Could someone tell me what regiments, and why, the british army were in N.Nigeria (kano and dumjari) 1905/6

No British regiments that I'm aware of. But there were detached British officers and specialists with local forces.
What are these vague mentions of regiments you have?

Thanks for replying. The letters mention skirmishes with 'the natives' and a few that they wanted to keep quiet! Names mentioned are Col mc clintock - Seaforths, Lecker - 14th Hussars, Hubert - 5th Fusiliers and welsh fusiliers. It seems they were based at Kans and there was a lot of trekking involved!

There was a lot of railway building in N Nigeria at the time. Sometimes officers would get leave of absence from their regiments to do some job or another. I have a photograph album of future VC winner A M Lafone who was 'resident' in the area without resigning his Yeomanry commission.
