Hi Sussex Researchers
Today, I had pleasure in visiting St John Sub Castro in Lewes and depositing with them the results of my 5 years work on that Church.
I left with them:
Transcripts of the Burial Register: Over 8000 entries
Book 1 - Sept 4th 1602 - May 1st 1650
July 1st 1652 - Mar 17th 1699
Jul 6th 1700 - Nov 7th 1750
Jul 29th 1751 - Oct 11th 1799
Book 2 - Apr 21st 1800 - Jan 15th 1993 - Cross Referenced with 1851 Census.
All in Alphabetical Name Order
Monuments in Church & Churchyard
A large volume of work - again in Alphabetical order containing every name from the 800 monuments in the Church & Yard (except 11 which were totally illegible) - together with a colour image of each monument.
A copy of the Inscription on each monument will follow at a later date.
This volume has also been checked and is cross referenced with the Burial Registers. A Plan of the church and yard is also available to locate the monuments.
In the very near future, they will also receive:
Baptisms in the Church - Jan 11th 1601 - 30th May 1999
At the last count there were 11404 Baptisms and rising
I understand that the Church is now open on a regular basis for people to visit and possibly do some research.
Dont worry if you cant get to the Church - all this information is available to you right here in the comfort of your own home through Rootschat.com and the Sussex Boards.

Thankyou...ought to have worked that out myself :-\
??? I've just had another dumb thought..
You kindly did a lookup in the 1871 Political Directory for me a while ago. It gives the head of household name and the number of people in the household ie 3.. does this include women and children ? or is it just the number of people eligable to vote ?
Suet
-
Hi Suey
In the introduction to "Lewes in 1871 - A Household and political directory" it says:
"In the next three columns are totalled all the members of the household.
The first includes the householder and all those related to him / her, the second the number of domestics or other servants, and the third all other members, such as boarders, visitors, other employees"
Chris in 1066Land

Hi Chris - thanks for that.. :)
It just occurred to me that as women did'nt have the vote they may not have been included ~

Hi Chris - wonderful work on the burial records v v helpful!! Do you/or is there access to marriage records for the parish? I am interested in parents and or witness to the marriage of John CRIPPS and Mary RICHARDSON that took place at St John Sub Castro in Mar 1831?
Mary is a sticking point as she declared on the 1851 census in Brighton that she was born in Portugal (abt 1813). I am hoping that her marriage may give a nugget of info to trace her family.
I will be eternally grateful for any help you can give me. Thank you!!!
Anne-Marie :)
-
Hi there Anne-Marie
Thanks for the compliments on the St John Sub Castro work.
Unfortunately I have not done any work on the Marriage records of that church, that is scheduld for some time in the future.
The marriage records would be on film at the East Sussex Record Office in Lewes, plus there are transcribed coies of the marriages on the open bookshelf at the end of the record office (limited details though)
As yours has a date of about 1831, then no certificate will be available to you (began 1837) and even the filmed reigister could be of limited use as the content was not standardised till after1837, whilst burials and baptism were entered in a specialist book from 1813 onwards.
Sorry to be so negative

Hi Chris
Sorry for the delay in replying but my computer crashed.
I am very new to this and am grateful for all help and can assure you it is not negative! I live in East Anglia so unable to get to the Lewes office - could I trouble you for whatever info is available for the marriage? I appreciate that there is no certificate and the info not standard but I am hoping for a little luck!
(27 March 1831)
Just a thought do you many Richardson's bap at St John's from 1813 to 1831.
Please advise me of the etiquette - am I asking too much? If I am being cheeky, rude or abusing your help please do tell me.
Thanks
-
Hi Anne-Marie
I have printed off your request for info for the marriage uou require - next time I go to the record office, possibly next week, will look for further details for you.
Checked St John Sub Castro for baptisms for Richardsons - NILL
very unusuals that, either they did not stay in lewes or they changed churches.
There is no etiquette as far as I am concerned about the number of research requests. - Most of the information I have is either contained within my computer on a second hard drive or is in printed format near my computer, so not very difficult to access.
I am happy to share my resources with any genuine researcher.

Hi Chris
Well done Chris what a fantastic thing to do thankyou.
I know in the Church there is a WW1 Memorial Notice Board my Great Uncle's name is on it Jesse Thomas Fry he was killed 12th October 1918, Cambrai, France.
His address at the time was 17, Toronto Terrace, Lewes he was married to Ada Mary May Fry nee Gabb I know he had a child Nellie. J. A Fry born about 1817 I have often wondered did he ever see the child.
What happened to the family after this date I do not know.

Hi Chris
Thankyou for the info Chris this is fantastic news if one day I could have a scan of the memorial that would be great.
If Jesse's brothers or sisters were born Hamsey which I understand is near Lewes which church would that be?
Pauline :D
-
Hi Pauline
Hamsey is on the edge of Lewes:
Kelleys Directory of 1867
HAMSEY is a parish, 2 miles north from Lewes, 10 from Brighton, and 46½ by road from London, in the Eastern division of the county, Barcombe hundred, Lewes rape, county court district, archdeaconry and rural deanery, Chailey union, and diocese of Chichester. The old parish church of St. Peter, standing on a picturesque knoll, has nave, chancel, and square tower; but, in consequence of the inconvenience of its position, a new church has been erected, also named St. Peter's, for the parish of Hamsey, in its hamlet of Offham: the building is in the Early English style, and consists of a nave, double aisles, and chancel: it has a square tower, with shingled spire, and greatly owes its origin to the munificence of the family of the incumbent. The living is a rectory, yearly value £570, with residence, in the gift of, and held by, the Rev. Sir George Croxton Shiffner, Bart., M.A., of Christ Church, Oxford; the Rev. Reynold Harwood is curate. The Cooksbridge station of the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway is in this parish, one mile north-west. The area is 2,761 acres, and the population in 1861 was 541.
OFFHAM is a hamlet, one mile west; NORTH END, one mile north; COMBE, a mile and a half west; HEWIN STREET, 2 miles north
The words 'Hamsey' often appear in the Registers of St John Sub Castro and South Malling
Will send you the pics if you provide e-mail address by personal message

Hi Chris,
You kindly provided me with the burial date and monument photo for Catherine SETFORD, which has given rise to further questions - so what's new!
Her daughter Mary Ann SHAW is named on the headstone, and from that I see she died 3rd July 1937. Would you have her burial date?
Mary Ann married Charles SHAW in 1883 in Barcombe. He was born about 1859 in Lewes, the son of Joseph SHAW and Mary Ann. Might he have been baptised and buried at St. John Sub Castro?
Many thanks, Mandy

Hi again
Monument 545 is a small plaque, made by 'Bridgman' of Lewes, but badly lichen stained.
In Memory
of
Charles Shaw
who died Feb 13th 1929
Aged 69 years

Bridgman Records are in the East Sussex Record Office in the Maltings (just around the corner from the churchyard) - you will be able to view correspondence between Bridgman and who paid for the plaque, when it was erected, how much it cost, etc.

