Title: Can anyone help fill in the gaps with my Tedders in Windsor pls?
Post by: suitcase on Saturday 14 February 09 23:26 GMT (UK)
So here's the story:

Charles Henry Tedder married Jane Sarah Simmonds on 1 May 1880 in Clewer, New Windsor.

They had 8 children (all born Windsor):
Edith Sarah b 1880
Charles Henry b1882
George Mortimer b1884
Emma Louise Martha b1885
Harry Guildford b1893
Jane Ann b1894 (died 1900)
John Frederick b1897
Alfred Stephen C b 1899

In the 1881 census Charles is a soldier in barracks at Regents Park and Jane is living with her mother (Martha Simmonds - Jane was illigitimate so no father) and baby Edith Sarah in Windsor

In 1891 Charles and Edith Sarah are living with Charles's parents (Charles and Ann) in Windsor. Jane is an 'inmate' at the Elizabeth Fry refuge in Hackney (having looked this up it seems she must have committed some sort of crime to have been sent there, I need to get to the prison records at Kew at some stage to see if I can find out what - given the gap in birth dates for the children, I assume this happened around 1885/6)
Charles Henry jnr is an 'inmate' at a boys industrial school in Bath, Emma LM (at just 5yrs old) is an 'inmate' at a girls industrial school in Bath, and George M is a boarder with the Cutter family in Oxford.
No idea why Charles sent the 3 younger children away rather than having them with him and his parents...seems very sad.....

In 1901 I have Jane and Emma LM in Windsor where Jane is a caretaker for a property there.
BUT I cannot find any trace of Charles H snr or jnr, Edith Sarah, Harry G, John F or Alfred S
Can anyone help find them?

In 1911 Edith Sarah reappears - married to Henry Ryan and living in Lambeth. Harry G is living with them.
Charles H Snr is living in Windsor with John F, Alfred, and a granddaughter Kathleen Annie (born 1899 in Lambeth - I am thinking most likely illigitimate daughter of Edith Sarah...)

But now I can find no trace of Jane, and no death records for a Jane Tedder between 1901 and 1911 - can anyone help with that?

Such a strange marriage - it seems they actually never lived together in the same place....

Anyway, if anyone can help with Charles H Snr and children in 1901 and/or Jane in 1911 or her death, would be much appreciated

Thanks in advance

The Times, Friday, Apr 29, 1887; pg. 9; Issue 32059; col F
"...Yesterday at the Windsor Petty Sessions, Jane Tedder was again charged with setting fire to Clewer-cottage Spital, the residence of Miss Augusta Bulkeley; and Charles Tedder, her husband, lately a police-constable, and Martha Thorn, her mother, were charged with being accessories before and after the fact. There were other charges of stealing property of the value of £60. Tedder, who was a constable in the Windsor police force, was put in the house as a caretaker by Miss Bulkeley, and on the morning of the 15th the house was found by Police-constable Collins to be on fire. With great difficulty he got admission and with Mrs Tedder's assistance put out the fire. Tedder was himself away at the time, seeking for work. In the course of the day Miss Bulkeley's agents went to the house, and found a fire smouldering in the smoking-room, and that attempts had been made to set fire to the house in four different places. There were also articles missing which it would take £100 to replace. The prisoners were committed for trial."

Fantastic! Thank you both so much....I love the Times article - although rather surprising to find one great grandmother is an arsonist and petty criminal!

The 1901 census I had for George M but had simply not been able to find the others - thought I'd tried every variation of Tedder...but there you go

Interesting about Martha - she was def Simmonds when Jane was born and no father given, must have married Mr Thorn later on - I'll look into it

Thanks again to you both...

Thanks Jane.

I found what I am assuming is the marriage on FreeBMD - Martha Simmonds and George Thorn Sep 1881 in Kensington

And Martha's death in Lambeth in Dec 1915 aged 85

So looks like it's all coming together. I'm fascinated by the Times article and will see if I can find out more about Jane's crimes and where she ended up after the trial...I think prison records are at Kew -will need to make a trip there to have a look

Thanks again to all for your assistance,

there was another daughter of Jane Tedder ,her name was Eva Maude Tedder born 1888 in reading ,the only one not born in Windsor
She is living with Grandparents  martha and George in 1891 age 3 but she is listed as Eva M Tayler not sure if this is typing error
In 1901 she is a servant with sister Edith and in 1910 she married George Edawrd Deane
I will get birth cert to make sure ,its odd she was born in reading and the others all in windsor although later she puts her birth as windsor
I think jane is listed in the 1911 census as mrs teddes cook in windsor
I have the birthday book of Eva Maud Tedder in which she has put Gran died in 1915 this would have been Martha Thorn i think
she has put mother died 1949 aged 81 although it looks like she was 89

Thanks for posting Anna

Since my original post I'd actually got in touch (via Ancestry) with a cousin who descends from Harry Tedder  (I'm descended from Emma Louise Martha) and she had helped with some of this info, including the birth cert and thus the revelation that Eva was born in prison. It is indeed very sad...

Are you also related?

anna - have emailed you  :)

meantime just to say am sure this must be 'our' Jane as dates are right and born Dedworth is too much of a co-incidence for there to be another Jane Tedder born there....thanks for this, I had been really struggling to find her in 1911!

I'm not sure if this is still active, I have just found this website, I have been trying to find out about the tedder side of my family, from the information I have found, and read it would appear I could be in the right place. My great grandfather was Charles tedder jnr.  After leaving bath he moved to Wales to work on a farm. I have some other information, but not sure if this is still active

Hi there,

I still get notifications when something pops up on here!

So are you descended from Charles Henry b1882? I have a fair bit of info on this line if so. Are you on Ancestry? If so let me know user name and we can link up there - my tree is all on there. Or via email if easier - message me on here with your email address

All the best

Charles's sister Emma Louise Martha Tedder was my great grandmother

You'll know I expect that Charles married Jane Davies on 13 Nov 1909 in Llandygwydd, Cardiganshire, Wales, United Kingdom (FreeBMD Cardigan, Vol 11b, p3 - FreeBMD is a great source of birth/marriage/death records if you haven't discovered it already)

They had 5 children:
Hannah Jane or Nana Tedder 1910–1995
Sidmore (Sydmor)Charles Tedder 1912–2000
Harry George Tedder 1913–1994
Evan D (Danny) Tedder 1915–1976
Sarah Emma (Sally Tedder) 1919–1946

Am assuming one of the above is your grandmother/grandfather?

Happy to share what I have with you if you want to message me your email address
all the best
