Hi
I've tried finding out information about the following streets and schools etc where my family lived, worked or attended over the last 150 years, but I've not been able to find any illustrations, photos etc about them. I'm trying to put together a family tree book for my family and would love to be able to show where my Mum's family lived over the years. I had a lot of information regarding a similar problem from Stan over my Dad's family in Sunderland, so I was hoping you guys might come up trumps with my Mum's side.
Any info would be most appreciated.

Hi Acorna, Wendy and Dave
Many thanks for all your replies. My Dad worked at Thornes toffee, it was in the centre of Leeds next to the Red/West Yorkshire Bus Station, I remember it as a child with the figures on top of the building, we have lots of battered old toffee tins knocking around the house, I think it was knocked down and replaced by a NCP car park, haven't been around that area of Leeds for years, just wondering if there was any photos of it in existence, the toffee factory, not the car park ;D.
Most of the references to Wortley refer back to the 1930's-50's when my late Mum was growing up. I know she said shortly before being evacuated to Lincs in WW2 that a bomb went off at the bottom of her road and there was a crater from one side to the other, not sure if this refers to Wortley Lane. Her cousin Iris had all the family photos I saw them about 25 years ago, and among them was a photo of my Granddad Walter and his book shop at 39 Wortley Lane, I've not heard from Iris from over 20 years and as she was elderly I assume she must have died and with no family too leave anything too the photos probably ended up in the bin or some Leeds Antiques shop, as usually happens :'( Never mind I'll check out the websites if there are any photos/illustrations of the same streets, it doesn't matter about being the right house number at least it will give me an insight into how it used to be.
Many thanks for all your help it's much appreciated.

Hi Libby and Eric
Many thanks for your replies, I'll be busy this afternoon searching through the geograph site and the Leeds map is very interesting it is surprising how many streets were still there when I was growing up, it's a pity that in the last 13 years since I left Leeds just how much has been redeveloped in the name of progres, not always to good effect :(.

Hi Julie,
My mum used to attend the Holy Family Church and she also was evacuated to Lincolnshire with my two elder brothers. A bomb also landed at the end of her street, but at the time my family lived on Armley Road, just higher up than Armley Jail. No-one was allowed onto the street until the bomb had been cleared so mum and dad had to go and stay with grandma in Wortley, off Green Lane.
Still have family living in that area.

Hi Swampduck
It just goes to show it really is a small world. I wonder if your Mum remembers the Lyon family Walter and Olive and their children Mavis, Jean and Alan? It's intriguing how our Mum's were both evacuated to Lincs, Before being evacuated Mum went to Green Lane, Mill Green and Whitehall Road schools, she was originally born in 2nd Avenue Armley but they moved to Wortley Lane in the 1930's.
I remember her talking about other families and relatives living around that area at that time including the Nicholls, Truelove, Dennison, Conway, Leng and Swift families.
It's sad searching on Google Earth and finding out how much has disappeared under dual carriageways around that area.