Hi Chris
I am looking for CROSSLAND's in Lewes. I have a baptism at St Michael and baptism and wedding at St Anne's from 1785 - 1802 but think there is one in 1813 as well.
Also Elizabeth ROUTLEDGE b ca 1802 in Lewes. Any help would be appreciated.
Regards, Peter in Melbourne
-
Hi there Peter
Unfortunately I do not have a single Crossland or Routledge in my Database.
You picked the two churches that as yet, I have very little data on - the other 4 (John Sub Castro, Southover, South Malling & All Saints) all figure prominently in the data. (You are talking about the posh end of town)
The two churches I have little data on except this information are:
St Michael-in-Lewes.
This church stands in the busy High Street of Lewes, at the foot of the mound bearing the keep of the Norman Castle, and is distinguished by its slender shingled spire rising from the top of a round flint tower (only two others like it in Sussex). Believed to have been instituted as ‘the church of the castle’, the expression “tanquam matrici ecclesie” (Mother Church) in the 16th century seems to imply that it held a position of seniority in the town. By the time of the Reformation, St Michaels was in a deplorable condition and its fortunes suffered another serious setback during the Puritan revolution as the citizens of the town remained predominantly Dissenters. In 1748 extensive building works were carried out (rebuilding of South Aisle, with two doors onto the street) and from the incumbency of Frederick Teed (1841 – 1863) a number of changes began to be made to the liturgy and furnishings which reflected the catholicising influence of Newman and Pusey. Much of the churches present-day character is thanks to the Rev Edgar Herman Cross (1877 – 1891)
St Anne's
Built outside the Town walls in the 12th century and originally known as St Peters and St Mary Westout, this church is a splendid example of Norman architecture with its small rounded doorway and its solid carved interior columns. The chancel was rebuilt in the 13th century. The 12th century font has some fine old carvings. The church roof dates from the 16th century. In the 12th century the church was home to an anchoress who allowed herself to be walled up in a tiny cell by the chancel wall, with only a small window. Her little cold cell became her coffin.
Sorry to be so negative

Thanks for the effort Chris. Much appreciated. I was in Lewes briefly 2 years ago and had no interest in family history then; much is the pity

Dear Chris
I have just joined roots and coincidentally visited St John sub Castro Lewes yesterday. Especially interesting as an ancestor Peter Guerin Crofts built the present church (and less creditably demolished the previous one). (PGCII's eldest grandchild was Blanche Crofts, she married my great-grandfather Samuel Tristram - they both lie buried at Sompting, where I've just been replanting their graves.)
You say, re photos of memorials and re burial transcriptions etc there, "Dont worry if you cant get to the Church - all this information is available to you right here in the comfort of your own home through Rootschat.com and the Sussex Boards." Being a novice I have been unable to access this, can you please point the way?
I have a fair amount of collateral info about these relatives (including some portraits), so it will be fun to put it all together.
There are a lot of Croftses on the registers of nearby Barcombe village (and one at nearby Hamsey) but I have not been able to establish any connection between those and the St John sub Castro / Malling House / Ringmer & Uckfield / Sompting Abbotts line who are detailed on my family tree. All clues gratefully received.
I am finding it hard to trace the Crofts family prior to Peter Guerin Crofts I's father John. I have plenty of information about the Crofts/Tristram family at Sompting West Sussex but nothing solid prior to John Crofts who married Daniel Le Pla's daughter Ann.
One of the earliest Crofts references I have relates to John Crofts who bought Heene House (near Worthing, West Sussex, previous generation to the family's purchase of nearby Sompting Abbotts), and his father James Crofts Kt was said to have been in the Duke of Albemarle's regiment, but there the trail peters out.
A family portrait of John Crofts I's family was described in a sale catalogue as 'of Saxham Parva, Suffolk', and our Croftses crest at least has 3 bulls heads in common with that on the Saxham Parva website [plus we have the addition of a lion, and a dog on the top - might these indicate the point of departure from the main Saxham Parva line?]. But, I have not been able to trace any direct connection with the Saxham Parva lot who had apparently died out in the C18. Maybe there was a genuine link - or maybe the connection and even the crest was adopted in order to beef up our lot's pedigree! Either way makes a good story but I'd like to find out which...
I hope to be able to put together a pretty thorough story about this Crofts line, as part of the history of the land they owned at Sompting, and will be grateful for any pointers.
Thanks,
Mike

:) Chris, Very impressed with your work on the burials. I am in Aussie and cannot look physically at the books. I am researching the following names. Would it be possible to have a lookup at whatever you can?
The names are: Wicks, Manners, Wood and Page.
Many thanks. Marie

Hi Marie
I will certainly look through the data bases for your Wood, Wicks, Manners & Page ancestors.
Can you give me an indication of the time period I am looking at and also some possible forenames to go with the surnames above - this then helps me to try and group the results into families
Thanks

Hi there Marie
Have had a quick look to see what kind of coverage the database has on the names you require:
St John Sub Castro – Databases start in 1601
Have checked them for
Burials - 1800 – 1993
Baptisms – 1846 – 1993 ((1846 – 1902) + (1903 – 1993))
Manners
Burials – 4 entries (No Tombstones)
Baptism - Nill
Page
Burials – 35 entries (3 Tombstones with Inscriptions)
Baptism – 38 entries + 25 entries = 63 entries
Wicks
Burials – 7 entries (No Tombstones)
Baptisms – 7 entries + 6 entries = 13 entries
Wood
Burials - 22 entries (1 Tombstone with Inscription)
Baptisms – 19 entries + 11 entries = 30 entries

Hi Chris
Many many thanks for your excellent pictures & data. Do you by chance also have the transcriptions of the outdoor graves, or shall I ask the SFHG if they have those?
Best wishes
Mike
-
Hi Mike
To the best of my knowledge, I am 100% sure that SGHG have not done any transcription work in St John Sub Castro except what was done by Bax, Collingham etc years ago. Their transcription work of a few selected stones is freely available in the Barbican House Museum in Lewes.
I will post my transcriptions as soon as I have had dinner

Chris, I would be very grateful if you could help me. My 2xgreat grandmother was CAROLINE PHILLIPS who was baptised at St John Sub Castro in 1824. She married CHARLES STEELE and in 1881 they were living at Abinger Place, Lewes, which is close to the church. Do you have any inscriptions for PHILLIPS or STEELE? My Lewes ancestors also lived on Priory Street, Southover. Do you have any records for St John's, Southover please? Thanks, Ann

Thanks for all this information Chris; I am truly grateful, especially for the photo of my 2xgreat grandparents' gravestone. I couldn't find it when I visited Lewes recently, which was a disappointment after travelling about 200 miles! Your hard work is much appreciated by us Sussex exiles! Thanks again. Ann
-
Hi Rains4
Happy to be able to help you, and even more pleased that the many hours spent in the churchyard were of some use to others.
To find the stone, upon entering the church yard, follow the foot path down to the bottom of the yard where it is a bit overgrown - on your extreme left near the edge of the yard you will find your Steele monument. (there is a track/pathway round the edge of the yard at the bottom that comes within a couple of feet of your monument)

