Hello Lorraine,

MITCHELL is not an uncommon name in the 1841 Dalgety.

Here are the only possibilities (remember, ages over 15 were rounded down to the nearest 5, relationships were not shown, and birthplace indicated only the county).

DALGETY
ED 1, page 12
Terrace Row (the enumerator doesn't specify where Terrace Row is - before it are Crossgates, Springhill,  Mossgreen, and Ansonhill then Terrace Row followed by Durham Row, back to Terrace Row, then Fary Fa, then Square).
MITCHELL Janet, F, 35, Outdoor Labourer, born Fife
MITCHELL Stewart, F, 15, Coal Miner, born Fife

Janet's age not right for you - but ages were notoriously unreliable; if you think she would have been 43/44 she only had to drop it to 39 to be recorded as 35.
Stewart/Stuart would have been ca 18 so would have been recorded as 15.
No sign of father William.

There is a possible Janet jnr in Dalgety (she would have been ca 17 so would have been recorded as 15) as follows:
ED 4, page 3
St Davids
DRYSDALE James, M, 15, Farmer, b FIF
DRYSDALE Isabella, F, 50, b FIF
DRYSDALE Rankeillor, F, 15, b FIF
DRYSDALE William, M, 13, b FIF
DRYSDALE Abiel, M, 11, b FIF

ADDISON William, M, 15, Ag Lab, b FIF
JULVEER Catherine, F, 20, Female Servant, b FIF
MITCHELL Janet, F, 15, Female Servant, b FIF

There's also a Janet MITCHELL, F, 14, Female Servant, b FIF in a household in Burntisland but she's too young.

Hello Judy,
Could I take you up on your kind offer .
I wouldn't normally ask for a general search but if possible could you send me details of DRYSDALE families in Dalgety . I am trying to sort out my DRYSDALE ancestors and any help would be appreciated . I have noted a previous reply for Isabella and family at St. Davids .

Thanks in advance ,
David

Dear Judy,

Can you please have a look in Burntisland for this family - they were there in 1851, so hopefully they will show up in 1841 also!

Robert Swan b@1795 (Sailor) & his wife Euphemia b@1792, known children - Jean 1816, Henry 1819, Ann 1823, Robert 1826, David 1826, William, 1827, Euphemia 1829, Elizabeth 1831 & Lawrence (Laurence) 1833.

Also Robert's brothers Lawrence (Laurence) 1790, David 1792 & Henry 1802.  All born in Burntisland.

Thanks

K-C

SWAN David 15, Cooper Apprentice, born in Scotland but not Fife (i.e. OUC)

SWAN Laurence 7 b FIF

ED2, page 4/5
Back Street

SWAN William 60 Miller
SWAN Helen 30
SWAN Catherine 15
SWAN John 15
All above b FIF

None in Aberdour or Dalgety.

Unfortunately, the 1841 rounds ages down for people aged 15 and above, and does not give marital status or relationships.

William SWAN the Miller looks like the one who married Margaret GLASS in 1802 (North Leith/Burntisland).  Births of about 11 children to them are in the IGI including Hellon 1808, Catherine 1822, and John 1825.

I can't find any Robert SWAN but it looks as though his full name was Robert Campbell SWAN? A marriage of a Campbell SWAN to a Euphemia DEWAR in South Leith, 1815, is in the IGI.  And births to parents of those names - Jean b 1816 BI, Henry b 1819 BI, Benjamin Oliver bap 1821 South Leith, Ann bap 1823 South Leith, David & Robert bap 1825 South Leith, William b 1827 Stanraer Wigton, Euphemia b 1829 Stornoway R&C, Elisabeth bap 1831 BI (all with father's name as Campbell), Laurence 1832 BI (father's name as Robert Campbell).

You mention approximate birth years. A Robert Campbell SWAN was b 4 Jun 1795 BI, parents Robert SWAN and Elizabeth NIDDERY.

Michael,

There are no LINDSAYs (or similar), SHORTs or SIBBALDs in the 1841 census in Burntisland.

You say that William LINDSAY was b 1840 in Burntisland but the details you provide list his birthplace as Largo.  There are extracted entries (also some LDS submissions) in the IGI for children of Thomas LINDSAY and Charlotte SIBBALD - they include William born in 1840 in Largo.

Your details say that William married Mary Ann SHORT in Burntisland in 1863 (this marriage - extracted entry - is in the IGI), and that Mary Ann had been born in Burntisland in 1836.

There are two LDS submissions in the IGI for a Mary Ann SHORT b Fife round about this time, both with  parents listed as John SHORT and Ann COOK.  One gives birthdate and place as 1836 Burntisland, the other as 4 Jan 1833 Dunfermline.  Perhaps Mary Ann was actually in Dunferline in 1841.

Regards,

JAP

JudyP

Hi, could you do a look up in Burntisland for the MORRISON family please?  I am looking for an Alexander Morrison and his wife Helen (nee Garnoch).  Alexander was born 30 October  1794 in Burntisland.

I would be interested in any details of Alexander Morrison and family if you have them.

Thanks!   Marp

Dear marp,

I am very embarrassed to have to tell you that the information is on my other computer (not backed up onto this one) - and the other computer is currently down at the local Mr Fixit (and it may have a terminal disease ...).

However ...

A kind person on the Rootsweb Fife list at:
http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/intl/SCT/SCT-FIFE.html
has the full Fife 1841 census (I believe) and is happy to do lookups.

My apologies,

I have a feeling that the Robert Campbell Swan was known as Campbell until his father Robert died and then reverted to RCS

I am Michael Alan Swan, GGS of Lawrence - Robert Campbell - Alan Henson Swan - (*)

There are a number of Glass entries showing in Burntisland in 1841. You can see these on FREECEN here www.freecen.org.uk Just make sure you click the right tabs and it will bring up the actual entries there for 1841. They also looks to have converage for 1851.
