Post by: monks13 on Monday 16 February 09 21:32 GMT (UK)
Trying to find out anything about Shillady/Shilady from The area Dumgooland Co Down.
My Grt Grandfather came from there sometime in the mid 1800's (i think)
and settled in Dalry Ayrshire where my Grandfather was born c1885.

Do try for the apparently more common spelling Co Down spelling Shilliday at Ros davies great websitehttp://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~rosdavies/SURNAMES/S/SheSho.htm#shi is the parish Drumgooland, the same place as drumgolland, I notic ethere is another at Loughinisland.
Success in your venture, Jim

I have Shilladays in my tree who also used the surname Sheridan so it would be worth trying this alternative spelling.

Hi

I came upon this thread by chance. It's 10 years too late I know but.....My maternal great grandfather William Davidson was from Drumgooland , His granddaughter Mabel Mawhinney married a Shilliday, and as a child we would often pop in to see the family who lived just outside Rathfriland on the road up to Spelga Dam. I don't have detailed notes to hand but if you're still looking after all this time I might be able to help

Matt

Just found my cousin's notes on the Shilliday connection (written this year)

Mabel Mawhinney married Samuel John Shilliday. They had a daughter Joan who married Felix Magin

Mabel was born 31/8/1919 and died 3 Aug 2014 (?) at Rathfriland

A Search like this on

will get any BDM Registrations for them up to 1922

Change Surname if one wants.

The Irish Government BDM website

https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/civil-search.jsp

has 3 stages to it as per attachment

Those with Returns Page No  don't have Images yet but one can check back every now and then to see if any have been updated even once every 6 months!

If one knows the names from a Marriage e.g.  "about 1870"  just put Name in, Tick Marriage box and use Year Range 1868 to 1872  leaving District  blank if unknown!

The Captcha and Sign in page are all part of process the Irish Government BDM website and do not take anyone to any other website!

There is a hardware shop in Castlewellan called Shillidays and it's been there since 1926

As far as I know the owner isn't young - so might be able to help you out