Hello Chris,
Thanks for the directions...next time I visit Lewes I will go and find the stone. I hope you don't mind me asking you something else: do you have any similar records for Southover Church? My mother grew up in that parish, was married there and I believe her parents and at least one grandparent must be buried there. As with St John sub Castro, I couldn't find any readable stones. The surname in this case is BEAUMONT, although there may possibly be STEELE graves too. Thanks. Ann

Hi Chris, or anyone else know can tell me about St John-sub-Castro
I'm a researcher on Anglo-Saxon history at Cambridge University (specifically on Anglo-Saxon charters), and I am very keen to get hold of an image of the monument to Magnus which came from the old church and is now on the East wall. Descriptions I have come across about it sometimes use the term 'Lombardic letters', but one said there were Anglo-Saxon letter-forms, and I'd be really interested to see a picture and decide for myself. (Also although my main area of expertise is manuscripts (I used to work in the manuscripts department at the British Library) and not inscriptions, if anyone would be interested in my opinion I'd be happy to give it...)
I realise that this is not so much a genealogy question as a local history one, and I hope that I don't annoy anyone by posting on this board -- but there is a sort-of family history link because it has been suggested that this Magnus is a relative (brother? son?) of Harold II, something else I would also like to check out. But I think I need a picture before I can really start looking into all these things, so if anyone can help I'd be really very grateful!
Rebecca
-
Hi Rebecca
How about this
Chris in 1066Land
-
Thanks! -- I hadn't realised it was as large as that, I was expecting a rectangular plaque. It gives an excellent impression of the monument as a whole, but I can't see individual letters very well. If you have any closer views of the letters I'd be very interested in seeing them, but I can see that that would be rather harder given the size of the monument. Thanks for your help
Rebecca
-
Hi again
From 'Historic Lewes and its Buildings' - Lewes Town Council Official Guide
"In the aisle wall rests the former chancel arch, with a medieval Lombardic inscription about Prince Magnus, a Danish warrior, who became an anchorite here. A picture of it in William Camdens Brittannia (1586) was the first archaeological illustration in an English printed book"
Chris in 1066Land
PS - I will be in Lewes on Monday next, can take close up pics then (have a 5 million pix camera) if you require.
-
Thanks, that's brilliant! I'll go and have a look at what Camden says -- I hadn't realised he'd reproduced it. Thanks also for the book reference!
Rebecca

Hi Rebecca
Thats OK
Dont forget to tell everyone at Cambridge University how helpful we are here on rootschat - and its totally free
Your initial query was answered in just 4 mins
Sorry, got to blow our trumpet now and again ;D
I personally would be interested in learning more about Magnus and the Inscription
Chris in 1066Land
-
Will do -- I was very impressed by the speed! I'll show my boss Camden's copy, and see what he has to say about it, and then gather what information I can about Magnus. Thanks again!

Saw your note that you were back at Lewes this week. Any chance of looking to see if there is any further information (witnesses etc absolutely anything!!) for the marriage of John Cripps and Mary Richardson 27th March 1831? I would be v v grateful.
Do you by any chance of have any death records of Richardson's at St John Sub Castro?

I've just joined RootsCom, hence a late reply to MikeSompting's posting of 19/7/04 regarding Peter Guerin Crofts II.
He had a daughter Eliza Sarah Crofts who married James Ingram of Ades, Chailey, my great great grandfather. I think that makes us 5th cousins...!
I've recently inherited family tree info so am not totally on top of what I have, but my impression is that you have a fair amount more Crofts info than me, so I certainly would be interested in any Crofts (or collateral) info you have yourself.
On my part, the records I have also run out at John Crofts (ie father of PGC I), with a guess that a forbear was possibly James Crofts of the Duke of Albemarle's regiment, 'a citizen and cordwainer of London', though Heene House is new to me.
The family portrait is mentioned, apparently painted by Zoffany, but I have no more on it than that. The Saxham Parva connection is also new to me, so a reference to that website would be appreciated (though I'll hunt around anyway). I also have a little info on the Le Pla/Law/Markham side.
I'm also interested in finding out more, in fact anything, about the family of his wife Sarah Strudwick.
Regards
-
Hi there
There were some nice monuments to the Croft family, especially Peter G Croft that used to hang on the wall of the old church, but were moved to the new church upon completion in 1839
Outside in the yard are several stone slabs still in situ above the vaults of the old church, all of which are to or connected with the Croft Family.
I have photographs of both the interior and exterior stones if any one wants copies of same - together with full transcription of same.

Many many thanks for your reply to my plea. You have already filled in a lot of missing data from the these burials.
I look forward to receiving the baptisms when you have time.

I know it seems like I am requesting quite a few look ups without being able to do any myself but i do try and help on the Buckinghamshire board especially for Chesham

Hi again Kay
In the Burial Register transcription, a number will appear at the end of the transcription: e.g.
1893 December 26 Simmonds Kate f 59 St Michaels 487
1891 November 11 Simmonds Obadiah m 84 OTP 525
- this is because there is a monument and we have transcribed and photographed that monument and cross referenced it with the burials.
Not knowing what Simmons you are researching, I do not know if there are any surviving monuments to your family
But I guess you will soon tell me if there is ;D

Chris,
I am speechless, with just a quick look at all the info you have just sent me there are LOTS from my line in the baptisms and burials
and yes,
the last two burials are definatly mine. is is possible to get the photograhs of the monuments?
PS I stil have lots to do ttoday as I help with a local 'Riding for the Disabled ' Group, but this will keep me going tonight and tomorrow!
Many Thanks

Hi Kay
Glad to have been of help to you
To make sure I send you the correct picture and transcription, when you have time, can you please jot down their names and date of death
Have a nice day with your riding group
I will be away from my computer all day tomorrow at the University of Sussex - its the last day school of the 'Interpretation and Recording of a Churchyard" course', part of the Archaeology Certificate via the CCE - and I am the tutor, so hope the rain keeps off as we are out and about in the Churchyards of Lewes in the morning and some private tutorials on the final submission in the afternoon
Look forward to your reply

Chris,
I have been gleaning information off of other posts, but I wonder if I could bother you to perform a search for me specifically.
I am very interested in any information, especially people, that is linked with the Poor House that has been in St John Sub Castro since 1634. I have set myself the aim of putting together a timeline for this building, which I am now beginning to regret!
I would appreciate anything you have, in any format - I'm happy to do the trawling! Also, there is absolutely no rush, just as and when, if you have a spare moment.
Thank you in advance for you help.
Regards,
Richard Streeter

Hi there George
First of all, Welcome to Rootschat and especially the Sussex Boards (we think its one of the best boards on here)
Unfortunately your request for information from St John Sub Castro is a bit confusing - the way I read it is that you are asking for the 'PAGE' Burials and Baptisms - is that correct ?
Also, you do not state any date range, are we looking at the 19th /20th centuries or what.
If you can give me some idea as to your earliest forenames and dates, then I will be only too happy to post the information for you
Look forward to hearing from you

Hi Chris.
Many thanks for reply,as regard the Page's I think it will be better if you can if possible give me back as far as you go back to present day then perhaps I can work out when they left Arlington/Hellingly and went to Lewes.I am still stuck on a burial for a Thomas Page of South Malling who was in 1901 Census I found a couple of possibles but am not sure which is which. Also I note on one of your replies about PRO DEO-PROREGE PRO PATRIA 1939-1945 a J.Pasquale on there as this is my wife's maiden name and thought that it was confined to the Essex area.
As you say Chris it is a very good site.Bye the way did you see the article on Chailey 1914 - 1918.it was very good I found all the info on my aunt's husbands family and also a piece on there wedding.Anyway enough for now and look forward to hearing from you.
yours Sincerely
George Page.

