Hi Emma & Pauline

There are military BMDs in Gibraltar on Findmypast (Home-Military-Armed Forces BMD 1764-1994); also Consular BMDs on there as well (Home-BMDs-Births British Overseas 1761-1994).

As Pauline says, it helps to have a little more detail; are you looking for native Gibraltans or births to British people posted or living in Gibraltar?

Kind regards
Gaie

I'll be looking for a Leveson Tilbrook born there about 1849. I know I'm going to need his marriage cert before I can find anything more out about him, but have just spent a small fortune on certs this week before I discovered this gentleman! I was just wondering where I would need to look.

Take it I'll have a better chance of finding him if his father was in the Armed-Forces then!?

Not necessarily, but it will indicate where to start checking in the first instance

You seem to be mainly asking about a Gibraltar baptism whereas the comments above are about a Gibraltar birth certificate.

However if it was a forces baptism it would probably have been carried out by the chaplain and so you need to start looking at the records of his fathe's regiment.  Otherwise you are looking for the registers of the church in which the ceremony was performed.  They may also help in the case of a forces baptism.

Many thanks for all replies!  :)

Once I get the marriage cert, it should give me his father's name and occupation and therefore whereabouts to start my search ie. forces or not. I'm thinking, rightly or wrongly, that his first name LEVESON is a surname being used as a Christian name, possibly his mother's?! :-\ He isn't on the 1871 census for England, and marries in 1873 in Lancashire so he must have arrived in England between 71 and 73.

Thanks again!

Emma

;D ;D How lucky am I!? Just did a search on Leveson Tilbrook on findmypast and the very first image I paid to view had him on!!

Doesn't give much away for birth year though I'm suspecting it must be 1850!

I now have Leveson's birth date of 23rd Nov. 1849

Baptised at King's Chapel, Gibraltar by J. Buchanan, Officer Chaplain to the Forces, on 7th Jan 1850.

His father was Charles Tilbrook, a Colour Sergeant in the 56th Regiment of Foot.

Does anyone know how I go about getting a birth certificate for him and if this would show his mother's maiden name? I'm not really sure how the forces bmds work!

You should be able to order the certificate in the normal way from the GRO at:

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

Using the option to order an overseas certificate.

I must admit that the last time I did it I ordered at the counter in St Catherines House.

Do I need a reference number for ordering? Oh, and would the birth have been registered in 1849 or 1850??  ???  I really don't know!!

I think the above is the reference number that you require.

G'day all,
I have a similar problem to soulsister. My 3xGreatgrandmother was Mary Lloyd and according to census data she was born some time around 1818 in Gibraltar (although in various census her birth place was also recorded as "Cibraltar",Jamaica and "On the sea").
She married Samuel Shipton in Horsley, Gloucestershire in 1837 and the marriage certificate records her Father as John Lloyd and the occupation is difficult to read but may be Soldier.
Does anyone have any ideas as to how I find out who John Lloyd was? I've already tried Findmypast and the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in Gibraltar.
Cheers

"My great grandfather was born in La Linia 10Th Feb 1887 "

La Linea is over the border in Spain... so it is there you need to look.
