Hi,
Does anyone out there have any connection to the following family: I would really like to find out more about the back ground of John Davis and to make contact with any family that might be still living.
John Davis Born 1810 Dawlish, Devon Carpenter, Married 10 Feb 1827 Devon, England to Ann Burridge Luckes (daughter of Thomas Luckes and Ann Perriam) Bap 27 Jan 1807 Littleham, Devon. Ann and John had the following known children:

living with the family at Back of Lawn Terrace in Dawlish
Occupation Labourer. Walter came to South Australia, died
1873 leaving a wife and 3 living children and 1 deceased.
2. Elizabeth Davis Born 1834 Dawlish Occupation Lace Maker
3. Konhania Davis Born 1839 Dawlish Occupation Lace Maker
I have found her name listed also as Kosahemia and as
Monalemia.
4. Dorcus Luckes Davis Born March 1841 Dawlish Died June
1841 Bath Aged 41 Occupation 1851 Lace Maker 1881 a

Hi Deb,
Thank You so much for taking the time to look up that information.
Your first post refers to John Davis and Ann Burridge Luckes and their family. Yes I do believe that Euphemia is Konania, you might wonder why the change? I think it had something to do with the name of Ann's sister.
But your second post that refers to the children of John Stockham Davis and Ann nee Wooldridge who were also in Dawlish their children: All Baptised in St Gregory Dawlish.
Elia Davis c 9 Nov 1828, Albert James Davis c 21 Aug 1831,
Ann Elizabeth Lucas Davis c 3 Nov 1833, Monhemlia Lidia Lock Davis c 12 Mar 1836, Thomas Davis Born 1844, Henry Davis Born 1847/8.
I beleive that the two John's are quite closely related but I have not found out how. I also have not been able to find parents of John who was Konhania's father. I would really like to find background information on this family.
Thank you also for letting me know that the other children were living with their Aunts.

Hi again
I was hoping that Frances Westcott,3, in 1841 living with Monhania was related to John Davis' family ...she's not but thought I would post this just in case you don't have it.
In 1851 Frances is with her parents, William and Lydia Westcott in Chapel Street, Dawlish.

William Westcott = Lydia Luckes

Hi Deb,
Thank you once again, no I did not have that information, I have not been down the track of tracing the Luckes line. I had a small tree sent to me a short while ago, that gave me Ann's family line, such as parents and siblings, so I had been content with them till now.
I had a private email yesterday sent to me. This is what it said, I have no idea if it is correct or not. There was no email address attached to it. So I could not send a reply of thanks.
Margaret,
My name is Mary Davis, I have no connection to your family line what so ever. But thought I would send this to you as it was sent to me. I think this is your family line.
John Davis who had married Ann Burridge Luckes, who was born in Dawlish, Devon Abt 1810. John was actually born 6 Nov 1812, Baptised 1 Dec 1812 at St Gregory, Dawlish.
He was son of William Davis + Mary Ann Mudge married 25 Dec 1809 St Gregory's, Dawlish. They had William Mudge Davis 1810, Ann Mudge Davis 1811, John Davis 1812, Henry Stockham Davis 1814, Edwin Davis 1815, Charlotte Davis 1818, George Davis 1821, Charles William Davis 1823, Helen Mary Davis 1830, + Emma Sophia Davis 1833 all Baptised St Gregory's Dawlish.
William Davis was baptised in 1785 at Mamhead, he was the eldest son of John Davis who married Susanna Braddon 26 Dec 1784 at Mamhead. This John Davis died in 1811 at Dawlish, leaving a will total of 450 pounds. John Davis was a Builder, his wife although listed as Braddon, her Baptism has her listed as Susannah Bradden 12 July 1761 at Mamhead, her parents William Braddon and Sussanna Bussell.
I can tell you no more information about the Davis family line,
as that is all I was sent and they did not tell me their name or why they sent it to me. I suppose it had something to do with the fact, that I had been making enquires about the places of Dawlish and Mamhead for my son's school project, and I had said my husband was John Davis and my name being Mary, they thought I was related to the above family.
I do hope this helps you find your complete family.
Regards Mary Davis
Well Deb, if Mary is viewing these pages I thank her for her thoughtfulness in sending this. If it does turn out to be my family I will be very greatful indeed.