Chris: May I ask if you could do a check for me in the Marriage Registers of St. John sub Castro please?
I have a record (given me by a relative) that on 5th November 1820 PHILIP PHILLIPS married EVE ANN LEWER at St. John sub Castro.
Would it be possible for you to confirm the bride's surname as LEWER...or could it have been LOWER?
This couple are my 3xgreat grandparents and I am having trouble tracing LEWERS in Lewes but can find several LOWERS, some with fairly unusual first names which Philip and Eve Ann used for their children. This makes me wonder if her surname has been misread - or whether Lewer and Lower were interchangeable at the time!
Thanks very much.
Ann

Hi Ann
According to the marriage register at St John Sub Castro
Lewes St. John sub Castro, East Sussex,
Date: 5 Nov 1820:
Groom: Philip PHILLIPS, of this parish
Bride: Eve Ann LEWER, of this parish
Married by Banns.

Hi again
I see what you mean.
In 1989 when I transcribed the Baptism Register for Eva, it came up as follows
1803 Jan 9, Lower Edmond, m, James & Fanny
1805 Sep 29, Lower Eve Ann, f, John & Sarah
1813 Oct 17, Lower Charles Michael, m, Robert & Fanny, OTP, Porter
1815 Aug 13, Lower Henry Woolgar, m, Robert & Fanny, OTP, Servant
1835 Jun 14, Lower Louisa, f, d of Henry & Harriet, OTP, Labourer
Incidentalyy Phillip is not in the register for St John Sub Castro

1842 Sep 18, Phillips George, m, son of Philip & Anne, Priory St, Brick Layer
Dont know hoe many of them are yours

Thanks very much for your invaluable help again Chris. So...was she LOWER or LEWER, I wonder? At least it has given me another line of enquiry to pursue. Interesting that she wasn't baptised until 1805 as her gravestone in St John sub Castro churchyard gives her birthdate as 2nd October 1798.
All those Phillips baptisms are mine - you did list them on here for me a while back. Caroline b.1824 was my 2xgreat grandmother.
Eve's husband Philip was baptised at St Thomas, Cliffe in 1800.
Thanks again.

Hi Chris,
I'm new to this forum, though I've been doing FH for about eight years now.
I spotted your amazing efforts with the St John sub Castro records and wonder if you can help me.
I have a STANFORD family who I pick up for definite in 1813 in Newhaven, when a tailor named Frederick and his wife Selina had a child (also Frederick) baptised. I know from the birth certificate of the last child, born in 1838, that Selina's maiden name was MARKWICK.
According to the 1851 census the elder Frederick was born in the parish of All Saints, Lewes.
I have never managed to find either his baptism or Selina's. I think they married in St John sub Castro on 10 Feb 1812, but this only an IGI record and I couldn't find it when I looked at the film some years ago.
I would be very, very grateful for any STANFORD information you can extract from your records, as I am trying to fit the family together. I know there was a George Stanford around at this time who was a builder, and some of the family was non-conformist.
Likewise, if you can tell me anything about Selina MARKWICK I'd be delighted:I have a mass of MARKWICK information (as I descend from another branch of it too), and the family has been extensively researched by several people, but so far Selina seems to have sprung out of thin air.
Yours hopefully,
BeccaK

Hi Ann
Welcome to rootschat. According to the Sussex Marriage Index Frederick Stanford married Eleanor Markwick at St John sub Castro on the date you mention. The witnesses were Mary Markwick and Richd Burfield. I suppose it could be a mistranscription. You would need to look at the original.
The only Selina Markwick on the index marries John Fisher in Uckfield on 11th July 1831.
Chris has not been very active on the board recently as he is busy with other things but he might pick this up as he is still a moderator for the Sussex board.
Andrea
-
I see that in 1841 his wife is Selina but by 1851 it is Mary. They are in Uckfield both times so there is obviously a family link there.
Have you found Selina's death?
Andrea
-
Hi, and thanks for the verification of the marriage: I'm pretty sure that's the same one. The Selina MARKWICK who you have marrying in Uckfield in 1831 had her marriage witnessed by one of Frederick's daughters (Rebecca STANFORD): there was a close connection between these two families: one of Frederick's grandsons married a MARKWICK grand-daughter.
Frederick did remarry, to Mary HARVEY in Brighton about a month before the 1851 census.
I'd still be grateful for STANFORD info from Lewes: I'm pretty sure this is where Frederick was from.
Thanks for your help,
BeccaK
-
I had a loom to see if there were any suitable candidtes for Frederick's parents marrying in Lewes on the SMI
George 28+ carpenter of All Saints Lewes to Sarah Head 25+ Buxted
Licence 28 Jan 1790 Marriage 29 Jan 1790 at Buxted
Thomas to Ann Diplock 23 Aug 1792 at St John Southover, Lewes
There were several females too.
Have you looked at the Sussex Family History group site - www.sfhg.org.uk ? They have a lot of transcripts for sale. There is another site that Kerryb, one of the Sussex rootschatters, often recommends - it has lots of parish records on it but my mind has gone blank about what it is! www.familyhistoryonline.net I think
Andrea
-
Thanks for that, Andrea.
I now have two options for Frederick's parents - George and Sarah, or Edward and Sally (nee Cooper).
I think my next move is contact SFHG and see if I can find Frederick's baptism that way.

All I can say is: GOOD, GOOD, GOOD! What a lot of hard work. Thanks!
A quick request: would you have information on George Peters, born Lewes 1822, and any of his four wives/Partners, Ann Steer, Elizabeth Smith, Elizabeth Read, Catherine "Kate" Tapp?
I thought I'd better add the following: any help with this would be saving my sanity. I am beginning to suspect that there were two George Peters born Lewes 1822. One of them should be my GGGrandfather. I'm praying I haven't got them mixed up, coz then the work I've done so far is beginning to look pretty suspect.
Thanks!.

