Annie- if you can tell us what county Gortin is in this thread can be moved so someone in the area might be able to help you.

I think there may be more than one place named Gortin (or Gorteen) but the mention of 'Beltrim' would lead me to suspect maybe this refrers to - Beltrim Castle, Gortin, Co. Tyrone.

If someone can tell me how to search over 800 replies to you, I would know or not whether you have found William Dudgeon in the Tyrone 1911 census.I found him because his family is just below my grandfather's. Poor young man. He must have been only 18 when he was killed. He lived on the Beltrim Castle estate and like many Irish boys may have followed the landlord, Col.Cole-Hamilton, to the war as they both seem to have been in The Royal Irish Rifles.. The 1911 census is great. It's at www.census.nationalarchives.ie. Just follow Tyrone - Gortin - Beltrim and there he is - 10 years old. The 1901 census is not on line yet and can be seen only at the Public Records Office in Belfast. There are bits on line at PRONI. I'm curious why you wanted to know about William as he can't have had much opportunity to have a family. I know Gortin (they say "Gorchin") very well and visit most years to see family there. So if I can tell you any thing else, please ask.

Hi Mrs P !
Sorry to be so tardy answering you but I haven't been here for a bit !! :-\
Yes I found William on the census ... but I didn't know the rest of the story you told ! ... thank you for that !
I'm interested in him by mistake really ... I have an Honour Roll for Gorton Manchester .... but once I realised my mistake I didn't want to take him off .... he is the son of an Annie after all .... so I thought I would try and find out about him and honour him on the roll !
I'd love to find out as much as I can about him !
Annie :)
PS I do have that photo but was hoping for a photo that showed the inscription !

Hi,
I know that this thread is Years old, but I came across it just prior to a visit to Gortin
So We visited St Patrick’s graveyard and there in the corner was a grave for Dudgeon, exactly as described.
But it had no inscription at all.
There is a marble plate but no text on it. No sign of stuck on letters since gone, but then it is over 100 years old
So I’m assuming that this is the one, but cannot be certain
I found only one other Dudgeon, but I think it was a Mary and much more recent.
