Title: BAILEY Family - Ipswich
Post by: alisonlbutler on Tuesday 17 February 09 15:35 GMT (UK)
I am trying to find out about my GG Grandad and grandmother. I have found them on the 1891 census and also 1901. Their names were James Robert Hazelwood Bailey and Elizabeth Bailey (nee Goldsmith).

They were bakers and my mother seems to think that they ran/owned had a shop.
Does anyone know where I can find out about this?
The address on the census's is 52 and 50 Orford Street Ipswich (St Matthews). It took me a while to figure out it was Orford and not Oxford!

James died in 1901 but his eldest son has an occupation of baker in the 1901 census. I'm assuming he carried on the tradition.

I have been going around in circles trying to find out about this shop.
There is a off-license (I think) at 50 orford road, could that have once been the bakery?

If anyone has any information and can help me I would be forever grateful.
At the moment most of my research is done by computer because I live in Hertfordshire.

Thanks again.

Alison

Hi

Have you tried the historical directories website?

http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/

Kelly's Directory of Cambs, Norfolk & Suffolk, 1892 lists a James Robert Bailey as a baker at 52 Orford Road in Ipswich.

Hi Alison

Is this the birth entry for James Bailey?

James Robert Hazelwood Bailey
Apr-May-Jun 1860
District : Thingoe
Suffolk
4a
??

The page number is illegible.

An IGI submitted record has him born on the 16th March 1860 and marrying Elizabeth Goldsmith in 1882.

THANK YOU ALL.

Thank you so much for the replies, I'm so excited to have that advert, that is amazing! Thank you suffolk*sue. How did you find it?

Ben - I will try the link thank you for that and I assume that is the biruth entry. The information I have is his DOB is 16/3/1860 in Whepstead, so would Thingoe be the registration district?

If anyone else has any information that would be greatly appreciated.

I look through the records and have found another address for him in Crown Street.

Does anyone know where I could find historic photos?

We have several books of old photographs of Ipswich at home, David Kindred and Robert Malster are names to look out for.

I will try and check the books later today and let you know if I find anything - you can then perhaps order same through inter-library links.

There are some historic photographs of the Over Stoke area of Ipswich at http://www.bbc.co.uk/suffolk/history/features/ click on Over Stoke Gallery and on Going Over Stoke.  Different part of the town, but gives you an idea of Ipswich past.

Sense of Place Suffolk is behind with its re-launch, but there may be photographs on there http://www.senseofplacesuffolk.co.uk/

Yes, the Thingoe district around Bury St Edmunds includes the parish of Whepstead.

Regarding Orford and Oxford, we also have a large village called Yoxford and the railway line from Ipswich runs through there.  However, the station was built a mile or two down the road from Yoxford at Darsham.
The reason being that Yoxford could be confused with Oxford.

Thingoe is the correct Registration for Whepstead and the complete reference needed to order the birth certificate is;

James Robert Hazelwood BAILEY
Apr - Jun Quarter 1860
Thingoe Registration District
Volume 4a Page 443

Certificates can be ordered online.

I dont know if this is of any help to you but the Kelly's Directory of 1929 gives two Bailey families living in Orford Street ( a small street of about 24 premises)

No 21      Bailey Geo.Wm. & Son.    Upholstrs.
No 43      Bailey Rt. Chas.   Painter

I thought they may be connected to your Bakers.

Alison,

I believe J R Bailey is also a relative of mine, my Great Grandfather.

My Grandmother was a Bailey before marriage.

I have in my possession a book which is signed on the inside cover -  J R Bailey, 50 Orford Street.

I hope this is of interest to you.

J R Bailey Baker was my Great Grandfather.
His son Ernest moved to Frinton-On-Sea and was my Grandfather. Unfortunately he died at the age of 45. My mother has in her possession his death certificate.
Percy J Bailey was my uncle. I believe that Alison Butler's mother, if her name is Linda, is my cousin.
          John E G Bailey.

Hello-

From your post Alison Butler it looks like we have the same Bailey ancestors. Drop me an email and we can compare notes.

Thanks,

I have an entry for John Robert Bailey marrying Sarah Jane Ribbans 4Q 1871 at Ipswich. This fits very well with the baker you are researching. Sarah Jane was baptised Sep 17 1852 at St Matthews Ipswich. She would seem to be the daughter of Charles Ribbans, b. c 1821 at Gt Blakenham, listed successively as a shopkeeper, milkman and publican in Ipswich in various directories; he died in 1882. His wife was Sarah Rozier, b. c 1819 [62 in 1881 census], married c 1842 at Needham Mkt, and buried in Ipswich cemetery Jan 11 1899. Certainly among their children is an Edwin Charles Ribbans, born 1844 at Needham Mkt, a well-known ironmonger and tinsmith in Ipswich; private residence 36 Fore St.  Edwin was married to another Bailey, Frances Rhodes Bailey, Sep 1864 at Ipswich. They had a number of children, one of whom is named Edwin Bailey Ribbans, born 1Q 1876 at Needham Mkt.

I hope this may be of interest to some of you. Keep up the correspondence if you find it useful.

Best wishes,
Geoffrey/grib
