Title: Hendy of Wicklow
Post by: Lazarus on Sunday 22 February 09 22:13 GMT (UK)
My grandmother was raised in Australia by her maternal grandparents Thomas Hendy and Margaret Maria Long.I believe they were married Wicklow and came to Australia arriving Melbourne on "Constance" Oct.1855.Thomas was 30 and Margaret 24.As I know little more about them,I am hoping someone might be able to help find them or family.
I think a daughter Alice may have travelled with them on the "Constance".She died 4 Mar 1856 aged 1.
Help appreciated.

There are a few Hendy entries on Griffiths Valuation (1850s/1860s) - which may be a little bit after the timeframe you mention, but could be connected.  The Wicklow entries are based in and around Baltinglass.

see : http://griffiths.askaboutireland.ie/gv4/gv_family_search_form.php

some of the entries is for Land Owner - and they dont seem to list on the index correctly -  but if you view the original Griffith page for the last 5 or so entries listed for Deerpark, Baltinglass, Co. Wicklow , you'll see a John and William Hendy

Thank you Shane.I will check that out.
The only information I have regarding the Hendys,is that a daughter Alice died 4 Mar 1856 in Australia. She had only been in Victoria for two months, suggesting she had become ill on the way out.Her place of birth was given as Wicklow Ireland. The ship "Constance " arrived Oct 1855.

Apparently Griffiths Valuation was taken in Kildare in 1851.  It mentions three Hendys:-

Hendy Thomas  of Lipstown Upper,  Davidstown, Kildare
Hendy Henry of Lipstown Upper, Davidstown, Kildare
Hendy George of Lipstown Upper Davidstown, Kildare.

It was common for a couple to marry in the bride's parish - so that may account for the mention of Wicklow - which is closeby.

Cheers

A Francis Hendy is listed in Pigots 1824 Directory as being a Publican and Grocer in Baltinglass, Co Wicklow.

My GGGrandfather, Nicholas Wilson, married Louisa Anne Hendy in Baltinglass, County Wicklow in 1862.   The most I can add to that is she was born in 1844 and her father John probably born in 1812 and died 1878.

Wilson/Henry marriage (https://www.familysearch.org/search/records#count=20&query=%2Bgivenname%3ANicholas~%20%2Bsurname%3AWilson~%20%2Bany_place%3ABaltinglass~&collection_id=1584964)  (Familysearch)

Welcome to RootsChat blueherron.
As you can see I am interested in the Hendy name as my grandmother was raised by her Hendy relatives here in Australia.
Her mother Madeline Sarah Hendy very young following the birth of a brother. This was in Australia.
I don't know much about the Hendys but Thomas Hendy and Margaret Long had married in Wicklow and came to Australia in 1855.
From my limited knowledge of their background,I think there may have been a connection to Baltinglass.
I hope we might have further infomation to share.

Further to my last posting,I believe Thomas Hendy and Margaret Maria Long were married 1853 Baltinglass Vol.2 page 419 in case you have access to that record.

Thank you Lazarus.  I see Thomas Hendy's father is William.    Louisa Anne's father was John, so it is most likely she is Thomas' cousin.  Unless there were more Hendys in Baltinglass than I suspect.

Thank you blue Herron.
How did you determine that the father of Thomas Hendy was William ?
I think that may be correct but not proven yet.
I am not aware of the mothers name.
The father of Margaret Maria Long may have been Robert Long.
Again mothers name unknown.

Thank you Aghadowey.
I assume you meant William Hendy when you wrote Henry.
Now to find siblings or other information if possible.
Blueherron thinks Thomas Hendy and Louisa Ann Hendy might be cousins.
Thanks for your help.

Hello Cara
Appologies if I have missed something.Certainly not my intention.
I assume you are saying that Thomas Hendy who married 1853 Baltinglass,Margaret Maria Long and came to Australia 1855 on "Constance",was a son of William Hendy and had siblings Alice bC1824 who married Robert Taylor 1847 Ballynure,Wicklow,William ??? and Mary Anne ???
I was not aware of these siblings who must have remained in Ireland.
Thomas and Margaret had an infant Alice with them when they arrived Australia but she died C1856.
I am guessing that Alice might have been named after the sister of Thomas.
The posting from the IGI regarding a Louisa Anne Hendy marrying Nicholas Wilson is speculative as I can't yet make that connection.
I am concerned when you say I had not answered you on your list.
What did I miss? Which other list?

Regards
Rex
