Title: VIPONDS
Post by: Ian in Canada on Friday 13 February 09 19:41 GMT (UK)
I have read (unknown source) that the VIPONDs in Cumberland in the 1600s and 1700s were descendants of the VERTIPONTs who reached England with the Norman conquests in about 1066.
Does anyone have confirmation of this ?

There is also a story that an Alston area VIPOND killed in World War 1 was the last male if that line of VIPONDs.  Can someone confirm this ?   I believe that his name is on the War Memorial in Alston.

Cheers,    Ian in Canada.

Hi Mary,  Thanks for your message.  Several VIPONDs have been mentioned on other topics .  Do you know how and / or if they relate to each other ?  Also whether your VIPOND is related to the Mary VIPOND who married Samuel WHITE in Garrigill in 1699 ?
Incidentally I love your 'name'   'Weemary'  ;)
Cheers, Ian

Hi Ian

I have just recently found out about the vipond connection. The best person to contact is a Michael Wardell I think it is. he has loads of info on the Vipnd family.  He doesn't have a lot on my line  sad to say

I will look for his web page and send you the link

DO you have access to ancestry -  there are a few  trees on there  who are researching the same line as you.

One member also has my line of Viponds on  his tree as well as yours.  So far   they have not replies to me emails.  I am unsure if there is a connection  as the 2 lines don't seem to take you to a common ancestor :(

Mary and Samuel had at least 1 son

Samuel White & Ann Holden

15 May 1731 married  Garrigill, Cumberland, , England

Hi Ian, I have an A3 paper showing Vertiponts to Vipond its well worn I was given it by an Aunt who`s mother was a Vipond. I don`t know put it together but it was long before computers. It starts with William De Veteripont his two sons Ivo & Robert and states that the Gargill Viponds at some point came from these families.

Hi Ian

I was always told that us Viponds came over with William the Conqueror by my father and the name was de vetriponte.

My Gr Uncle Harry James Vipond was killed in WW1 but he was not the last in that line as his brother John Joseph had 6 children. But JJ was the only one to have issue of that family.
They were:

John Joseph       b        1874
Thomas              b        1876
Octavious           b        1892
Harry James       b        1886
Frances              b
May                    b
Isaac                  b        1889

Harry James I believe was on the war memorial for both Blanchland and Alston.  He lived in both parishes because his parents farmed in both areas, being Dryburn at Garrigill and Cowbyres farm Blanchland.

I have quite a bit of family history for this line of Vipond's if you are interested and am researching others but enough time is never available.  Hope this is of help and let me know if you want any other information.

Regards Marion

16 Vipond's in the upper teesdale and Middleton in teesdale area at the time of the 1851 census so probably a lot of lead mining connections . Could be worth looking on the North  Pennine Ancesters website

The second cousin of my great x2 grandfather Joseph Bays - born in 1908 - married a Margaret Vipond in South Shields County Durham. Joseph's father - another Joseph was born in 1873 and married a Thomisina Clarkson in South Shields and dies at sea in 1915. Joseph's (the 1908 one) great grandfather was James Bays who was born in Littlehampton, Sussex but was living in south Shields in 1851. Kevin Hicklin

Ian, I'm not sure if I've asked this before but do you know anything of the Viponds who lived in Brantford, Ontario?  On the 1911 Census of Canada Thomas Vipond and his wife Mary Jane (nee Cousin) are shown as living in Dublin Street along with William Cousin and his family and a couple of lodgers.  I've got some of the details of them when they lived in England but have lost the track when they went to Canada.
