Ancestry would have you believe it's Sholtone. If I'm not mistaken he says he was born in Irvine in 1851....and there is an OPR birth in Dundonald in 1819 that surely looks possible.
A neighbor search on the 1881 census disks pops up one person stating they were born Sholton, Dundonald, Ayrshire.
Janet MILTON M 46 F Sholton Dundonald, Ayr, Scotland
Hey it works for me!
Best wishes

Not sure I managed that!! I was trying to amend!!! His OPR birth is really in 1818. And he states on the 1851 census he was born in Irvine...not that he was born in 1851!! ;D

Doing a bit of a Google search, there is a Shewalton near Irvine. Also a Shewalton House in Dundonald. Not too far of a stretch from Shelton/Sholton.

Yup that is the same Anthony Smith I was looking at. You see you named your jpg image of the placename handwriting Anth Smith....so I simply went to Ancestry and searched for an Anth* Smith in Scotland and then viewed each year until I found the entry that says place of birth was something that resembled Sheltone/Sholtone. I found him in 1871.
Where born: Sholtone, Ayrshire
Registration Number: 575
Registration district: Renfrew
Civil Parish: Renfrew
County: Renfrewshire
Address: 7 Annisland
Occupation: Miner
Then armed with that data I searched for him in years previous to 1871 to see where else he might have stated a place of birth of and discovered Irvine and also a birth in Dundonald that could fit age wise and place wise. I'm not positive this is his birth mind you without further verification (ie finding his DC with parents named). I then added a random search using the 1881 disks to see if a decade later anyone else had ever used the place of birth of Shelton/Sholton/Sholtone etc. There were actually two in 1881 but one of those was the one I illustrated above. That independently put Sholton and Dundonald together without my wishing it so! Putting all those pieces together made me want to search an old map of the Dundonald area which I did. I fully concur with Hume's assessment that Shewalton is the likeliest location that meets all the criteria. Remember that the spelling was only in the enumerator's ear!!!!

Local knowledge of the area as most of the entries OPR and GROS were all phonetic , therefore every different person wrote things down differntly !!
