Hi :),
I am trying to find the death cert for Sarah Jackson born 31/01/1906 Camlachie.
She emigrated to Montreal on 18/10/1958 on the Empress of Britain but I do not know where to look for her death.
I was also told by family that her daughter Martha Cowley Jackson born 1938 went with her but I could not find any record.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

You would need to know where in Canada Sarah Jackson died in order to determine whether there are any records available. There isn't a central registry in Canada as BMD event registration is a provincial responsibility. In many provinces, deaths after 1958 would be covered by privacy laws to make things even more difficult.

Hi Jacquie
Many thanks for your reply. The only thing I know about Sarah Jackson is that she settled in Vancouver. I did wonder whether it might be too soon to access this information.
Thanks again for your help.

If she died in British Columbia you may have lucked out. British Columbia is one of the exceptions as you can access death registations there up to 1988 through the BC Archives. Here's a link to their website:
http://search.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca/sn-2E64301/gbsearch/Births,Marriages,Deaths
I couldn't see any deaths for a Sarah Jackson that fit the date of birth you mention though.

Do you know when Sarah moved to BC? Did her daughter come with her? Is it possible she remarried in Canada?
Like Jacquie, I couldn't find anything in the BC indexes for either one of them. Another option is to check the online obituaries - there are some that start in 2000 and the two main Vancouver daily papers have an online archive that runs from 2002 to present. There is a gap between 1988 and 2000 and she would have been quite an age but maybe worth a look.
Rootsweb 2000 onwards:

Vancouver Sun/Province 2002 - 2009:

If you can nail down a time frame/address for her in Vancouver, I can try and do some lookups in the City Directories.

Hi Lynwen,
Upon talking to family the only information I have is that Sarah Jackson moved immediately to Vancouver after arriving in Montreal. As far as we know her intention was to live in Vancouver. We did hear a rumour that she either had her own guest house or hotel or maybe she just worked in one.
We also understood Martha went with her and she would have been around 19/20yrs.
I do not think Sarah Jackson would have married but I do not know about Martha.
Any help would be appreciated.

I'll have a look at the City Directories one day this week and see if we get lucky. Did she have a middle name by chance? Sometimes only the initials are listed.
The BC Vital Events index is quite comprehensive so if she isn't listed, she either died somewhere else, died after 1988 or remarried. But let's try and find her when she was still alive and worry about the death later!

Sarah's full name was Sarah Cowley Jackson and her daughter was Martha Cowley Jackson. I have also been been told that Sarah was a cook and Martha was a nurse.
I hope this is of help.
Thanks again
