Richard Pentland married Mary Ann Davis, c. 1828
2 sons baptised William 1830 and Davis 1831 , BUT registered as Pendleton or similar.
Need information on these parents and on Davis. Have 99% of info on William after his migration to Australia 1850.
Have Richard on the Griffiths Tythe register.
Are there any living Pentland families in the Portadown /Tandragee area?

Hi
You might like to look at this thread: http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,150187.msg689493.html#msg689493
Although I am connected to the Pentlands (rather distantly, though) I haven't done any research on them myself. However, from contact with others, including some who contributed to that thread, I understand that the name was sometimes recorded as Pendleton.

Thank you for your prompt reply, arthur! I did have a look on that thread yesterday. Thomas Pentland is not as yet connected to our family of Pentlands. But perhaps somewhere down the track there may be a connection. The other problem is to find the connection between the Gilmerton Scotland Pentland family and the Portadwon Pentland families. I am in contact with colinY, and elizabeth from Sydney NSW, Australia. How can I contact the post from Moe? I sent her a message on the beginners page but she may not be looking. Moe is in the area where our William Pentland settled eventually. My brother has colated a booklet about the 'Gippsland Pentland Family history' .
Thank you for your message , Tony,
Are there any school records that would cover the time 1835-50? for the Portadown/ Tandragee area.
-
hi,
i dont know if school records still exsist but if they do you would find them on the proni ( public records of northern ireland) website;
http://applications.proni.gov.uk/LL_DCAL_PRONI_ECATNI/SearchPage.aspx
this allows you to search their catalogue. put the settings to "match phrase" and see what comes up! just typeing in a surname could find something of interest, with luck!

Have Richard on the Griffiths Tythe register.
hello again :)
richard is listed on griffiths valuation of ireland in the parish of drumcree in the annagh townland. The Annagh,as it's called, is on the tandragee side of portadown. the tithe applotment books are seperate from griffiths. the tithes were a tax that had to be paid to the established church and were much earlier than griffiths.

Thanks, Tony, for that correction on Griffiths valuation. Don't know if they in Tithes Applotment books. Is that info available on line.
I have tried to access PRONI for school pupil records, but I think I will have to send them an e-mail.
There is a John Pentland mentioned in some records (not school pupil) but there is no way of knowing if that could be our John Pentland. Feel that it is not as he asks /or is asked to be accepted as parish something or other. Can't remember what that was. Anyway I shall send an e-mail to PRONI.

the drumcree tithe applotments are in proni. you can find some tithe records for other parishes on different websites but i haven't come across those for drumcree yet so proni would be your best bet.

Thanks again, Tony. Colin Y. has given me a list of extra PENTLANDS that he could not place in his 'tree'' This has given me some more children of Richard PENTLAND and Mary Ann DAVIS. This totals about 4. Now I need to find the death/burial of Mary Ann DAVIS. She may have died in BELFAST. There was a rumour in the family of either her dying there or William PENTLANDS wifes mother dying there. I will post both these names seperately. I have looked in a couple of places with no certain result.
-
Ah, yes, and I have not found a death for Richard PENTLAND, son, Davis PENTLAND b. 1831
George H. PENTLAND b. 1825 and daughter, Sarah PENTLAND b. 1830
Davis had a son with Elizabeth KITCHEN , William John PENTLAND b. 1854.
So now the search widens to include any of these names in census/ obituaries etc.
-
Hi,
Ihad a look for the death on FAMILY SEARCH PILOT, a new source on www.familysearch.org
and assuming that your marriage for Mary Ann Davis is fairly accurate found only two possibilities, one in Belfast and one in Lurgan. If you have not used the new site yet I find it best to just enter the name and when all the names come up start to refine using the links at the top.

OK, Kings, I'll have a look. Thanks.

Hi, I have a Richard Pentland in my tree, he married Sarah Hamilton in Portadown july 1887.
-
Hello Linda. I think 'our' Richard Pentland would have been dead, or quite old. He married Mary Anne Davis abnout 1827-9. There could always be a second marriage to keep his feet warm. We just cannot find his or her deaths.
Did your Richard have children?
Audrey.

yes, these are the details from the 1911 census

I have a few Pentlands in my tree, has anyone managed to prove the link to Scotland?
-
Not yet!. There are lots of surmises.
Have you looked on the other 'Pentland ' page?
And which of the Pentlands do you have?
-
My Pentlands are all from Midlothian and I have a sizeable database of currently unrelated families which is under development. I laso have some Irish research and have blown the theories expounded in the George E Pentland book (Canadian branch) completely out of the water.
Which other Pentland page?
-
Click on 'Armagh' which brings up a page of lots of subjects. Actually 3 pages!
Scroll down to PENTLAND- Uprichard...... by 'RedRover', last post by 'Colin Y'. this week.
WSe are all trying to helpeach other!. Thats what roots chat is about isn't it??
I did find reference to John Pentland married to Mary Amour (think that is the name)with children in the Gilmerton area in the Edinburgh archives, but cannot say that this is the link. There does not seem to be any deaths for this family.
But then I can't find any deaths for my Irish lot either!.

Thanks Linda, I checked the 1911 cencus site you gave. This is not our 'Richard' . - Far too young!
