chailey ( E Sussex)
- in Slaugham, Cuckfield and Wivelsfield (now W Sussex?)
- in Ardingly (W Sussex)
Also, do the records tell you where exactly people lived, like Tithe records? Can they be mapped?
Many thanks
Stephen Bax

Hi Stephen,
Nothing in Itchingfield or Southwater.
In Newick there is the following person,
Owner: John Box (might have been transcribed wrong)
Occupier: Himself
Lands: His land
Rental: £1
Nothing in Chailey.
Nothing in Slaugham.
Nothing in Cuckfield.
Nothing in WIvelsfield.
In Ardingly, again this could be a transcription error.
Owner: Chapman
Occupier: John Box
Rental: £1
Owner: William, Newnham gent
Occupier: John Box jr
Rental: £1
Having a look in the index of both books I cannot see a BAX mentioned anywhere ! Sorry !
The records give the name of a house or land sometimes but that is about it.
Regards
Sean
