Johnnie Walker (as in the whisky) was born Riccarton 25 July 1805.
Does anyone know (or point me in the right direction to find out) if he had any brothers or sisters and if so their names. Family rumour has it that we are descendants of a brother of his.
-
According to IGI his parents were Alexander Walker and Elizabeth Gemmel.
I've only done a quick search on IGI and ScotlandsPeople but there are no results coming up for other children.
Perhaps the best way to go about this is to research your family backwards and ascertain whether you have Alexander and Elizabeth as ancestors.

Thanks for your messages ev & daval57.
I have the census details already.
Will try the website you have given me for further information.
I have got as far back as 1830 on my walker line but all live in & around York/Leeds area. Would be a big jump from Kilmarnock area to Leeds/York in one generation.
Thanks again

Sounds as though you've got a wee family myth.
Console yourself by pouring a double, sit back and enjoy (Although my first choice would not be a Johnnie! ;D)
Dave (in Glasgow)
Just an afterthought. Perhaps the family link goes back further, maybe you are related to a brother of JW's father or even further back. :-\ Keep the myth alive. ;)
Good luck with the rest of your research. D

Alexander and Elizabeth were married (or at least the banns were read) in Riccarton on 11 May 1804. (source IGI)
Unlikely that document, available on SP for a small charge, will show you much detail but might possibly have fathers names, ie JW's grandfather.
Depends on how much you wish to pursue their line to try and find a connection to yours.
There are a few possible births for Alexander on IGI and SP but nothing definite from the few searches I've done.
Have you thought about checking MI's for the area. Having money, it is quite possible JW had a stone erected for his parents / family?

I'm probably duplicating your own research, however, just in case, I'm throwing stuff at you. You never know where you'll find a connection.
Searching for parents, rather than JW himself, I found this which gives their death dates (might narrow down possible MI's) http://www.nndb.com/people/169/000178632/

Thanks for all your help & information Dave.
Your suggestions will be taken up. I can forsee a trip to Kilmarnock in the summer months!

I don't know if this thread is still active, but I am descended from Alexander Walker who was Johnnie's First Cousin and I have quite a bit of information about the family.

Hi IOMBar
Sorry only just seen your post- I havent visited the website for a long time -just spotted it in my deleted/spam.
Am still interested to know if Johnnie had any siblings or not-are you able to help?
Any info would be great

Hi Gwenda
I haven't done much on this recently as my line of descent is through Johnnie's Uncle John ( of whom I have quite a bit of information). I don't have any siblings listed for Johnnie, but he must have thought of my line as his close family as they were living at Toddrigs much of the time and looked after Johnnie when his father Alexander died when he was only 14. 'My' John had 9 children, at least two of whom were born at Toddrigs.

My connection is through my g g grandmother. She was Elizabeth Wright Walker born 1830 in York & her parents were William Walker & his wife Sarah(maiden name not yet known). William is supposedly related to Johnnie Walker in some way.
-
Hi Gwenda
Its a definite possibility. John Walker and Agnes Millar had three children, the oldest John born Dreghorn 1773 is my ancestor, another son Alexander who was Johnnie's father and the third son was William.

Dear Members
I may not have been looking hard enough but I haven't seen a comprehensive tree for this family. I am tracing one known and one rumoured connection:
1 Mary McLellan Walker b 1862 (married James Galloway; daughter of Alexander Walker, son of John 'Johnnie'Walker, and Georgina Patterson, his first wife)
2 Eliza Walker b 1833 Ireland, died 1881 Glenelg, Grey South, Ontario, Canada. Parents possibly Edward and Mary
I wandered if Eliza might be a niece or first cousin once removed of Johnnie?
Many thanks

Megan
so Elizabeth Purvis was Johnnie's second wife?

My apologies; I wasn't terribly clear. Georgina Patterson was the first wife of Alexander Walker (1837-1889, I believe), son of 'Johnnie' Walker and Elizabeth Purvis/Purves. Alexander's second wife was Isabella McKemmie (married 1867). There are quite a few public family trees on the internet that have Mary McLellan Walker incorrectly as the daughter of Isabella.

Hi IOMBar,
I'm also a descendant of John Walker (1773), by his son William Glassford Walker (born 1812). Most of what I know about my family history comes from an article in the "Ayrshire Notes" (http://www.ayrshirehistory.org.uk/Bibliography/pdfs/an17.pdf). I did also learn some family history from an old cousin (twice removed), Norman Porteous. Norman told us that W.G.Walker was a first cousin to Johnnie Walker, but I haven't been able to confirm it. I'd be interested to learn more about our common ancestors.

Hi I am new to this history hunting, (and am not sure if I am doing this correctly)but I have a query regarding Johnnie Walkers son, I am chasing up some family history. I have read a book called live and let Live and it mentions that a son of Johnnie Walker bought a property in the central Otago area of New Zealand about 1895 to 1898. I am hoping some one may have information that confirms his connection to New Zealand. Thanks
-
As far as I know, Johnnie Walker had three sons. Alexander stayed in Scotland with the firm. I have no knowledge as to where the other two sons went: Robert born c1840 and John born c1845.
Incidentally PUR I have Woodhead relatives who went to central Otago in 1890s, descendants still there but they are related by marriage to Johnnie Walker

Can anyone help me to identify an Hotel on South Uist that was owned by a member of the Walker Whiskey family around the mid 1970s? I would like to visit the place, but have been unable to identify which is the Hotel in question. Many thanks
