Hi
I don't usually venture to the Lancashire board, I have never had reason to!!!! Until now.........
A distant relation of mine has provided me with some details of two possible "family members" (he found them listed in the family bible), as follows:
Martha Jane Challinor
Birth Date: 9 Nov 1874
Christening Date: 15 Nov 1875 Hale, Lancashire, England
Father: Richard Challinor
Mother: Jane
Charles Frederick Challinor
Birth Date: 12 May 1876
Christening Date: 24 Dec 1876 Hale, Lancashire, England
Father: Richard Challinor
Mother: Jane
There were many variations of the Challinor name - Challiner/Challenor/Challoner
I would like to find out the mother's maiden name, which would definitely confirm that these two are indeed mine. I know that I could purchase the birth certificates but I'm just trying to save myself £14!! What I find odd is that my Richard and Jane Challinor had all their children in Newtown, Montgomeryshire but I have no idea about a Lancashire connection. Interestingly, I have found their deaths in Newtown in 1880, but of course I want to be sure.
If anyone can help me I would be most grateful.
Thank you very much,
Jan

Hi Jan,
I realise that this is no help at all in finding the mother's maiden name, and forgive me if you already have these details, but a search on freebmd gives Martha Jane CHALLIONER registered in the district of Birkenhead, Cheshire Dec 1874. A search for Martha Jane on the Cheshirefmd site has the same spelling of the surname, sub district of Birkenhead registers at Wirral. I cannot find anything for Charles Frederick on either website.

Hi Maggie
Thank you for your reply :)
Mmmmm that's interesting. I think I need to get back to my rellie to confirm the details again, as it would seem that although Martha and Charles were christened in Hale, they were not born there. The mystery deepens.
Whilst typing this I had another look on FreeBMD and have found Charles' birth, registered June Q 1876, district Prescot, Lancashire which covers Hale. Registers now divided between St. Helens, Knowsley, Liverpool and Halton districts.
Do you know if christening records from the 1870's showed the mother's maiden name?

Hi Jan,
Do you know if christening records from the 1870's showed the mother's maiden name?
I would say that it seems to be the luck of the draw.... more often than not the mother's maiden name is not mentioned, but occasionally it is. Having said that, most of my own christening records are earlier than 1870.

This is a long way from Shrewsbury isn`t it ???...lol
google Withins Way and you`ll find there was a ferry from Hale (withins way) to the other side of the Mersey...Birkenhead/seacombe/ etc...don`t know when this ferry stopped but Hale Village is a beautiful village and could well have been convenient for the church if it was only "across the river"...I moved here to Hale on 1st November...I am going for a pint now...I`ll see if there`s any Challinors on the War Memorial....allan
added...NO Challinors on War Memorial...bit cold today..I`ll have a look around the churchyard tomorrow for any..
ONE marriage on www.freebmd.org.uk for Richard ChallEnor(E not I ) and wife Jane...

Thank you very much Allan :D
I don't get on Rootschat much these days, so my apologies for the late reply. I still haven't sorted out the mystery, simply because I don't want to be spending on certificates that aren't direct line, and especially with the way the economy is at the moment.
Maybe one day when I win the lottery!!!!!!
Kind regards,
Jan :)

Hi Jan...I`m off tomorrow...do you want me to have a look around the Hale churchyard for any Challinors ??....allan :-\
-
Hello Allan
Yes please!!! and thank you very much for the kind offer. Only if you're passing, no need to make a special journey :)
Many thanks
Jan :D

100 yards away...let you know tomorrow (unless its raining )......allan

Hi
I know that I could purchase the birth certificates but I'm just trying to save myself £14
You would only need to purchase one certificate to get her maiden name
-
OK Jan...went around the churchyard and lucky enough there were 2 old men abt 75 who were volunteer "gardeners"...there`s only ONE Challinor headstone...a little difficult to read but it states at the bottom
Sarah Martha Challinor died ?? July 1919 AGED 69...So we know she was b 1850...the 2 men have said they will try and get the details which are on record in the church...I`ll get back to you with more info when I can..
ps Charles frederick challinor registered Prescot 1876 Ref No 8b 615 June qtr....No sign of Martha Jane.....allan ;)

Hi
There is a marriage for Richard Chellinor Dec Qtr 1873 Newton 11b 411
unfortunately there are two Jane's listed,
Jane Humphreys & Jane Trow.
Hope it will be of help
Regards Marj
-
thats a good shout Marj as Prescot and Newton Le Willows are quite close....probably 11 miles from Hale to Newton though....still well worth looking into...allan ;)
ADDED....looking at Maggies post regarding Martha Jane Challinor dec qtr 1874 in Birkenhead Ref No 8a 477 and looking across the river from Hale to Birkenhead district,I`m pretty sure Maggie is right with the connection...hopefully speak to the vicar soon...would be nice to get the mothers maiden name...allan ::)
-
I think Marj has come up trumps here...no Jane Humphreys born 1845-1860 in Newtown....SIX born in Newtown named Jane Trow.....on freebmd..allan
-
Sorry :-[ just rechecked the marriage and it should be Newtown (not Newton) missed my spelling

How rude of me, I haven't replied to either of you. I must have missed this thread :-[ :-[ :-[

Marj - I have that marriage! Richard Challinor married Jane Trow, they were my GGG Grandparents. Richard had been married before to an Emma Hughes and had 4 children. When married to Jane he went on to have another 6 children, all born in Newtown, Powys.
This mystery began when a distant rellie (descended from Richard and Emma's son Thomas) sent me all the family details from their bible, and listed were Richard with both wives and both sets of children. Martha and Charles were listed as Richard and Jane's children, although I'm not convinced ???
I suppose the quickest way to solve this mystery is purchase one of their birth certificates - oh no, more money ;D

Allan, thank you so much for doing that for me. I don't have a Sarah Martha in my Tree so goodness knows who she was!

I've just had a look at that marriage and it's a Jane Kendal so definitely not mine!!
Thank you once again :)

5 years later and I've picked up where I left off with these Challinors!!
I have purchased a FindMyPast subscription and have found Charles Frederick & Martha Jane listed in the 1880 Newtown (Montgomeryshire) death register, both died of scarlet fever. Also listed on the same page is Bertie Challinor, who also died of scarlet fever. Interestingly, all children are listed as living in Back Lane, Newtown, which is where the rest of the family remained for many years.
Think I can safely say they were all children of Richard Challinor & Jane Trow but I've still got to solve the mystery of the Lancashire births :-\
-
I would think if you want full proof verification or confirmation on these events (places or abodes, maiden names at birth) then only the purchase of GRO certificates or local register office certificates will do this.
Census info should give abode locations of sibling birth or death years between 10 years census years of a family

Hale Village - land wise - I would say 95% is owned by Lord Hesketh - Fleetwood ...the village is full of Tied Cottages which were used by the farmers - of which Richard Challinor was one
Baptism: 24 Dec 1876 St Mary, Hale, Lancashire, England
Charles Frederick Challinor - [Child] of Richard Challinor & Jane
Born: 12 May 1876
Abode: Hale
Occupation: Farm Labour[er]
Baptised by: [Rich. B. Stewart]
so try and find out if the house he was in in 1881 was also owned by Hesketh - Fleetwood as well ....I wouldn't mind betting it was ...hence the move...