As you can see your Benjamin lived at 13 Sun Street at the time of his death and his wife Elizabeth is recorded as living at 3 Spring Gardens when she expired in 1914. (not far from the church or each other)
It looks as though they have a monument on their graves No 186 - will post it when I locate it in my database
William, fatherof Benjamin is also listed in 1910 - but no headstone

A quick request: would you have information on George Peters, born Lewes 1822, and any of his four wives/Partners, Ann Steer, Elizabeth Smith, Elizabeth Read, Catherine "Kate" Tapp?
Have had a look through my databases, but at the moment I am not coming up with anything substanial.
Can you give me any further information as to where in Lewes they could possibly be located
Chris in 1066
-
1841 census I've got George with father Edward (born Bolney) and mother Elizabeth at Old Malling
1851?
1861 at Fisher Street Lewes.
1881 South Street.
My GGrandfather George Nye Peters was born 1857, Lewes, married Emily Kate Newell 1881 at Portsea, Hants.
The other children seem to be Charles Philip 1870
Frederick 1867
Martha 1859
Arthur 1874
George J and Edgar 1879
Arabella K 1882
Mabel A 1884
But looking at BMD I think maybe there's two George Peters born in 1822, Lewes, and I may have them muddled together.
George senior sounds a bit of a lad if he really had those four partners, or could this actually be mixing up the name and families?
I believe his date of death is 1896?

Hi Chris1066,
Many thanks for the STANFORD info. The marriage ties in with what I already have - helps to confirm it, but she was definitely Selina, not Eleanor (I think this is one of those cases of difficult handwriting). The baptism is great; it tis in with the age of Frederick in the 1851 census.
Now I have to find the marriage of Edward STANFORD and Sally. Family legend has it that at one point the family was in Alfriston (smuggling brandy) so perhaps I should look there.
thanks again,
Becca

Hi Chris,
I would love to go to Lewes and have a dig for myself, but I live in Bermuda, so it's not too easy.
So, could you please have a look and see what Maginnes baptisms and/or burials there are. I know they lived in St John under Castle. The ones I know of were there between 1790s and 1880s. Maybe they were there before that?
Many thanks,
Stephanie

Hi, are there any Taylors?
specifically looking for David William Taylor & Emily Louisa Taylor but any other Taylors may be relatives!
they lived at 73 Highdown Road, Lewes so would they have been buried here?
-
Hi Toni and Backchat
Chris has just gone off on holiday for a month but I am sure he will get back to you when he is home.
Toni - if you have found your relatives in the census if you look at the top of the page it usually says what parish the road is in. I cannot find Highdown Rd on a current map of Lewes. What dates are you talking about?
Andrea

Highdown road is still there, up past the prison & hospital behind Neville Road
Toni
-
Ah yes, got it now. I must have been looking at the wrong bit of the index! It is quite a way from St John's.
Are they the couple who were living in Mount St Southover in 1901? My gut feeling is that Highdown Rd will be post 1901 - most of the building out there looks much newer as I drive past. When did they live there and more to the point when did they die?
Andrea
-
Hi all!
I have Carters, Leggatts, and a Gorringe in my tree from Sussex some who go back to 1600's. Unfortunately, I haven't yet been able to confirm dates etc. as they're from the LDS which can be very wrong at times. Most of these come from Lewes or surrounding area. Many thanks to Chris for all this info!
-
hi chris is it possible for you to look see if there are any heath and funnells baptisms or burials please there could also be fullers but not sure on that one

Andrea
yes they are the people that were living at Mount St Southover in 1901
They were living there in 1930's for sure and also in 1950
i have no idea when they died but i am sure they are not alive aged 126!
my view of the house from outside is a 1930's house.
they would most probably be buried in the cemetary down Winterbourne but i thought i would ask.
-
I didn't think they might still be alive! It is just that from Chris' point of view if he has an idea of dates it saves him searching hundreds of years in his index and helps to make sure he finds the right ones - often families use the same names in different generations. The more information you give the easier it is for him.
Andrea

JOHN HIDE AND MARY RUSSELL married 12 May 1636.
Also does the register give an address for either of them
.Any details would be gratefully received.

-
Hi there Kesannah
I transcribed the registers back in the 1990,s and that was all of the information that was written down - which was then computerised.
So I therefore believe that no other information was included in the register (95% certain) - but I could be wrong or have missed something.
Chris in 1066
-
Chris,
Thanks for your reply . I was ever hopeful. :D

Hi Chris, welcome back from your recent hols, when you have a moment (in between all that holiday laundry and other folks requests) could you please have a look in your Lewes records for GIBBS.

Hi Suey
Looked at the St John Sub Castro baptism register, but could not spot either Harriet or Henry
These are the only ones between 1601 and 1845 - looks as though they moved into Lewes around 1824 as there is nothing before that date.

Hi Johngirl
Have checked my Lewes Databases for DUFFY - i.e. St John Sub Castro, All Saints, South Malling & Southover - but the name does not crop up as yet.
There is also St Michael, Cliffe and St Annes that I do not have info for - so may be there
Sorry

Thankyou Chris,
I haven`t got a great deal of information on my Duffy ancestors. I only have a marriage for a Frances Duffy who married a William Condon in 1833 at St Nicholas Church Brighton. As you can see I don`t know much about English Parishes and Countys. I live in Australia. Frances Duffy was my GG Grandmothers mother. Ann Condon [alias Duffy] was transported to Tasmania. I`m trying to establish who her father may have been so I`m in search for Duffy`s. Ann according to her convict record was born in Brighton about 1828. Her father may have died so I`m asuming he is buried somewhere near Brighton although Frances may have never been married at all to a Duffy it may have been her birth surname.

Chris,
Thanks for the superb info, I had some sketchy details but this helps enormously. I must pay a visit to the parish and have a look around for myself.
Any suggestions on where I might get some more threads to follow up on especially on the local history of the family, I know one of them was a high sherrif of Sussex at one time and reputed to be one of the richest gents on the south downs for a period but would like to uncover some more detail.
Thanks again

Thankyou Chris,
It says that Frances was a widow so that means she was married at some stage to a Duffy. Will see if I can find a Baptism for Ann ,maybe I will then find out who her father was.

Yes, got to agree with you - but that marraige did not take place here in Sussex (not on SMI) so must be in a neighbouring county - possibly Kent.
Maybe an enquiry on the Kent board might not go amiss

I must get a detailed map of England and start trying to figure out where all the Towns and Countys are.I get confused. ???
Will post on the Kent board as you suggested. :)

Chris:
Could you check to see if there are any Brigman/Briggman/Bridg(e)man surnames??? I'd really appreciate it!
Thanks,
Woman_Hollering
-
Hi there Terri
Without looking, I know that there is a family of Bridgman(s) there because he was a stonemason and carved a lot of the memorials in this churchyard as well as lots of other yards in Sussex.
What variation of the name does your research favour the most
Chris in 1066
-
Hi, Chris:
Oh, yes, I know of whom you refer. It's a bit of a jumble because I strongly suspect that stonemason Bridgman originally spelled his name Brigman or Briggman (or, at least his forebears did). Could you just look at the period prior to 1725 for Brigman or Briggman? That should do me.
Thanks,
Terri
-
Hi Terri
Have checked the following churches in Lewes
St John Sub Castro
Southover
All Saints
South Malling
All yielded a NILL result for Brigman / Briggman prior to 1725
Sorry about that
I do not have databases for St Michaels (Anglo Catholic Church) or St Annes churches in Lewes - there may be some in either of those

Chris:
Thanks for looking!

