Title: Marshall/Medd
Post by: highfield54 on Friday 20 February 09 23:58 GMT (UK)
William Marshall & Ann Sophie Medd married in 1841 I have traced this, but can not find when they were b, I think they were from the North Cave/Howden area.
I have traced the Medd family back to 1792 but can not find a Ann Sophie. I can only think she is a relative of the Medd family I have traced in my family,
  hope you can help :-*

Hi,

Not much to go on there.  :-\

You say you've traced their marriage in 1841 - where did it take place? Do you have the certificate? If so, what other info can you give us? ages, fathers' names etc.

What leads you to think they came from North Cave/Howden?

If you can give us a bit more info, it might be possible to do some look ups in the right area.

I am going to the Record Office tomorrow morning.

If you can let me know by this evening if you don't actually have the marriage certificate, I can look it up and get the full details. This will give William & Ann Sophie's ages and might give a clue as to where they're from as well.

You will, of course, need to tell me where and when they married.

I have been doing some searching today to answer your questions, I have found the following....William Marshall b 29 May 1799 in North Newbald who married Hannah Walker in 1833, which makes me think Ann Sophie Medd  could be his 2nd wife they married in 1841 York, my ancester come from the Howden /North Cave area and we have a Mary Medd married to William Blanshard and the the 1881 cenus it states living with them William Marshall Father in Law aged 82.
now I wondered if Ann Sophie was Mary;s sister/relative I can not find trace of her birth. I thank you for your kind offer to look this up   William Marshall Married Ann Sophie Medd 1841 records at York  it is Medd & not Mead as I have that confirmed on my great G/Fs birth certificate,  I am going to go into Borthwick at York University when I have complete my list of look up's
Thank you   Helena.   PS Nth Newbald is in the Howden Area

That's a pity - I'm afraid the Beverley RO doesn't have York PRs, so I can't look up the marriage. You're right - the Borthwick is the place to go.

I'm intrigued by the 1881 census - William Marshall is supposedly William Blanshard's father in law so that would mean he was Mary (nee Medd)'s father. The only reason I can think that she'd be called Medd when she married would be if she was the illegitimate daughter of your Ann Sophie i.e. prior to Ann Sophie's marriage to William.

Does that makes sense?  I see from the 1881 census that Mary gives her birthplace as North Cave and about 1832, so I'll have a look tomorrow at the North Cave baptisms (which are at the Beverley RO) to see if I can find her baptism and  anything else to do with Medds.

Yes the father in law  bit is strange, but I can tell you that Mary had a sister older than her named Martha, & Mary was b 17th Jun 1832 her mother was Alice Medd an unmarried mother Family search.org batch no. C106631..source 0919476...Print out 6910855  these may help. I do have a source for Alice Medd
b Mar 1792 at Sinnington Nr Pickering.her patents were Frank & Mary Medd (.there is another Alice Medd b 1792 at Brompton but she married John Barker so that rules her out.)   Batch C108572...source 0990911...print 6911152 I have found this info at Family search.org..but cannot trace a Ann Sophie..

Thank you so much for your efforts it seems to get harder the further back you go. will be going to Borthwick next week I have a few look ups to do.

Hi Helena,

I had a look at the North Cave PRs this morning at the RO. I couldn't see anything at all for an Ann Sophie, I'm afraid.

I found the 2 baptisms you mentioned:

Apr 11 1829 Martha Medd d/o Alice singlewoman
Jun 17 1832 (born Mar 23) Mary Medd d/o Alice  singlewoman.

They are obviously too young to be siblings of Ann Sophia.

So, no futher on!!  ::)

Let's hope you have better luck at the Borthwick.

Jill

Ann Sophia Medd and William Marshall same pg.

As this is late 1841 we should be able to find her on 1841 Census.

I'm not sure if this will help here or not.

I've researched a line of Marshall's in North Newbald and I have an Ann Marshall that married a William Medd.  Ann Marshall-Medd had a brother William Marshall born about 1799 most likely in North Newbald, Ann and William's parents were John Marshall and Elizabeth Stephenson.  I do not have a marriage listed for William Marshall at this time, but at least one of William and Ann Medd's sons is in North Cave in 1851 and 1861.  Could this be your father-in-law William Marshall who was 82 in 1881?  Its been awhile since I worked on this particular line of Marshalls but if this sounds like it may be the families you're looking for I'd be happy to see if I can help. I recall the Medd tree was a bit confusing and I didn't pursue it for long, but I should still have my notes.