Hi Deb,
I used the freeBMD's to look up Konhania's birth, but found nothing I also searched for Euphemia, and other strange names, but no luck there also.
Interesting fact that I did find in Sep Q 1839, there is a Maria Mudge Davis Newton Abbot 10 153. After the email I recieved from Mary Davis yesterday, this entry is quite interesting. If I had not recieved the email I would not have given it a second glance.
Now I am wondering was John's daughter named Maria Mudge, and as she grew up and was possibly facinated by her Aunts name of Monhamia changed her name to be more like it, and became Konhania? But if this is not our family line then Konhania or Euphemia who ever she really was simply was never registered by her family.

Hi haselbury
How wonderful ;D ...although we do need to follow up to try to confirm :-\
In 1861 I did find Ann Davis nee Luckes living next door to a Mary Davis , who was much older. I was going to post it later as I got sidetracked today .
I had also looked for Euphemia/Konhania's birth to no avail .... It might be worth your while to purchase the birth cert of Maria Mudge Davis to confirm her parentage.
I will reread the details of your email and see what can be found/confimed.
Mary is most generous ... :D
deb
added ...I see the Stockham name ....maybe e can connect to the other Stockham Davis
-
Hi Deb,
I have had a thought about Maria Mudge Davis, it is quite possible that she may have been the youngest daughter of William Davis and his wife Mary Ann Mudge. As Mary Ann Mudge was Baptised at West Teignmouth, Devon on 31 July 1791, and would have been around 48 or 49 when Maria was born. This would make her the sister of John Davis married to Ann nee Luckes.
William + Mary Ann's first two had Mudge in the middle of their names, so why not their last?
At this stage I do not want to get a certificate that might turn out to not be related to me at all. For all I know, the Maria Mudge Davis may belong to a completely different family altogether. I think I need more evidence, before I buy the certificate, as money is a bit tight at the moment. I just cannot justify wasting it.

Hi
I have been looking around again ;D
I have just noticed on the 1841 census that 'next door' to Your John and Ann Davis there is a family who has Susan Davis , 75, widow living with them .
Thomas LORAM 30 j. Tailor
Amelia 30
George 8
Georgeana 5
Charlotte 3
Mary 3 months
Susan Davis 75 widow ... nee Bradden who married John Davis 26 Dec 1784 ?
The same Loram family are living next door to your Davis family in 1851. (now have another child Emma)
The loram children's christenings are on IGI ..couldn't find a marriage of Thomas Loram but did find this;
Amelia DAVIS = Thomas BORAM
23 APR 1832 Saint Sidwell, Exeter, IGI extracted
Amelia DAVIS d/o William Davis and Ann
11 FEB 1810 Saint Mary Steps, Exeter (IGI ext.)
so could Amelia Davis be the sister of your John? Or is she just a close relative?

Thanks Deb,
I did some looking myself, and found the following information: on FreeBMD's
Amelia Loram died Newton Abbot 5b 74 Sep Q 1852
Thomas Loram remarried Sep Q 1860 Newton Abbot 5b 205
to Mary Rich
Thomas Loram died aged 69 Newton Abbot 5b 89
Dec Q 1878.
Perhaps in view of this, if Amelia was John's sister, his own mother Mary could have adopted Amelia's daughters, or it was supposed to be grand-daughter in the census but the grand was left out maybe by the transcriber.
I wonder if their was any children from his second marriage?
Did they still live in Dawlish?

Hi Haselbury
In 1871 Thomas Loram and 2nd wife Mary (49, Chudleigh) is with daughter Annie aged 10.
ahh just found them in 1861 under the name LoraN

Thomas Loram head 52 mar tailor
Mary wife 37 b Chudleigh
Ann dau 4 months b dawlish
Ann Payne sister in law wid 44 nurse b Chudleigh

