Title: Cornish ancestors in South Africa - JAMES family, HONEY
Post by: James - Cornwall on Saturday 21 February 09 00:18 GMT (UK)
Several of my ancestors spent time in South Africa  - Samuel James & his wife Selina Ann moved from Cornwall, England out to Johannesburg (he was a miner) - but he died out there on February 11th 1913 (aged 36)- I am trying to find out the dates that the family moved out to South Africa (& on which ship), & how soon after Samuel's death Selina Ann returned to England.

I wonder, also, if anyone could unearth any details regarding Samuel's untimely death.

Also my Great Great Grandfather, William Henry Honey ( a stonemason) spent some time in South Africa (I think around 1897) - he lived in Marazion, near Penzance, Cornwall, England & was born c.1856. Again, I'd be very interested if anyone can help me find details of William Henry Honey's passage to & from South Africa.

Hi James

I wonder if you have tried "Googling" Camborne School of Mines"  There are pages of links.

I lived in Redruth 40 years ago and remember  being told how miners from the school went to countries around the world. As diverse as S America, Spain S.Africa etc

it may be possible for you to contact their museum to see if there any records

Does anyone know if passenger lists to/from South Africa can be found on the internet at all?

Findmypast.com has passenger listings to South Africa from 1890. Try looking there.

Hi James

Just found a record at http://www.ancestor.co.za if you search on Samuel James, it's the 6th item down.

Could be your Samuel (his wife is listed as Selina Ann Kitte)

Best of luck
Mal

Is there any way of finding out where Samuel James was buried, in Johannesburg? - he died February 11th 1913 (aged 36)
