Hi,
I am trying to locate some photographs of a grocers shop in Red Lion Street, Redditch. Benjamin Baylis has a shop from the census in 1841 through until after the 1881 census. I have found his son Francis had a shop in the same street through the 1891 and 1901 census it could possibly be the same one.
Thanks Keith.

Hi Keith,
Would this Benjamin be any connection to the one born c1813 in Bromsgrove? I ask this as the Benjamin in my tree had a father John who was a grocer.
Cheers,
Kelly.

Has anyone lost a Thomas Baylis who appears from nowhere in 1770 when he marries a Mary Ritson in Cumberland. He was a mariner and from then on the family stayed in the Maryport area and there are still traces of them there. There were no Baylis's in CUM before him.
Thomas was a g.g.grandfather of mine. My bit of the line moved to Liverpool and Baylis was used as a middle name for 3 generations after for some reason I cannot see. It was having an uncle William Baylis Paul that got me into F.H. in the first place.
Any suggestions appreiciated. Thanks Alan Williams

Hi Kells,
The Benjamin Bayliss i have is born about 1812 in Tardibigge and dies in 1888, he had a grocers shop in Red Lion street from about 1836 until his death when his son took it over until about 1904. I have not got Benjamin's parents so it is possible John was his father.

Surname distribution indicate BAYLISS (and variants) have a concentration in the south Midlands. I have a map on my BAYLISS webpage http://creativegraces.net/genindex/bayliss.html which illustrates this.
If anyone's trail leads them back to C17th/C18th Bidford on Avon, please get in contact. I'd like to connect my single family member to a greater one.
Regards,
Mark

Hi Keith,
It is quite possible we are looking at the same Benjamin - the only info I have is that my Benjamin was baptised 31 Dec 1813 in Bromsgrove, which is only a few miles from Tardebigg I believe. I have no info on other Benjamin's, not sure there were others at that time in the area, so it is a likely match, especially as he is a grocer, not uncommon to follow the father's profession, and if he is from my family, he is the eldest son.
Did your Benjamin marry Hannah? I have found this family in the census living in Edgbaston & Birmingham, Warwickshire, children John, Jane, Ann & Alfred Berry, but I did not see a Francis?
If you think it might be a link let me know and I would be happy to share more research.
Kelly :)

Alan, sorry I don't know of any connection to Cumberland or Liverpool Baylis's but perhaps someone else may - have you posted your own message on the pages relevant to those areas? Hope you have some luck with it.
Kelly.

Hi Mark,
Thanks for the link, it is interesting to see how the name is clustered in that region. I'm very interested in its origins as it was my mother's surname and there are few of them in our part of Australia.
Hope you make some connections, this site is a great way to get help.

Hi Folks,
Sorry to pour water on everything, there are BAYLIS(S), and variants all around here. Including a Benjamin BAYLIS, baptised in Studley, Warwickshire, just a few miles away, on the 6th September 1812 (IGI). Although in the 1871, aged 53, he does give Redditch as the parish of birth. There was also a birth in 1819 in Bromsgrove (IGI).
I don't know how well you know the Tardebigge/Redditch area but borders are a bit vague. Tardebigge isn't a village as such. It's just a place. Yes it has a church and a school, but the nearest hamlet is Tutnal. About a mile a way towards Bromsgrove is Finstall, which was in Stoke Prior parish, but in the Bromsgrove registration district. So trawl both St. Stephen's, Redditch, and St. Bartholmew's, Tardebigge registers.
Nobody has a Florence Elizabeth BAYLIS, born 1876, in Redditch do they?
Cheers
Mike

Dear Kells, thanks for the hint. I have a message on the CUM pages. I have traced all my Baylis related family in Liverpool but there were some Baylis's there already before mine got there in 1840 or so. There was a chemist and a milliner in the directories if I remember rightly.
The name Baylis did not continue in L'pool as it was my g.grandma who married a James Paul but Baylis was used as a middle name by the family for some sons and daughters for three generations at least. Bye Alan