Hi Deb,
Thank you for that, the list keeps growing.
I went back over what Mary Davis sent to me. In her family list she said, John Davis who married Ann Burridge Luckes, and John was son of William who married Mary Ann Mudge, and William was son of John who married Susannah nee Braddon.
This entry below I just received, it came from Fred Brooks, who said he hoped it helps. Another without return address.
Thanks Fred if you read this.
The John Davis and Susannah nee Braddon had the following children:
1. William Davis c 27 May 1785 Mamhead
2. Thomas Davis c 7 Mar 1787 Mamhead
3. Charlotte Davis c 23 Oct 1792 Mamhead
4. Mary Anne Davis c 23 June 1794 Mamhead
5. Harriot Davis c 27 Dec 1798 Mamhead
6. Amelia Davis c 29 Dec 1801 Kenn
7. John Stockham Davis c 1 July 1803 Kenn
8. Henry Davis c 1 Dec 1808 Kenn
haselbury, could the William Davis married to Anne, who were parents to Amelia born 1810, be the brother of John Davis married to Susannah.
Fred Brooks
Deb, Fred Brooks, made me think about it all, and there could also be another explanation to it all. In the 1841 census, it does not give family relationships. You listed Susan Davis 75 Widow living with the Loram family, with Amelia Loram 30. As Thomas was only 30, I wonder if this Amelia is actually the daughter of John and Susannah, and that she lowered her age. Besides the ages in the 1841 were rounded down any way by some five years.
I really wish that there was some way to find, newspaper death notices or Obituaries for these people, as it may put things into perspective.

Hi Deb,
Thanks for your last two posts. But now I am confused, as John and Susannah's son William married Mary Ann Mudge, and they did not have an Amelia. Unless the marriage to Mary Ann was a second one for William.
I do not know if that is our John or not, There does not appear to be any Joseph or Hannah's in this family line.
haselbury
-
Hi Deb,
What was I thinking?, it could not even be a second marriage for our William, as he never married Mary Ann Mudge until 25 Dec 1809 St Gregory's Dawlish. Amelia was Born 1810. I still think that her father William might very well turn out to be John's brother.

Hi haselbury
eekkk it's all so confusing withe the same names and same places.
Amelia's death cert would state her age at death.
it seems we have 2 Amelia's
1810 d/o William and Ann
1801 d/o John and Susannah
Amelia in 1841 = 30yrs
Amelia = Thomas Loram 1832... eldest son George bc 1833
arrghh ..she could be either of the 2.
will check for an Amelia born 1801 in the 1841

Hi Deb,
Just received another email, this one was from Petronella de Maddleworth, from Bombay, in India. I tried to send an email message of thanks, but it came back with server not found. This is what Petronella had to say.
haselbury,
My husband Conglad is a native born Indian, but his cousin who's surname is Davis was born in Dawlish Devon England.
His family returned to India where he was registered + Baptised. I was inquiring personally to a man who was named Trent, in London in 2001, as he said he knew a lot about a Davis Family from Dawlish, Devon. His reply to me, was, he had no relations that were of the Indian race. Then last year in August, I received a copy of the Davis Family of Devon from Matilda sister of Trent, who said he had past away in Jan 2008 in Japan. Matilda went on to say, Trent was not a genealogist, and some of his associations maybe wrong, so it will need checking out. This family line is not mine, I do believe it belongs to you. I saw your posts and all your long communications with deb from u.s.a., so I thought this might help you both. I do so wish it was mine, you are so lucky. Petronella.

I could not believe what Petronella sent. I think I still am in a kind of shock!

-
deb,
I did not have the middle names for Amelia's children. I also only have the entries from the census that you posted on here for 1841 and 1861 for the Loram family.
John Davis's Will only mentions his wife Susanna and his youngest son Henry Davis. He willed that his remaining property of goods, chattels and effects, with all lands or other property to be divided equally between all his children, after his youngest son Henry Davis, shall attain the age of 21 years. (At the time of his death in 1811 Henry Davis was between 3 + 4 years old.)

I missed the obvious .... :-\
I didn't check/type the 1851 census
Transcribed as Lerum:

AMELIA wife 48 b Dawlish.... bc 1802/3 ...much closer to 1801 now :D
Georgina dau 15

Mary A dau 10
Emma dau 7

deb,
Thanks for that, I think that may confirm that Amelia is Susanna's daughter.
I wonder if Amelia's other sister's Charlotte, Mary Anne and Harriot married and had children?
How do I confirm that William Davis + Joan Gale are John's parents, as they would have died long before any of the census were taken?
So many questions??, is there answers to them all.

Hi haselbury
I have been going round in circles this morning looking for anything on Amelia's sisters . As yet I cannot link them to anyone on the censuses . :-\
I have however been looking into Matilda;

poor Matilda didn't seem to have much luck with husbands :'( :-\
-
deb,
Thanks, I have made a note of that, and thanks for doing all that hard work, tracking down the correct Matilda.
I'm sorry I do not have anything to add today, as it was my Birthday yesterday 24th Feb. My husband took me out during the day, and then again last night. I was only home for the short time I had to post reply 31. But I have already started to search today, I will see what I can find as well.

