Title: Yew Tree Farm, Twigworth - Completed
Post by: khyber on Saturday 14 February 09 02:38 GMT (UK)
Does anyone know the exact location of Yew Tree Farm, Twigworth?
My father lived there in about 1912.
Would the old houses on the same side as St Matthews Church, but a bit further towards Tewkesbury, have belonged to the farm?

Thanks for any help.

Judi,

At http://www.old-maps.co.uk/indexmappage2.aspx  you can find an old map ot Twigworth and the farm is very near the centre of the village.

Thanks, Chas.
I can't find the farm in Twigworth but there is one further up on the outskirts of Norton.
There are references in the Gloucestershire Archives Online Catalogue  to Yew Tree Farm Twigworth so perhaps its on the border of Norton/Twigworth.

There is a black and white cottage in Twigworth village named Yew Tree Cottage, driving from Gloucester to Tewkesbury it's on the right hand side before after the church.  If my memory serves me correct near to this is a "new" farmhouse, I say new but it was there in the 1960's.  Just trying to picture the area in my mind, a while since I've travelled that route!

Have looked at 1831 and 1919 map but Yew Tree Farm is not marked.

Have a look at http://www.rootschat.com/links/05kk/

Yew Tree Cottage is the one with the evergreens nearly hiding it (Yew trees?), with the blue trailers parked in the garden   There are more houses than I remembered, if you pan east there's what looks like a farmhouse, and the next house along, at an angle, is the "new" farmhouse I remembered.

Hi
There is a Yew Tree Farm in Bishops Norton about 2km due north from the junction of the Wallsworth road from Twigworth.
Map ref is   - SO848243
See http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/oswebsite/getamap/ Pink Button and search by name or GR copy and paste.

It is also shown on  http://www.old-maps.co.uk
if searching under Bishop's Norton, don't forget the apostrophe.

There is no civil parish boundary shown between Twigworth and Bishop's Norton

If you let us have a name it might be possible to find a potential reference in the 1911 census index

I asked someone who lives in the area if they had heard of Yew Tree Farm, Twigworth, this is the place they know as that name

Thanks so much, everyone.
I think with all your help I have identified the farm - looks like on the edge of Twigworth and Down Hatherley which makes more sense than the farm at Norton I found.
My family is Stanton who were in Leigh, Norton and by 1901 were living Tewkesbury Road, Down Hatherley and I did find them in the 1911 census index. They apparently moved to Twigworth between 1905 and 1908 before emigrating to NZ in 1913.
Thanks again
Judi

How nice of you to contact me, Sammy!
Do you know anything of the history of the farm e.g. was there more than one house there?
Dad always said he lived at Yew Tree Farm but I see from the 1911 census that their address was Yew Tree Cottage.  Is that the one you live in or is it further down the road from the farm?
Dad's father was a labourer so I don't imagine the family lived in the main farmhouse!
Thanks.
Judi

We live at the farm although I don't know much about it and we only have 6 acres here. Next door is yew tree cottage. I rent it and from when my landlords bought it, it now looks completely different! There is also yew tree nurseries which belongs to the farm but is now a separate business. I would have thought by looking at where we are it would have been all one so the cottage would have been part of it at one time. Yew tree cottage in itself is a nice house not sure if it's ever been extended or anything. I will see if I can look into it. I'm guessing my landlords bought this in maybe the 60's 70's

Thanks, Sammy.
I have a photo I found on the internet a few years ago which I'll send to you by personal message.
It would be great if you could confirm that that is the same Yew Tree Cottage next to you.
