Title: Austin/Kentstown/Slanduff
Post by: caoimhin on Monday 23 February 09 19:03 GMT (UK)
Does anyone have any info on the Austin family of the Kentstown and, previously Slanduff area (circa 1850?)?. Peter Austin lived in Slanduff and his son, Patrick, lived in Kentstown House. Patrick was married to Caroline Matthews and their son, also Patrick, was my grandfather (born 1891). He married Elizabeth Bowens and subsequently moved to Westmeath and then settled in England. Any info would be appreciated.

Austins moved to nearby Beauparc in 1880, while retaining ownership of Slanduff farm.  Austins buried in mounttown grave yard near Slanduff

Thank you Eja
I am unsure of the geography of area, is Kentstown House in Beaupark area? Were they originally based at Slanduff farm? I know the family owned Kentstown House early 1900s before their father (G. grandfather)died young and they had to sell up.
Hoping to visit next year and will visit Mounttown graveyard...thanks

Hi my first post but I’m interested in the Kentstown/Slanduff chat. I’ve just found out that a Patrick Bird (Byrd) was herdsman at Slanduff. He’s living there with Margaret Parker his wife and children during the 1901 and 1911 census. Landlord was Mr.Peter Austin. Any further info guys please? Cheers.

Thanks KP! I’m trying to find out if there’s still Birds living in the Kentstown area. The original Patt Bird was born in Ardee in 1842 and his brother James was my great great grandfather and he lived at Lobinstown Meath where he ran a little shop. It’s an interesting journey! A

Hi 👋 I’m following the Bird family who were living at Slanduff early 1900s. The father Patt Bird was working as a shepherd at the Austin estate.

Have you tried EIRPhoneBook online?
https://www.eirphonebook.ie/q/name/

Put in Bird, then Kentstown, Co Meath - one result.

Hi everyone
Apologies for the delay in joining the conversation. Peter Austin was my Great grandfather but. unfortunately, I know little of what went on in the early 1900s so would not be aware of the Bird family.  I wish I could be of more help. There are a few distant relatives I could ask so will get back to you if I find out anything.
I notice that the interests of Kiltaglassan include the Neillys of Antrim, I am descended from the Neelys and Neillys of Antrim and Derry.  My father, Thomas Neely married Elizabeth Austin. I don't know if there is any merit in this connection for your research but would there may be some connection?
Let me know if you think there may be a connection.
Kind regards
Caoihmin (Kevin Neely)

Hi caoihmin have you registered with the Irish newspaper Archives yet I’ve found it a useful source, you could search ‘Peter Austin’ &other family names. Also if they went to national school here then the National Folklore Collection also online is a great way to find out about people of the district and townlands etc, good luck!

The Dúchas project is to digitize the National Folklore Collection and enable access to material from the Collection on a public website.

So James Bird my great grandfather born 1843 died in 1920 at Lobinstown Co Meath.
His wife Annie Greene and two infants predeacesed him. There are several possible burial places but so far haven’t  found their grave. Any clues as
To where that Catholic generation residing in Lobinstown were likely to be buried. Annie Greene bird was a native of Lobinstown also, her father was Peter. Ty
