Title: MADDEN and GRICE family in Athlone
Post by: martin305 on Tuesday 17 February 09 23:16 GMT (UK)
Hello to All

I am looking for info on my GT GT Grandmother MARY MADDEN born 1858/9 in Athlone on the Roscommon side of the town. She married a William Grice born in Birmingham England I believe he was in the british army based at the garrison in Athlone they both moved to Birmingham in England by the time of the 1881 uk Census.

Any info on the MADDEN family would be gratefully received I will also be travelling to Ireland in May 09 to visit Athlone so any pointers where I may look would also be gratefully received.

many thanks

Martin Thompson

Hi Martin,I don't know if you already know (but just in-case you don't) the area around the Barracks & Railway station comes under the  parish of ST Mary's,I had a look in Griffith's Valuation & see there is a John Madden listed for this area (living near the Barracks)I wonder is there a connection there for you? Good luck in your research regards Nipy

Ah Martin I should have also said that Athlone is a very nice Town & very intersting ,it is some years since I visited the Town but I'm sure it's still there  a good museum in the old castle just over the main bridge as you leave the town + if you carry on past the castle on the river there is a great oldie worldie pub well worth popping in for a Glass of Guinness (oh by the way they say it's the oldest pub in Ireland -- but I didn't really believe that)  once again Good luck & enjoy your trip -Nipy

Nothing further than that.
Found this little 'tit-bit' while searching;

As far as I can see the first Smyth given the christian name GRICE was about 1672, the great grand son of Richard Smyth and Mary Boyle. It is unlikely that there were any earlier Grice Smyth becuase this one's first name presumably came from the surname of his mother ALICE GRICE.