Hello Chris 1066
I am researching a Tom Mantell from Lewes who was buried at St Johns Sub Castro in February 1928, is there a family tomb in the churchyard or a stained glass window in the Church which I believe Tom Mantell wished to have installed when he died (listed in his will I believe) ?
Many thanks
Sue
-
Hi Sue
Just spotted this on my way out - will give you a proper answer later this evening

Hi again
Sorry, there is not a stained glass window to Tom Mantel - but there is a plaque inside the church which has the following inscription:
CH05
In memory of/ Thomas Austin Mantel/ of this parish/ who died 1st November
1874/ aged 48 years/ also of/ Fanny his wife/ who died 2nd August 1907/ aged 82 years/ also of/ Fanny their daughter/ who died 9th June 1891/ aged 40 years/ and of/ Tom their son/ who died 11th February 1928/ aged 74 years/
Do you want their baptism records and other burial records of relatives / siblings.
I have transcribed all registers and have the details on my computer
Chris in 1066
-
Hi again
Also in the churchyard of St John Sub Castro there is a memorial over their last resting place inscribed as listed below:
296-
"In the Midst of Life we are in Death"
In Memory Of/ Thomas Mantell/ Who Died December 1st 1874/ Aged 48 Years/ Also of Fanny His Daughter/ Who Departed This Life June 9 1891/ Aged 40 Years/ Also of Fanny Mantell/ Wife and Mother Of The Above/ Who After Over 9 Years Of suffering / Patiently Borne/ Departed This Life On August 2nd 1907/ In Her 82 Year/ Also Of Tom Mantell/ Son Of Thomas And Fanny Mantell/ Who Died February 11th 1928/ In The 75th Year Of His Age/
And the tombstone - not as grand as the one in the church is shown below
Hope that helps you
Chris in 1066

Hi Chris
Thank you so much for the pictures and details of the Mantells, its nice to start to get to know them as my Great Grandmother was Tom's housekeeper at 161 High St Lewes for about 30 years until he died
I am finding out lots about his history as an athlete especially running and winning lots of trophies of which he left some to the Lewes Corporation back in 1928 ( I wonder what happened to them ? )
I visited Lewes records office for the first time two weeks ago, so will definitely return again to visit the church and enjoy the lovely town
Regards
Sue
-
Hi Chris
You previously mentioned you have the records for Tom Mantell concerning his baptism plus his relatives and any siblings at St Johns Sub Castro, if you could possibly send these to me too that would be great

HI Chris, I'm new to the site and am really impressed with the work you are doing. I hope that you might be able to help me find out more about my Lewes roots. I have back tracked to William Simmons who married Jemima Harding at St John's in Lewes, on April 6th 1815, I think that his father was Samuel Simmons and her father was John Harding but I have no other details. Can you help?
Many thanks, Margaret
-
Hi Margaret
First of all welcome to Rootschat and especially the Sussex Boards - one of the best; and thank you for all those nice compliments.
You just mentioned St John - is that St John Sub Castro or St John the Baptist - both are in Lewes.
I notice that William & Jemima married by license:
Extract from the Sussex Marriage Index:
Archdeaconry of Lewes Marriage Licence, Date: 6 Apr 1815:
Groom: William SIMMONS, bachelor, 20, with consent of father Samuel of the same parish.
Bride: Jemima HARDING, spinster, 18 S.John Sub Castro
Extra Information: SIMMONS Saml. labr All Saints
Marriage
Location: Lewes St. John sub Castro, East Sussex, Date: 6 Apr 1815:
Groom: William SIMMONS, with consent of father Samuel.
Bride: Jemima HARDING, with consent of father John, both of this parish
This seems to indicate it is Sub Castro, but there is a mention of All Saints in Lewes
Chris in 1066
-
Hi again Margaret
I have just checked the Baptism Registers for St John Sub Castro between 1601 and 1902 and there is not one single entry for the surname Harding.
Checking the same time period for the surname Simmons or variants (with or without a 'd') there are some 40 entries - but not one with the name Samuel and there are no entries to William & Jemima either.
This leads me to suspect that they were not originally from Lewes
Have you any further thoughts on this
Chris in 1066

Hi Chris in 1066
Once again many thanks for the details on the Mantells, your work on this is much appreciated and will be a great help with my research :)

-
Hi Chris, brilliant work !
I have relatives linked to St John sub Castro Lewes. How can I access the information ?
-
Hi Facellia
I spent several years surveying, transcribing, photographing and re-checking the data in St John Sub Castro back in the 1990's - therefore all the info is stored on my computer.
I also transcribed the Baptism Registers as well as the Burial Registers and all the data was fed into an excell document.
So, just tell me what you are looking for and I will post details asap
I also did the same with All Saints in Lewes as well as St John the Baptist in Southover and St Michael in South Malling - all of course in Lewes.
I await you command

Hi Chris,
Thank you very much for all the info.
I can see at a quick glance several are from my family, brill !
Are you covering other parts of Sussex,eg West Sussex in your research ?
Facellia.
-
Hi Facellia
Glad that you found all the info of use, but unfortunately Lewes and Hastings both in East Sussex give me enough to do, and, as well as looking after the Sussex Boards on this forum, I get several enquiries a day from my 1066Genealogy web site.(address at bottom of message)
So think I will stick with what I have got at the moment
But glad to have been of assistance to you
Chris in 1066

Hi Chris,
Thats fine, I appreciate all the info you kindly sent me & will look into it all later.
Several of the people you listed are direct relatives of mine, through my mothers family
Many thanks. Facellia.

Hi Facellia,
Not sure what is happening ??? Are you getting his PM`s or just his messages from this post. You may have to contact the moderators and ask them whats happening.
You may need a holiday after you sort this all out ;D

Hi had 2 from another person & yours only, bit odd ?

Hi all but Facellia in particular
This thread was originally started by Chrisin1066land and he offers to do look ups for people in Lewes. All replies are therefore relevant to him. Facellia - you joined the thread to ask him a question and therefore you see all the other posts which are aimed at him, not at you. Once you have joined any thread you get notifications of all other posts made to it - regardless of whether they apply to you. You just ignore them if they are not relevant. Hope that makes the position clearer.
Ballagh -It might be best if you start your own thread on the Sussex Look Up Request board for your Bish family. Chris is away so cannot help but there will be others who can help but who will not see your query on this thread.
Regards
Andrea

Chris just to say wat a great help u r to all of us on info for Lewes
-
Sharon
First of all thank you for those compliments - it is nice to know that ones efforts are appreciated; but I love helping others research, so its no hardship at all.
All the info you want is in the East Sussex Record Office at the Maltings in Lewes - which by chance is virtually just across the road from St John Sub Castro and its Churchyard.
Yes, I would book a seat for Monday and then whilst there book up for the rest of the week as is necessary. You can book a chair with an electric point for your computer so that you can tap it all in as you find it.
When you arrive on Monday, let the staff know what kind of records you want to look at, as a lot of records are not kept on site - they have to get them in which usually takes a couple of days.
Hope that helps

I have just looked at several other Church Burials in Lewes - i.e. St John Baptist Southover, St Michael South Malling, All Saints - none of them have any BISH burials - so it looks as though they stuck around the St John Sub Castro area. That should shorten your search in the Church Registers

Hi Chris,
After rereading some info on Webb ancestors I realised that there might hopefully be one or two in Lewes.
In particular I am looking for Rose Ann Webb died 1936 and maybe her husband George Thomas Webb d 1948.
Of course any other Webbs may well be relevant so any info you have would be welcome.
regards
Sean

As you can see from the transcription of the slab on the grave, there should be anything up to 4 people in this grave - Actually it is a brick lined Vault with only 1 Lead Coffin in it..
I know this because that piece of broken stone in the bottom right hand corner of the vault is easily removed and you can see inside the vault - revealing only 1 lead coffin sitting on some metal brackests, but there are other metal brackets with nothing on them.
Wonder if this was the scene of a Grave Robbers crime in the late 1700's ?

