Although I have been researching for a while I am new to the Co. Durham area and would appreciate any advice about the above. I have traced them through the census records and feel pretty confident that I have the families in reasonable order. The McKeag family appeared in Quarrington between 1892 and 1895. The Mohon family were in the Coxhoe/Cornforth area from the early 1800s.
Now I need to try and find parish records relating to the families. Can anyone give me advice of where to look? I will maybe need to try and research Roman Catholic and C of E records as I am not sure if the families were C of E or RC and, apart from going to Durham Records Office, I don't know where to start.
When I looked at the Durham Records Office website I read that I can only request 3 items and need to book workspace well in advance. If this is correct, I need to be sure of what I need to look at well before I get there. Hence the plea for help!

Have you done any searching on the IGI pilot site for Durham Bishops' Transcripts?

Only indexed by parish not names, but well worth trawling through them if you can't get to the records office

I cannot help you much with the McKeags but here are a few parish record items for you to look at:
Baptisms Kelloe St. Helen:
Elizaabeth Mohun, Tyrsdale 11 June 1897 d/o Thomas and Catherine
George Mohun 1 April 1838 s/o Nicholas and Jane (see burials)
John Mohan 14 July 1833 s/o Nicholas and Jane
Isabella Mohun Christmas Day 1835 d/o Nicholas and Jane
George William Mohon bapt 11 Sept 1864 s/o Robert and Mary Ann
Matthew Mohon 30 Aug 1867 s/o Robert and Mary Ann
The Bishop transcripts will give you the mother's maiden name but my index does not.
Baptisms Bishop Middleham St Michael:
George Mohan 23 Feb 1836 s/o George and Hannah
Jane Mohan 18 May 1830 d/o George and Hannah
Matthew Mohan7 Feb 1833 s/o George and Hannah
John Mohun 20 Nov 1831 s/o George and Hannah
Marriages in Kelloe:
George Mohun and Jane Coats 22 Nov 1793
Mary Mohun and Robert Coussons 29 Apr 1829-not sure if 9th or 29th
Nicholas Mohun and Jane Burn 28 May 1833
George Mohun, son of George, and Eleanor Manners, d/o John 17 Feb 1845, George was previously married
John Mohon, age 22, son of Nicholas, and Elizabeth Bulmer, 22, d/o Stephen 1 Jan 1856
Burials Kelloe:
Jane Mohan, age 25, Coxhoe 1 Apr 1838
George Mohun, infant, Blackgate, 18 Aug 1838
Burials Bishop Middleham:
Hannah Mohan, age 29, Cornforth, 15 July 1837
Coxhoe and Cornforth are two villages next to each other. Cornforth was in the Bishop M area and Coxhoe used Kelloe, however in my family they went back and forth for what ever reason, didn't matter where they lived between the two places.
Just book a reader at the record office, don't worry about table space. You need a reader-- tell them you want it all day. There's a cafeteria for lunch.

Hi Heatha,
The information from Durham Records Office about only allowing 3 items and booking workspace well in advance only applies to documents from the archives. If you want to look at Parish Registers you only need book a microfilm reader and can then look at as many as you wish
UPDATE - Sorry I have noticed Janis has already covered this!
Good luck

I am not sure how the last name Maughan is pronounced in the area but if it sounds like Mohan you might pay attention to that name if you see it in the records.

Thanks, Barbara, Janis and Gina.
The advice is all useful and the information invaluable. It will be April before I can get to the records office but I will keep myself occupied meanwhile.
I did visit Coxhoe and Cornforth last weekend so I have an idea of the geography. I like to have an image in my head of the area I am researching so I can "see" where I am going. I have a good visual memory and can now look at maps and see the modern locations in my head, which helps me tremendously. It may sound strange but it works for me.
Thanks again.
Kind regards,
Heatha.
P.S. Hartlepool is next on the agenda !!

As you get into Cornforth, after going under the trestle to the right is a "Carr's Hotel" that was owned by one of my relatives.

I have recorded all the deaths at Quarrington Hill st Paul's up to 1950 and it is available from me as a file or I can just look up your family and post it here.

Thank you for the offer - I have sent a message with my email address included. Heatha

HELLO
my first post here :) Carrs Hotel and several in the area was also owned by my Great Uncle Bill (Richardson so maybe the same one?)
I live in Cornforth and went to school with a boy whose surname is Mahon (pronounced hereabouts as 'Marn') so maybe this is the same family just with a variation in spelling as they are a Cornforth family
cheers

Thank you.
The first, second and third are definitely Mohons from the tree I am researching. They all descends from a family who were started by the marriage of Jane Coats to George Mohon at Kelloe in 1793 and they all lived in Cornforth after the marriage. I'm rather stuck as to where to look next for Jane and George's parents.
Kind regards,
Heatha

Hi
I married a girl named Mckeag who's father came from Coxhoe, Co;Durham. Sadly my wife died about 11 years ago but i know the family quite well. The spelling of Mohon is quite right. His name was Robert (Bob) and he was a jobbing Builder. he has a daughter who will still be alive. her name is Nancy Mohon.
There were two brothers Joe Mckeag, who resided in Back Coronation Terrace, at the bottom of Coxhoe. the other brother was William Mckeag, my father in law.
William Mckeag moved from Coxhoe to Metal Bridge then Later to Spennymoor. William had Three daughters and two Sons.
If you require any other info regarding the above, i will be very pleased to oblige

Hello,
Thanks for your reply. Yes, it is Nancy's family that I am researching and I would like to exchange more details.
Regards,
Heatha

HI again
I can assure that all the families you are researching are Church of England. Nancy's Mohon mothers maiden name was Wall. My mother in law wife of William Mckeag
was her sister.
By the way, i also live in North Yorkshire

Hello again,
I think there must have been two Nancy Mohons !
I am assuming that the lady you are referring to is Jane Elizabeth Wall, who is in the tree I am researching. She married William McKeag in 1926 if I am right.
-
I don't think these are my Mohun's because they all came from Stockton, but in Stockton's PR's they were Moughn, just to give you another name variation ;D (and I too am in N Yorks ;D ;D)
