Would someone be kind enough to look up Annie (Anne) Elizabeth Smith c1844/45 for me please. Both Chelsea and Westminster were given as her place of birth and father's name Richard. Many Thanks. Rose
-
I haven't been able to find Annie but interestingly enough there is a family by the name of Smith
Father Richard Mother Sarah
living in St Jude's parish Chelsea (poss now under Paddington)
children born after 1843 were listed as born Chelsea but no Annie, there is a 4 year gap, between 1843 and 1847, where Annie might have been born if this is the right family, did this child survive
Just a thought

Hello Louisa,
Thank you for the look-up. Yes Annie (Anne) did survive. I have her in later census under her married name. She consistently gave her place of bith as Chelsea or Westminster and year of birth as 1844/5. She was married in Kensington and it is from that certificate that we get the name of the father, Richard.
Best wishes,
-
Rose
What occupation did she state for her father on her marriage and when precisely did she marry?

Valda

Hello Valda,
Annie Smith married George Noyce (Sept Q 1866 Kensington). She probably died between 1881 and 1891 and George re-married
Hi Gobbo,
I too have looked several times at the reference you have found. My hesitation is that my cousin sent off for that certificate stating a reference; father's name Richard. The GRO responded that the Annie Smith with that reference did not have a father's name as Richard quoted. Hence my hesitation to send off for it.
George Noyce married for a second time, as a widower, to a Jane Ware (Kensington Dec Q 1892.

Hi Rose
What occupation did she state for her father on her marriage?
We really need this information as for instance Ann(ie) could be adjusting her age down after her marriage to bring it in line with her husband's - her age has yet to be confirmed, two censuses don't prove it was actually accurate.
Is the knowledge that Annie had a middle name based on her children's birth certificates as you haven't yet found her death registration and she married using only the name of Annie?
George Noyce married Elizabeth Jane Ware in Kensington registration district in 1892 but they appear as married in the 1891 census in Kensington (where George and Annie were living in the 1871 and 1881 censuses). Despite the age issue (and mistakes were made on death certificates) that really only leaves the Fulham death registration as a possibility.

Hi Rose
The certificate of marriage to George Noyce should show the name and occupation of Annie's father and this information may make it easier to find the family in 1851.
Meanwhile, Valda's comment about her age reminded me that one of my gGrandmothers subtracted ten years from her age to marry an under-age boy, who added one year to his age. Thinking along these lines I have found an Ann Smith, age 13 in 1851, born in Kensington, with parents, Richard, 48, Lab gen, born in Huntingdon, and Elizabeth, 46, born in Alton, Hants. There is also a younger girl, Mary, 11, also born in Kensington. This family are living at 6 William Place, Kensington. (HO 107 1468 407 p53).
There is an even older Ann Sarah Smith, 15, born in Westminster, and living there with parents, Richard and Elizabeth. Richard is a servant, age 50, born in Westminster. (HO 107 1480 414 p10).
These are the only two of 87 Ann* Smith, with father Richard, born between 1835 and 1845, that I can find. There are two others born in Middlesex and one or two in Surrey.
All the best

Gobbo and Valda,
Sorry I didn't come back to you straightaway - I have been frantically searching for the copy marriage certificate (terrible filing on my part). I have now given up and am going to send off to the GRO for a new one this evening. Please don't abandon me and I will come back when it is received. Best wishes, Rosie.

Hi Gobbo, Valda and Louisa,
I have now received a new certificate and it does seem that Annie's father was probably the Richard who was a servant. The certificate reads as follows:-
Annie SMITH age 22 spinster No 1 Norwood Place, Kensington, father Richard Smith, brewer's servant. Witnesses were: James Smith and Jane Wigg.

Hi Rose
So it looks like it is Ann Sarah Smith. In 1851 she was living with her family at 87 York Street, Westminster St Margaret (HO 107 1480 414 p10):
Richard Smith, Head, Marr, 50, Servant Gen, b. Middlesex, Westm
Elizabeth Do, Wife, Marr, 49, Laundress, b. Suffolk, Thurlow
Ann Sarah Do, Daur, U, 15, Scholar, b. Middlesex, Westm
Elizabeth Do, Daur, 12, Scholar, b. Do, Do
Ann Sarah was therefor born 1835-6.
George Noyce was probably honest about his age. Freebmd has him indexed as NOYC_ George, birth registered in Kensington, Apr-Jun 1845. The reference is very difficult to read in the original index, my guess is Kensington 3 ?27.
Freebmd has the death registration for Ann Noyce 36 in Jan-Mar 1885 Fulham 1a 181: I guess this is the Fulham death that Valda found.
All the best

Hi Gobbo,
Thank you and the others for the time in helping me sort this one out. You are right about George's birth reference. I wonder if George ever knew Annie's real age!! I doubt there is much to learn from the death certificate though.
Hi Louisa, Certainly looks like it.
