Title: Trail gone cold
Post by: steveamara on Monday 02 March 09 19:37 GMT (UK)
Willie Cundy was born 5 November 1867 in Moulton, Spalding, Lincolnshire to Harriet Cundy. He appears on the 1871 and 1881 Census as Grandson to the head of household Maria Cundy. I have been unable to find anything after that census - can you please help

Welcome Steve

I think I've found him in 1901 married to Mary E age 26 born Lutton, it gives his age as 30
but has a daughter called Harriet (L) and was born in Whaplode. He's an ag lab and lives at
Long sutton Road , Long Sutton. Think the Ref is RG13/3036 f68 pg 135 (it's difficult to tell the page nos
properly on the G******ist.co.uk)

Hello both   :D

Yes, UKD  -  I found that too, whcih was why I asked whether Helen knew any more about him   :D

Here's the entry:

1901
RG13.  P. 3036  Fol. 68  Pg. 13

Long Sutton Road, Gedney

CUNDY
William  Head  M  35  Ordinary Ag Lab  B.  Lincs  Whaplode
Mary E  Wife  M  26                               B. Lincs. Lulton
Harriet L  Dau  2
Alfred W  Son  2 mths.

both children born Gedney Marsh

I liked the eldest daughter being Harriett  - which obviously struck you, too, UKD   :D  :D

This looks like their marriage :

Q2 1895 Holbeach. Vol 7a  Pg. 844  William Cundy
Maria Elizabeth A Rudley on the page.

I'm afraid I cant see him in 1891   :-\

Hi

This William Cundy's age is actually given as 35 in 1901.  It seems to me that rather than being the same person as Willie b 1867, he's more likely to be the child enumerated in 1871 as William Cundy, 5, b Whaplode - son of Alfred and Sarah E: RG10/3332/23/3.

Hmmm...having said what I said above, there is another William Cundy b Whaplode who gives his age as 26 in 1891 and 35 in 1901 (on both occasions married to a Betsy/Betsey).

1891: RG12/2608/84/7 (Groom & gardener)
1901: RG13/3073/20/11 (Draper's traveller)

So maybe this is the son of Alfred & Sarah, and the other one's Willie? Or vice versa...

Just what I was thinking too. I've double checked the image on the website I use
and the one I listed earlier does say 35 but was transcribed as 30.

Hi Anna   -   there's a William B. 1866 Whaplode on 1891 and 1901  -  married to Betsy - daughter Alice ???

So if the original one, married to Maria (Mary ) E named his son after his father - maybe the one married to Betty is he whom we seek ?

The William born Whaplode is, in 1881, an apprentice baker in Gedney........

SORRY  _  typed and "stuck in the treacle"   :-\

Yes - Gedney's interesting, given that William/Mary E.'s children were born there!

There's also another likely marriage    ???  :o

Q2. 1897 Holbeach  to Mary Elizabeth Hurling   :-\

I think this is going to be a marriage certificate job, unless Helen knows any more about his later family and can sort them out :-\

Thank you everyone - I am going to investigate further and will, as suggested, get some marriage certificates

I have the birth certificate of the Willie Cundy I am looking for. He is an illegitimate son of Harriet Cundy and was born on 5 Nov 1867 in Turnpike, Moulton.

As mentioned before he is shown as grandson on 1891 census by which time his mother had left Lincolnshire and was living in Lancashire

The birth certificate shows his name as Willie although he may at some time decided to be known as William

Bye for now - I'll probably be back again

Hi Roy and Helen,

I was wondering if you have anything on Elsie Annie HURLING b. 2Q1893 in Spalding district.  She married Walter CROSBY in 3Q1910, also in Spalding district.  On the 1911 census she was 'Annie'.

I haven't been able to find her on the 1901 census, and don't have her parents names, so haven't found them either.

My interest is on the CROSBY side, but I'd like to find Elsie/Annie and her parents for completeness.

Best wishes,

Nick
