Audrey, Steve,

Had a look at freeCEN but the search engine did not turn up the family in 1841 despite the precise details you and Piglet gave (I am usually cursed with these things) - any insights as to what i might be doing wrong? In any case no doubt it will simply say "agricultural labourer" etc., but I should like to confirm the address at least.

This looks like them
Castleton 1841
Address: Kiddalins
OLIVER John M 60 Independent b Roxburghshire
OLIVER Adam M 20 Agricultural Labourer b Roxb
OLIVER Jane F 25 b Roxburghshire
OLIVER Agnes F 5 b Outside Census County
(1841 the ages were rounded down to nearest 5)

And this could be Henry (2nd daughter named Elizabeth)
1841 Ewes Dumfries
Swingill
OLIVER Henry M 25 Agricultural Labourer b Outside Census County
OLIVER Agnes F 25 b Dumfries-shire
OLIVER Helen F 2 b Dumfries-shire

Many thanks, Terry. Yes, this is Henry alright - I have actually seen Swingill Cottage, albeit unoccupied now. I know his wife came from Dumfriesshire, but these two girls are news to me.
I see why I failed with freeCEN - John was much older than I thought, Betty was dead probably and Henry had already left home.
-
going off the 1841 census posted by Terry I would say this is yours
John Oliver 12/8/1787 Castelton Rox
father John Oliver
mother Margret Armstrong

Hello
An IGI search brings up 3 female children for Henry Oliver and Agnes Nichoson... There are anomalies which sometime ignore males.
1. HELEN OLIVER Birth: 28 SEP 1838 Ewes, Dumfries, Scotland
2. ELIZABETH OLIVER Birth: 07 FEB 1840 Ewes, Dumfries, Scotland
2. JANE OLIVER Birth: 18 JAN 1845 Ewes, Dumfries, Scotland

Audrey, Steve,
Thanks again. There is quite a discrepancy between the John recorded as 60 in the 1941 census and the birth-date of 1787 you mention Audrey. Were the recorders as rough and ready as that? (It would also mean he was just 18 when first child arrived, but quite possible no doubt.)
Jane is my ancestor and I think there was only one younger boy, who came after her.
Excuse my ignorance, but what is IGI?
Regards
Alan

Hannah Armstrong age 13 in 1841 census above appears to be
Hannah Armstrong born 6/1/1828 to
William Armstrong and Margret Telfer, this William is the brother of Margret Armstrong married to John Oliver all born Castleton

Hello Alan
I believe that every Family Historian should be aware of the following:
To use the IGI - www.familysearch.org to search for all children born to the same parents go to:
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=igi/search_IGI.asp&clear_form=true
1. Enter father and mothers names in the 2 right hand boxes (sometimes best to have mothers first name only)
2. 'Event' select 'birth/christening'
3. 'Year' - select - type 'marriage year date if known '
4. 'Year range' - enter - '+ or - 20 years'
5. 'Region' enter 'British Isles'
6. Country - enter 'Scotland'
7. County - enter - 'Roxburgh' (assumes this is the county you’re searching in - or leave all counties)
* Press enter and hopefully up will come a list :O)
A site which comprehensively explains about batch numbers etc is:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers.htm#PageTitle
Give it a try - it's good for dates up to 1875. Always double check that the batch no. is the same for all of the children. Before 1855 you'll sometimes come up with only the father on an OPR - after 1855 you should have both parents always. There are also anomalies in that sometimes only children of one gender will show..... Also be aware of the 2 types of entries - 'extracted' are from the records whilst 'submitted' are submitted by rsearchers and are sometimes wildly inaccurate...........
Good luck.

In1841 John Oliver is aged 60 (which means anything from 60 to 64) therefore I would have expected a birth year between 1777 and 1781) If John's parents were John and Margaret you would expect his first son to be named John and second daughter to be named Margaret (not 100% but pretty much the norm in Scotland)
