Hi Nicola

The dates are not exclusive, so you have to consider they may have been stationed in the IOW either side of the date shown:

= 1827 – 21st Regiment of Foot
= 1827 – 87th
= 1830 – 47th
= 1832 – 14th

You also have to consider that he may have been employed by the Barrack Department, and was permanently based in the IOW. And there would have been Royal Artillery batteries there as well.

His record does not appear to have survived in Kew – you can search for surviving records for men discharged before the end of 1854 on the NA catalogue - http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/search.asp, using series = WO (for War Office).

If you can get to Kew you could check the Muster Books for these regiments. I have not come across Musters for the Barrack Department, and you will need to narrow down the RA batteries, or face a long search.

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/militaryhistory/army/step4.htm - assuming he was not an officer.

If you know the town on the IOW I would try and find a baptism record for the daughter in case his regiment/corps is mentioned. Ditto with the marriage. If you know of any more children you should post the years and places of birth.

Thanks very much. I have got a possible birth of a child Mary and it says father in 84th Regiment. I have absolutely no idea what that means and if there are any connection with Ireland where family stories say he was born. The rest of the children were all born in Helston Cornwall where the family lived from then on.I will send for the birth certificate and see if it is the right one.

Hi Nicola

The 84th Regiment were nominally called the York and Lancaster Regiment, but you cannot really take any notice of that before permanent Depots started about 1870. They could have served all over the UK including Ireland, as well as the Empire.

They were in Ireland in 1815, then in 1821 to 1825; Plymouth in 1827; Kilkenny in 1840; Dublin1841; Limerick 1842, and then left for India in April 1842.

Do you have a date for this 84th Regiment reference, plus these Cornish births?

The date I've got is birth cert which I've ordered 1832 Portsmouth of a regimental birth Mary Blake father in 84th Regiment Vol 914 page 3.
All the other children were born in Helston Cornwall from 1834. John Blake only appears on 1841. He died between 41 and 51

Best to wait for certificate. The regiment in the index can often be wrong.

This may not be much help - but I have found a couple of times that the IoW Barracks were used for transit stops  -  so regiments not actually stationed there would "park" as it were,  en route from say Ireland to India.

So if the 84th weren't listed as stationed there, perhaps they were on a stop - over  ???
