Looking for Hannah Vickers in 1901 census. Hannah was born in Mentmore, Bucks 1872. In the 1891 census she was living in Bedfordshire. The 1911 census (Index only) she may be living Islington, London.
I beleive Hannah had a child Dorothy.
Any help much appreciated,
Thanks

Just beat me to it but it looks as though she was possibly a servant to William Wyllie a Farmer together with several Estate workers and their families.

Possible but as he is in household no. 2 and she is in no.6, The Old Rectory, I am wondering where the rector is? It is possible that he was away from home on the night of the census.

Thank you both for your quick replies, thank you.
I have a sneaky feeling that Hannah was not married although she says she was a widow. The 1911 census should settle that.
Much appreciated

Wem is in Shropshire and the census gives Dorothy's birthplace as East Dulwich so I don't think that can be the right one, Pam.
There is another one, in Dec 1899, Camberwell, 1d/853
Dorothy May V Vickers

The FreeBMD entry for the Camberwell birth has the following note attached to it;
"Illegitimate daughter of Hannah Varney of Ledbury Bucks, who adopted the maiden name of her grandmother, Mary Viccars (b.Aston Abbots, 1803, married to John Varney, 26/10/1826"
Whether or not this is accurate, who knows, but it might help.

You are an absolute Gem, Hannah Vickers was Hannah Varney and Mary Vickers was indeed Hannahs grandmother and John Varney her grandfather. Mary Vickers and John Varney were my gt.gt. grandparents.
Thank you Jen and Pam for your help.

Hi Carol
I’ve just come across your posts.
Dorothy is my grandmother. I’d love to know if you were able to find / validate any more information on her please.
Thank you

Hello Joanne,
My, that post was a long time ago, 15 years in fact, I had to read what I'd written.
I do have more information on Dorothy, will have to sort it out and get back in touch with you.
John Varney and Mary Vickers were my gt.gt grandparents, one of their sons Edward married Susan Grubb who were the parents of Hannah and grandparents of Dorothy.
Maybe a good idea to tell me what information you have, to safe duplicating.
Best wishes

Hi Carol
Thank you for coming back to me so quickly.
On Dorothy’s birth / marriage certificate her father is listed as Archibald Humphrey Vickers. Dorothy had always said that he was a solider. But we’ve never been able to trace him and have suspected he did not exist.
I note there is a reference on the FreeBMD entry about her being illegitimate. Do you know if there is a way to find out if that was an entry at the time or a subsequent entry?
If you are interested I have photos of Edward Varney (senior), Susan, Edward junior (Teddy) and Hannah. I’m happy to share.
Thank you