Thank you very much Chris! Very much appreciated. ;D
-
Hi Chris,
Thank you very much for your help -you are brilliant! Within 24 hours you provided me with some death dates of the TAYLOR family in Lewes. It only took a little deduction for me to be 99.9% sure I had found my 4 x gt grandfather & his father before him. So, if anyone else is looking for them, they are:- Thomas Tailler glazier married to Ann Astin (previous generations Astenn & Austen)on 5.9.1706, children John Tailer born 1710 St Thomas in the Cliffe died 1755 & Susanah born 1717 died 1719. John was also a glazier & the reason I'm confident that they are the Taylor's I'm looking for is the names of John's children-Ann, Susannah, Thomas etc.
Thank you once again.
Oh, could I ask you to check another detail for me please. Their daughter Lucy (Thompson) born 1748 died 1826-can you find her death date & burial place please? I know her children were born in East Hoathly. Hope you don't mind me asking-you have done so much already.

Many thanks Chris,
I will try to see if any of these names fit with the info I have. Your assistance is most appreciated.
-
Hi Chris,
You very kindly helped me with my Taylor family-could I ask you now to help with my Austen family?
I have Stephen Austen (Austin on the igi) married at St Thomas to Elizabeth Broome in 1626, their 2 sons William Austen 1633 & Richard Austin 1637 were both baptised at St Johns. William married Ann Colman (shown as Willuam Astenn). Any info-baptisms, deaths or marriages of any other Austens at St John's would be most appreciated.
-
Chris!
Apologies! I must have had a 'senior' moment! (another one!) My Austen's weren't baptised at St John's but at All Saints! I did find some Austen's at St John's but don't know if they're connected to me.
I saw what I presume is your connection to Maythorne Mill-I know it well being a Notts lass & having family who live in Southwell-lovely place.
-
Hi again
Before I got your last message I had trawled through the Baptisms and the Burials at St John Sub castro and was unable to locate any of them - so assumed you had made a 'typo' and they were elswhere in Lewes.
Sorry, but i do not have the baptisms for All Saints - but listed below are all the Austen Burials within its church and yard
1601 May 2 Austen Edwarde m
1639 May 4 Austen Elizabeth f
1746 June 8 Austin Elizabeth
1758 July 1 Austin St Thomas Cliffe
1778 July 5 Austin Elizabeth 43
I seem to have lost a file as I have no burials between 1679 and 1738 - sorry about that.
Yes, we were at Maythorne Mill for about 60 years between 1851 and 1910 = I have visited the mill several times, even took the trailer and stayed there for a week - I love the place; I feel comfortable when I am there - must be my ancestors watching over me.

Just seen the memorial message - glad I didn't miss that.
Thanks so much for posting that. I may well head over to Lewes today to see that in person.
-
Hi Bertee
Glad to have been of help.
As you enter the churchyard through the side gate, this memorial stone is just on your right about 3 or 4 rows in and not far from the gate.
The inscription is very poor, so you will have to look hard to see it.
Best of Luck

hallo chris...i went to st john sub castro today to try and find my great-grandfather's grave but no luck...could you do a look up for me please? his name was george blight and he died in lewes 11/11/1961 (my dad, his grandson, was a choirboy at this church in 1950's and it was their local place of worship)...many thanks in anticipation...louise
-
Hi luellalotts
Welcome to Rootchat and especially the Sussex Boards, one of the best.
Do you know if your grt grt grandfather had any rellies buried in the Sub Castro Yard ? If he did not, its odds on that he is in the main cemetery in Lewes as the smaller churchyards were getting full and they only buried existing family members to those already interred.
I will have a look at the burial Register to see if I can locate any
Chris in 1066
-
Hi again
have just checked the burial register for sub Castro between 1800 and 1993 and there is not a single person with the name BLIGHT entered in it.
Sorry, but he must be buried elsewhere as suggested in my earlier post
Once again, Sorry
Chris in 1066
-
Hi Luellalotts
Have just checked the baptism registers for St John Sub Castro between 1601 and 1993, but the name Blight does not appear at all.
Are you sure you have the correct church ?
Sorry I cant locate any information for you
Chris in 1066
-
dear lovely chris...thank you sooo much for looking but george is proving hard to find as i suspected...i have actually already tried lewes records office/all other churches in lewes/brighton & hove records...just thought i'd try to see if he'd been missed on their records...i even tried the funeral directors in lewes in 1961 (as his body would have to have been moved to storage until service)but all their records were destroyed in the floods of 2000!
thanks again for looking and getting back to me so quickly...i shall try funeral directors in his home county of cornwall to see if he had requested to 'go home' (already tried cornwall records office who say 'nothing' but i'm stubborn and aside from his body being donated to science, he can't have just disappeared!)
take care x

Hi again
Below should be a picture of the monument in St John Sub Castro
Hope this meets with your approval
NB. It is hardly noticeable, but it has suffered some wind damage with the trees bashing the top of it in windy weather and breaking part of it off
Chris in 1066
see www.publicsculpturesofsussex.co.uk for a more detailed description of the monument

Many thanks Chris. I appreciate the amount of effort that must have gone into the original transcription.
Martin

Hi Again
Sometime ago I was sent this old postcard of the Monument (on the right) in the yard of St John Sub castro - date unknown
Having transcribed all those stones in the churchyard (766 in all) I was able to give it an approx date of between 1882 and 1912.
I wish the yard was as well kept today as it was then
Incidentally, the stonemason of the Russian Monument was J STRONG - the very nice monument bottom left of the picture is the Stong family Tomb including John Strong who died in 1903. ( 6 interments in all)

Hello All,
Just a quick note for Sussex/Lewes enthusiasts: the Crimean War Lewes prisoners memorial at St Johns is being rededicated on this Saturday 28th September at 12 noon, after restoration paid for by Finnish and Russian embassies and contribution by Aland islanders.
It's a public ceremony I believe...
And note another connection - Serjeant Richard Davis 11th Hussars, who was wounded in the famous charge at Balaklava is buried not 50 yards away. His grave sadly overgrown, but if I get time in the next couple of days, I'll clear some of the overgrowth away... Many thanks to Chris1066 for mentioning the grave site to me many years ago. It'd be nice to see it restored, which I am hoping to prompt one day!
Roy
-
Hi Roy
Nice to hear from you again
When was you thinking of clearing the area around that tombstone - I know its sometime before Saturday, but can you give a more precise time and I will see if I can join you - two pairs of hands work quicker than one. No sure about the Saturday service, but would like to be there.

