I have received the birth certificate of one of my ancestors William George Thompson born 1850 Sheffield. With finding out the mother's maiden name which is Clare, (Jane) I am now trying to find her marriage to William Thompson. According to census 1851-1901 Jane is said to be born Liverpool abt. 1818. I have checked the 1841 census and there is a Jane Clare living with someone, presumably her mother called Margery Clare born Ireland.
The other puzzle I have is that they had a child born abt.1846 Belfast, Ireland, John Thompson, according to the census but the rest of the children were born Sheffield. Now the census for William Thompson, Jane's husband says born Sheffield. I have looked at various websites and the usual but not found anything.
If any one has any ideas on this or where to look next, I would much appreciate some input. To say the least, this has rather done my head in today. ??? :'(

Thank you so much for that. I have looked at FreeBMD today and obvsiously missed it..... like your picture, can't see the wood for the trees! :D
I will send for the marriage certificate now but still begs the question why William was away from home in Sheffield, unless he wasn't born there and why one of their children was born in Belfast! All good stuff.