Hi Keith.
I believe that Benjamin Baylis was my 5 x great grandfather. His son, Francis eventually took over the grocer's shop in Red Lion Street. Francis was a carpenter by trade and his son, Francis Augustus, was my great grandfather. My grandfather, George Frederick, died in 1927, so I never met him. His son, Eric, born in 1914, was my father.
Benjamin's wife was Georgianna Angelina (maiden name Harrington) born in Devonport. I believe that Benjamin was born in September 1912 in Studley and his mother's name was Ann. That's as far back as I have been able to go as yet. If you manage to get a photo of the shop in Red Lion Street, please let me know. I'd also be interested to know how your friend Martyn is related to Benjamin.

I have the BAYLIS family tree from myself way back to John Baylis 1709 marr Elizabeth Chambers, 30 Dec 1731, she came from BIDFORD-ON-AVON, WARWICKSHIRE.
for anyone connected to Benjamin Bayliss b.1812 marr. Georgiana Angelina Orange Collins Harrington, yes they did have a shop in Red Lion Stree, Redditch, Worc., and Francis their son took over the shop when Benjamin died.
dau of Francis, (Florence Elizabeth Baylis) was my grandmother.

Hi Marlene
Very interested to read your info regarding Benjamin Baylis and to see that you are descended from Francis's daughter, Florence. The only mention of Florence I've found is the 1880 Census record at Beoley Road and this gives her age as 24, but I can't see her mentioned in the 1871 Census record at Unicorn Hill, when she would supposedly be 14. I'd be particularly interested to know more about the Baylis family generations preceding Benjamin if you can let me have any more details.

Sarah Owen, Alcester. his father John b.1709, m. Elizabeth Chambers Bidford-on-Avon, on 30 Dec 1731.
Hop this is of use and if you come across anything else please let me know as this is as far as I have had time to get to at the moment due to other commitments.
Please let me know how this fits in with yours I have got most of this Baylis tree and there are a lot of people still about.

01Ivan - Have you established parents for John (1709) in Bidford yet?
I have established a bit of Bidford family tree since my last post, but also noted that a small number of BAYLISS are in the town (some come and go) who don't appear to be a part of the long-established (my) family from the early C17th.
Available to view here: http://creativegraces.net/genindex/bayliss.html
Comments and further connections welcome.

Hi Marlene
I think your G-father George Frederick was perhaps the younger brother of my GG-father, Francis Augustus. 1871 Census has your George Frederick, aged 14 (i.e. born ca. 1857-58) living Unicorn Hill with parents Francis 38 and Ann 38. Francis Augustus married Mary Ann Moberley 1871 and my G-father George Frederick born 1873.
Been to Warwick Records today. Parish register shows birth Benjamin as 02 Sept 1812 and baptism 06 Sept 1812, but listed as illegitimate son of Ann Baylis. How did you trace Ann's ancestors to Redditch and back to Bidford?
Regards
Gary

GaryYes my G-father George Frederick was the younger brother of Francis Agustus, (he married twice) (1) Mary Ann Mobberley & Mary Hatton. As it was about 15years ago that I got so far back there was really only the IGI, I will try and go through it all again this weekend now things have quietened down a little.George Frederick b.1853-1854, Francis Agustus 1855, Ann Elizabeth Florence 1856, George Frederick 1858, James Benjamin 1860, John 1862, Thomas William, 1864, Frederick Alfred Collins 1867, Victor 1869, Edgar 1872, Edith Lusiana 1876,Frank Joseph 1878. You can see why I have not investigated all the family 12 in that generation. 11 in Florence Elizabeth`s my grandmother`s generation.Marlene

Gary,
A cousin of my mothers copied all the Baylis bap.marr.& deaths from the Mormon Library at Crabbs Cross, Redditch, when it was open, it has been closed for a good many years now, but I am working on it.