Hi Chris,
Please can you check for me if my ancestors have headstones in the churchyard of St John Sub Castro. There are three entries for Wells on your 1066 Genealogy website, so fingers crossed.
Hannah Wells was buried there on 12th July 1870.
Ann Wells was buried there on 14th March 1871.
Daniel Wells was buried there on 4th October 1871.
Many thanks.

Hi Chris,
I've just been looking back at some of the replies and I see that MattD30 asked about Hannah & Daniel and your reply #255 answers some of my query. I doubt that Ann has a headstone but would be grateful if you could check for me. Thanks.

Hi there
Did you mean the following:
1871 March 14 Wells Ann f Union 42
Did you notice the word union, short for Union Workhouse
Therefore no headstone or marker of any kind
Sorry

Yes, that's the one. Thanks for the explanation and for looking it up for me.

Hi Chris
I'd be grateful if you could tell me if you have any information on the Davis' and Bridg(e)mans
I know my great great grandfather, Charles Davis was buried there in 1887.
Also 3x great grandmother Mary Ann Davis in 1868
Do they have headstones?
I'm also particularly interested in Caroline Emma Davis, died 1908. Wife of Charles
Their son Alfred John Davis. Year of death not known and his wife Annie Margaret, died 1928
As for the Bridgman's, as it's a less common name I'm interested in any buried there
I know William was in 1876. My 3x great grandfather. He was pulled alive as a child from the 1836 Lewes Avalanche. His sister and step mother both unfortunately perished. They were buried at South Malling along with the other victims
William's wife was a Susannah, died 1909
Thanks, Peter

Thanks for the prompt and very helpful reply Chris
I'm slowly going through all of it
I know John Davis, the husband of Mary Ann, died 1868, also died in the Cliffe Workhouse and was buried at the St Thomas a Becket church 2 years earlier in 1866
I have found them on the 1851 census and they were both from the west country. John from Ivybridge, Devon and Mary Ann from Wells, Somerset. So the early Davis baptisms aren't from my family, but all the ones from 1877 onwards are. So many thanks
As for the Davis burials does Caroline have a headstone? I'm fairly certain this is the wife of Charles Davis 39 OTP, buried 1887. Her maiden name Bridgman and daughter of William
Thanks for the photos of his, his wife's and their infant son's headstone and inscription
Alfred Bridgman was my 2nd great grand uncle and Julia was his wife
As for Leslie Archibald. I have an infant of that name in my tree. A grandson of Alfred and Julia. He was born and died in the June of 1916. So maybe 1913 is wrong?
Thanks again for all of your help
-
Hi Peter
As regard Caroline: I wouldn't expect anyone who died in the Workhouse or Infirmary to have a headstone - sorry, Caroline does not have one.
As regards Leslie Archibald - this is what we transcribed off the headstone, but his burial is not recorded in the Register

Thanks Chris
The inscription fits with the Leslie Archibald Bridgman I have apart from the year
The parents of the Leslie Archibald I have were Archibald Reuben Bridgman and Olive Bridgman nee Pooley
Olive was from Cornwall and they must have returned as Archibald died there
I don't have Leslie's birth or death certificate but BMD index has him being born and dying in 1916
btw Are the Bridgman graves easy to find? As I intend to visit in the next couple of weeks
Do you know roughly where the graves are within the graveyard?
Peter

Hi Peter
I have double checked both the Baptism Register and the Burial Register for 1903 - 1906, and Leslie is not in either - strange.
Looking at the number pad on my keyboard, I notice that the 3 is directly under the 6, so its possible the wrong key was struck when entering the data.
As all the work was done in the late 90's and early 2000's I do not have access to my original work as it is in Lewes together with our original plan - but I do have a rough plan if I can find it. (I know exactly where the stones are after recording them) and copy it for you

-
Hi Chris
A copy of where the stones are would be most useful.
Going back to the Davis stones. Having done some research on Richard & Louisa, Richard is originally from Mickleham in Surrey and doesn't appear to be related to my Davis family
Athelstan I can only find a death record for and again looks unlikely to be related
Peter

HI Peter
The memorial to Athelstan does not give any further clues either

Hi again Chris
Athelstan is a bit of a mystery
I visited the graveyard recently and managed to find the grave of William, his wife Susannah and their infant son as it is now
It's very hard to read the inscription, but I could just about make it out
The grave is in the bottom left hand corner of the graveyard
I was unable to find the grave of Alfred and Julia Bridgman
Do you know whereabouts it is in respect to Alfred's parents grave? As I am planning another visit
Many thanks
Pete
-
Hi again
Their stone is No 287.
It is on the bottom left hand side. The big monument (Russian Memorial) is No 200 and it 7 further rows towards the bottom left. You know where 354 is, do you should be able to spot the stone

The inscription of the surround is as follows
287-
West: In loving memory of/
South: Julia, the beloved wife of Alfred Bridgman/ died April 12th 1923 aged
66 years/
East: Eternal ...(rest buried)
North: Also of Alfred Richard Bridgman/ died December 30th 1926, aged 69
years/

As you are researching Bridgman, Have you as yet made any connection to the Stonemasons firm of Bridgmans of Lewes - a firm I researched for a History Paper at Sussex Uni
Chris in 1066
-
Hi Chris,
Yes, I'm aware of the Bridgmans Stonemasons firm of Lewes.
William was a stonemason and an apprentice there when it was called Parsons.
His son Charles Frederick later became the Master Mason and owner of the firm
He was a 2nd great grand uncle
I found the attached sign on the internet
Also a history of the firm here -
http://tombstones.webs.com/astonemasonoflewes.htm
Thanks for the information about the grave of Alfred & Julia
I'm sure I'll find it on my next visit
Pete
-
Hi Pete
Well, would you believe it, That is my site you found - its even got a picture of me on it.
I am glad you found a connection to the stonemasons, I have lots of info and pictures of same if you want copies of them - private message me your e-mail address

Picture is of the Houses owned by Bridgman and bottom right is entrance to yard

I did wonder if it might have been your site Chris, after you said you'd researched the company
I will send a pm

Hi Chris
I am hoping you may be able to answer this query for me.
I have found two marriages for Robert Burdett both on the 29 January 1809. One to Elizabeth Lowes at St Peter & St Mary, Lewes, Sussex and the second to Elizabeth Lower at St Anne's, Lewes, Sussex.
Is it possible that Elizabeth Lowes/Lower is the same person and the two churches the marriages took place was actually the same church.
Regards
Pauline
-
There is only one marriage on the Sussex Marriage Index. Robert Burdett, private Notts militia, to Elizabeth Lower on Jan 29 1809 at St Annes by Banns.
As far as I know there isn't a St Peter & St Mary church in Lewes but Chris will know more I am sure.

Hello there
I was wondering if you recorded any burials of "Gertrude Wares" nee Potter. 1928 year she died.
I went around the graveyard today and found a S.Potter maybe related to her.
But couldnt find anything
