Hello,
I have just discovered that one of my ancestors was an innkeeper in Burnley around 1800. He was at the Black Bull Inn, Lane End, Burnley. I would like to know if this inn still exists but the only Lane End I can find is in Hapton. Would anyone know if this would be the correct place and if the inn still exists please?
Many thanks,
Jill

Hi Jill,
I have a suspicion that it will be the Black Bull at Lane Head. This is on the outskirts of Burnley near Briercliffe. I will have a dig around for you.

This is it marked on a modern map:
www.maps.live.com
Type in the postcode BB10 2BZ and then choose birds eye view. Zoom in and pan around.
The right hand side is definitely a later addition and probably other bits too.

Hi Mo,
Thank you so much for your help. Yes, it does look as though this inn has had bits added to it. I wonder if the lane on the left of the inn was once Lane End?
Thanks again for your help.
Best wishes,

Hi Jill,
There is a book called "Inns and Taverns of Burnley" in the Library so I will have a look at it when I next call in. It is the only Black Bull Inn that I know of. I have also looked in my early directories (1848 is the earliest I have) and it is the only one mentioned.

Hi Mo,
If it's the only Black Bull Inn in the 1848 directory, it sounds as though that's the one. Thank you so much for your help. I must go to Burnley and have a look at it :)
Kind regards,
Jill

I also have an ancestor that was an Inn Keeper of the Black Bull at Lane Head. He died there in 1804 & his name was James Read. He was married to Tabitha Crossley.
James's will dated 26th July 1804 says that James built new cottages at Lane End and was able to leave one to each of his sons when they achieved the age of 21. I have no idea where these are so would be grateful for help in this matter.
I had a look for the post code given in one of the posts from mosiefish but www.maps.live.com isn't accessible for some reason.
I love the photo of the Black Bull from kris_baxter73. Does anyone know what date it was taken? Perhaps the cottages that James built are those to the left of the pub.

Hi brita,
That link to maps no longer works it is now .http://www.bing.com/maps/
You can also type the postcode into http://maps.google.com/ and you should be able to drop the little yellow man down to see the street view.

Thanks very much Mo.
I tried maps.google but didn't find the pub. The bing link took me straight there when I looked at the bird's eye view.
The pub looks massive these days. There are several cottages around about that could include those that James built.

For google maps type in 55 Marsden Road, Burnley and zoom in. It should land you on the roof of the pub.
