Now lets try to explain this a little better
I am descended from a HEDGES family who lived for a while in Chatham and was contacted recently by a lady in Australia. She is the granddaughter of Henry HEDGES and Margaret BOSWELL it is for her that I am trying to find out about her BOSWELL line. I only know that her Henry HEDGES was born and lived in Chatham.
I am  sure the marriage was in Chatham as it was registered in Medway. I can ask the Lady for the exact details but this will take some time. I know it's not much to go on, but I don't thing she knows much more.
Thanks Jenny

It might be posting a link to this thread on The Travelling People board.

There are people researching BOSWELLS who may be able to help.

PaulineJ I didn't answer that very well. Yes they were living in Chatham in 1914 at the time of their marriage. I have no idea where John BOSWELL was from. ;D

bearkat I thought this was the Travelling People board

Hi everyone,
I've just read about the Hedges family. I believe Henry Hedges, married in 1914 to Margaret Boswell,
is related to me. They had quite a large family, although several babies died at birth. I would be
grateful if anyone else knows of this family. They lived in the Medway area UK.
Joyce.

not sure if this is any help but found a family called boswell in
1901 Census chatham St Paul  Medway kent
John Boswell  54 b 1847 Northampton, Northamptonshire, England
Margaret Boswell 64 b 1837 Strood, Kent ( wife)

John it says on Census was a Shoemaker  and something about Navy men/man private royal marines ?

The only other I could find was this
1901 census Barking St Margaret  Essex
margaret Boswell  6 b 1895 grandaughter born barking
David Boswell 63 b 1838 Whitechapel, London
Eleanor Boswell 28 b 1873 Stepney london daughter of David
Davis is listed as a cabinet maker

Hi Everyone

Popping over from the "Hedges' Thread... ;D

Just a thought .....

I am wondering if Margaret isn't the daughter of Ellen/Eleanor and John is a 'fictious' father ::)

Following on from Tiggi's find in 1901

We find David Boswell (1838)  married to Margaret :

1871= St George in The East, London
78 Sutton st
 David Boswell 35
Margaret  37
Ellen  3
David W  2

1881 =   St John Hackney
23 Clarence Rd
David Boswell 36  age ??  ::)
Margaret 35  age ??  ::)
Ellen  13
David  12

1891 = Barking, Essex
David Boswell 40  ...they never seem to age  ;D
Margaret 36
Ellen  20
John May 26  ...born Hackney

1901 ...see Tiggi's post

1911
Romford Essex
in The same household as Margaret Boswell b 1893
David Boswell b 1838
Ellen Boswell b 1869

so I wonder if this is Margaret's Birth Registration
Margaret Ellen Boswell ...Middle name = Mother's name?
Jun q 1895 - Romford, Essex
Vol 4a pg 446

Maybe JOHN May of the 1891 census is her dad?

deb :)

oops ... added ... Just seen Tiggi's marriage Margaret has middle intial "M" ..so can't be Margaret Ellen  :-[ :-[

Boswell gypsy/travellers on earlier censuses...a few Johns listed....wonder if perhaps the birth might not have been listed if they were travelling...

and here, Levis Bosswell, a gypsy leader, was a horse dealer

Here a Lazarus & an Alfred are horse dealers ( use scroll at bottom)

apparently "Boss'll" was synonymous with "gypsy"

Looked for M* M* B*l and didn't see a  M__ Margaret  or Margaret M____ although she might have been given the middle name if/when christened....and if Margaret was her middle name but used most often, then also a toughie....

Was hoping the names of her children might leave a clue...prolific family
They had a dozen children all told, starting with twins!
Daisy & Violet, John, George,  Rose A. E., Arthur, William H.,  Ellen L., Margaret M, A.,  Percy A., Joyce V., George T.,

In 1901 there is a John Boswell, age 33 , Lancashire, Much Hoole with occupation down as "Travelling Gipsies"
also one age 33 in Walworth London / St John occ: Horsekeeper
One age 50  Llandysilio /Travelling In Caravan...likely the one from above in 1861
but can't see intothe actual census images...anyone of interest?

hi

The only info I have re Henry Hedges Carter and Margaret Boswell is as follows

B1891Q4 as "Carter, Henry Hedges" Medway 2a/087 M1914Q3 Medway 2a/1725; No 140 Labourer, H M Dockyard Chatham Private, Transport 16th Bat: Middlesex Regiment H0877 or 40877 demobilized 19 April 1919 at Crystal Palace.

The only Margaret Boswell born in the appropriate range was Margaret Ann Boswell born Q3 1891 in Manchester (Lancashire) 8d/301 The only Margaret Boswell in the 1901 Census was aged 9 and lived Salford, Lancashire. Father Terrance Boswell was a brick-layer! -------------------------------Married Medway Q3 1914 as Margaret Marion with father as "John Boswell, Horse Dealer" Death Medway 1935 No 289 as Margaret Annie Could this William Alfred Boswell born 1854Q4 Medway 2a/269 be related?

Hope it helps.

My nan is Margaret Boswells niece- Ivy Giddins now Goulden

Back to the original posting...There is mention of an adoption of a baby from a Boswell mother...who worked for a Carter family.  Intriguing enough to mention & post the url, methinks.

Has anyone checked the 1921 census to see where Margaret Hedges /nee Boswell was born? Still am wondering if she was from a prominent family/group of travellers, as her burial ritual gathered quite the crowd!
Also still so very sad for the woman who bore 12 babies, saw so few survive...and then died trying to deliver her 13th.
