Please can anyone suggest where I can find out more about my missing ancestor George STENTON?
He was born in Barnsley in 1876, the son of William Thomas Stenton and Mary Ann Lockwood.
I know he was close to the family and suddenly disappeared out of character never to be seen again. His mother Mary Ann, was very distressed, visited several large record offices around the country in the hope of tracking him down but found no trace.
I haven't found him on the 1901 census or in the death records.
Any suggestions on how I might find him would be great.

If he is an ancestor, then what was his last known sighting?
whom did he marry/ when & where were his kids born?

Hello Pauline,
George Stenton was the brother of my great grandmother, Hannah Stenton.
I found George appearing on the 1881 census aged 4 in Barnsley, and on the 1891 census aged 14 living in Wombwell with his family. I haven't found him on the 1901 census. I have no record of a marriage or children. I don't know if he may have gone to war (if there was one then) or may moved away or even murdered? I know that his family were distraught when he disappeared probably around 1900.
Thanks for your help.

Thank you Isobelruss, that is most interesting. Please can you tell me how you found this?
I am not 100% sure what George Stenton's occupation was my cousin thought it was something in the building trade. George was a pit pony driver in the Wombwell Colliery as a boy.
If this is George, I'll have to see if I can find his marriage.
Thanks again, this is intriguing!

Hello Pauline,
George Stenton was the brother of my great grandmother, Hannah Stenton.
So he wasn't an ancestor after all then?

Dee
Thanks Dee, I've just been looking at the 1911 census and think I may have found him:
George STENTON head 36 married (7 years) Miner Coal Hewer Barnsley Yorkshire
Emma STENTON wife 35 married
Edith STENTON 8
Else STENTON 4
Elizabeth Ann STENTON 1
If this is him, it appears that he was in the area in 1911 and married about 1904.
It is still a puzzle as to where he was around 1900.
Thanks for your suggestion.

Thanks Isobelruss, I have ordered a copy of the transcript and printed it out for reference. That looks like a useful website.

Hi
There is a marriage in 1903-Barnsley for George Stenton and one of the others on the same page is an Emma Scales.

Thank you Jane, I didn't know how to do the cross referencing to find the correct marriage. I'll go ahead and order this certificate as it sounds possible.
