I'm trying to go further back with the following. Margaret Clark Purves (born 12/4/1908 Edinburgh married James Tullock Hogg. Margaret's mother Alice Jane Smith married John Purves. Alice's mother Jane Wylie married James Smith on 6/10/1871 Edinburgh. Trying to find Jane Wylie's family and James Smith's. Any other info would be great as unable to access Scottish info.

Hi Joanna21
Do you have any Census records at all for the people you have mentioned?
Do you have the marriage records of:
Alice Jane SMITH to John PURVES (and do you know when/where either was born?)
Jane WYLIE to James SMITH 1871 (and do you know when/where either was born?)
Cheers

Here is what I just found, I thought it might be of interest to you...
1871 census at Hynds House, Crichton, Midlothian
Name: May Human Jefford (I think this must have been a poorly written record as I am sure this should read Mary Jeffrey (not sure about the 'Human' part yet as I have just started to research this person)
Age: 31 b: abt 1840
Relationship: Head, Gender: Female, Where born: Hadsmine, East Lothian
Registration Number: 681
Registration district: Crichton
Civil parish: Crichton
County: Midlothian
Address: Hynds House
Occupation: Out Door Labourer
ED: 2
Household schedule number: 77
Line: 24
Roll: CSSCT1871_154
Household Members:
Name Age
May Human Jefford 31
David Jeffery 9
Thomas Jeffery 5
John Henry Wylie 1 Mo
William Thomson 13
I am not sure why John Henry Wylie is being shown as a son of Mary Jeffrey m.s Thomson? Did she remarry? Her (first) husband was James Jeffrey. I am not yet sure when he died....
Anyway - I just thought you might like to know there was another Wylie in the house at this time.
Best wishes
Richard

Hi
I can't help with going back but I can help a little with later info. Margaret Clark Purves was my grandmother. She married James Tullock Hogg (buried in Tranent Cemetery East Lothian), and then married Harold Edward Grant. They moved to Devon. Sorry I haven't got any dates to hand but I should be able to get them without too much trouble.
Margaret and James had two daughters Alice, the eldest now living in Winterbourne near Bristol and Jane (my mother) who died in 1964.
As you are researching the family then I guess we must be some distant relations.
If you need any more help or would like to get in touch I am on hotmail using my initial and surname dot com
Regards Ian Kirkup

Hey there,
I don't have any answers here regarding the John Purves you mention, but perhaps he is related to the John Purves I am looking for. He married Mary Lauder in 1882 in DUNS? They had a daughter Mary Lauder Purves.
Anyone have any ideas it would be great.
Thanks
Jeff
