Title: DVD Recorder
Post by: MichaelB on Thursday 19 February 09 20:23 GMT (UK)
Evening all,
I'm about to throw out my new DVD recorder as I can't set it up, does anybody know how to set up a DVD recorder to an existing freeview box? Is it classed as an external device or an AV amplilfier (receiver)?. The pictures in the instructions have cables leading to both of these devices and I'm not to sure which one I connect to. I also have a video connected, I only ask this as I am told that if you have two freeview receivers you can record a channel other than the one you are watching.
Please help
Michael

My freeview box has two tuners, one used to a) watch program whilst second used to record prog.
On my freeview box it has two scart sockets, one to connect to TV whilst second for connection to video recorder or DVD recorder.
To record off freeview inputs have to be set to aux on recorder/s.
I would imagine if you connected video and DVD recorder in daisy chain you should be o'k.

It will be classed as an external device.   The biggest challenge you will have with a separate Freeview box is that the DVD recorder will probably have no way of selecting the channel on the box, so you will have to make sure that it's on the right channel before the recording starts.  You should have considered buying a DVD recorder with a Freeview box built in - it would have saved you a lot of work.

Hi Guys,
Sorry for the lateness in my reply but I have been on a well earned holiday. Thanks for your advice, I seem to have got both devices working independently and I can use both devices at the same time. The DVD player has a built in freeview tuner but as yet I still cannot work out how to record a channel on the DVD player whilst I watch another channel on my external freeview box. I have tried all your advice but it still won't work, not sure what I'm doing wrong. I just can't find a way of selecting which device I wish to watch from and which one to record to.
I 'll keep on trying, it's no doubt something simply I'm not doing.
Thanks again for the advice

Cheers
Michael

What route does your TV ariel take?
The signal must go from input to freeview/DVD  then out  to DVD/freeview then TV (daisy chain).
Each device has what is called a 'passthrough' connection allowing signal to be received by both at same time.
Scart connections can do the same or freeview to scart 1 on TV DVD to scart 2 on TV.
If only 1 scart on TV use multiple scart input device, this allows (in my case) 4 inputs to 1 output.
If that makes sense?

If your DVD has built in Freeview then it should not be connected to the Freeview box but simply direct to the ariel.

I have just noticed you now call it a DVD player, if it is just a player it will not record, I assume this was just a typo?

Evening all,
Thanks for the advice, I now have cracked it thanks to you guys. It's much appreciated, I don't think I would have done it by myself. I had attached the DVD recorder to the TV via a scart but had stupidly attached the Freeview box to the DVD recorder  via a scart as-well and this seemed to be the problem as you have said the freeview box should also be attached to the TV via a scart as-well, I assumed an aerial would suffice. I am now happily recording one channel and watching another.
Sorry Guy it was a typo, it is a DVD recorder.

Once again guys thanks for all your help

Cheers
Michael :D