Hi. I have come across this thread by google.
I am researching the son of Mary Jane Oldfied who was born before her marriage to George Vaughn Davis.
1891 She is with her sons family
Address: 12, Besley Street, Streatham
1881 Address: 4, Colmer Rd, Streatham
She is with son Phillip
1871 She is with her parents described as married and using the name Davis but her son Phillip has reverted to Oldfield
Address: Cornwall Street, Stoke Damerel, Devonport
1861 Address: 6, Fellowes Place, Stoke Damerel, Devonport
DAVIS, Philip is a visitor to his grandparents
George and Mary are at Wilton Place, Stoke Damerel, Devonport
The marriage is
Marriages Mar 1855 as you know
Davis George Vaughn Stoke D 5b 535
Oldfield Mary Jane Stoke D. 5b 535
Phillip was born c 1851 after the census
1851 Address: Fore Street, Kingsbridge with her parents and siblings.
I then found a second marriage for George
?????
Marriages Mar 1864
Bartlett Eliza Ann E Stonehouse 5b 570
Burgoyne John Stoke D 5b 570
Clatworthy Elizabeth Peneluna Stoke D 5b 570
Davis George Vaughan Stoke D. 5b 570
Williams Ann Stoke D 5b 570
Did they divorce or was it bigamy? I have not found George after 1861 census as yet and wondered if you had found anything?
LK
-
In my Research I found Mary Jane Davis wife of George Vaughan Davis in the Free BMD Deaths - June Quarter 1856 Newton Abbott 5b 97.
I do not know anything about any children fron Mary Jane Oldfield. perhaps you have the wrong one in the Census.
I found George Vaughan Davis in the Free BMD's Deaths - June Quarter 1893 Bedminster 5c 454 George was 57 years old.
George Vaughan Davis Remarried Ann Williams March Quarter 1864 at Stoke Damerel 5b 570
haselbury
-
Have you actually looked at censuses I posted?
They are pretty clear.
LK
-
Just to make it clearer
1851 Address: Fore Street, Kingsbridge
OLDFIELD, William Head Married M 48 1803 Rope Maker Kingsbridge
OLDFIELD, Mary Wife Married F 44 1807 Shoe Binder Foway Cornwall
OLDFIELD, Mary J Daughter Unmarried F 18 1833 Kingsbridge Devonshire
OLDFIELD, Elizabeth Daughter Unmarried F 16 1835 Boot Binder Kingsbridge Devonshire
OLDFIELD, William G Son M 9 1842 Scholar Devonport
OLDFIELD, James Son M 1 1850 Kingsbridge
As Phillip was born before the marriage he has the name Oldfield.
In 1861 George and Mary are in Stoke Dameral and Phillip is visiting his grandparents. He has now taken the name of his mother's husband.
1861 Address: 6, Fellowes Place, Stoke Damerel, Devonport
OLDFIELD, William Head Married M 57 1804 Rope Maker Kingsbridge Devon
OLDFIELD, Mary Wife Married F 53 1808 Folvey Cornwall
OLDFIELD, John Son Unmarried M 11 1850 Kingsbridge Devon
DAVIS, Philip Visitor Unmarried M 9 1852 Kingsbridge Devon
In 1871 Mary Jane Davis is back home with her parents and Phillip has reverted to Oldfield.
1871 Address: Cornwall Street, Stoke Damerel, Devonport
OLDFIELD, William Head M 70 1801 Devon
OLDFIELD, Mary Wife F 62 1809 Cornwall
DAVIS, Mary J Daughter F 37 1834 Devon
OLDFIELD, Philip Grandson M 19 1852 Devon
after this time they both revert to Oldfield. You have found the death of a Mary Jane Davis but it does not say she was the wife of George Vaughn Davis.
LK
-
Lk,
I cannot help you with anything about Mary Jane, as I have no more than I have already stated. Free BMD's do not give relationship information. As Mary Jane was Married to a Davis not in my direct line, I have not obtained the Certificate for her death. My direct line comes from George Vaughan Davis's Father Thomas's Brother William and his wife Mary Ann Mudge. As their are so many in this family, it would not be viable for me to obtain every Certificate pertaining to not direct line.

Walter Davis b1829 is my great great grandfather.
I have just begun doing my family tree and I want to thank those who have provided me with so much information in this thread. Much confirms what I already had, but there is so much more that I have learnt.
Thank you all.
